Backstory:
Though she had been living in Japan for many years, Makayla was born in Vietnam and had lived there for most of her childhood. Makayla lived in Hanoi with her parents until she was about 14 years old when her parents were divorced. Due to her mom’s problematic mental state (which was part of the reason for their divorce), Makayla’s father gained custody over her and the two moved to Japan where Makayla’s father was from. Makayla learned some Japanese from her father growing up.
When they moved to Karakura, Makayla struggled to communicate due to her limited knowledge, and though she improved, she struggled daily. When Makayla was around 16 years old, her father remarried and Makayla met her stepbrother Mikoto. Mikoto agreed to teach Makayla to speak Japanese more naturally, becoming her first and most trusted friend. The two only became closer after the loss of their parents, who were killed by gangs later on.
Present Day:
Since moving to Karakura, Makayla has made lots of new friends. Not long after moving, she joined the KHS Fashion club in hopes that she'd be able to make friends in the club. Here, she met Benoit Preciado, the leader of the club. Makayla found Benoit intimidating at first (and honestly, she still does to some extent), but she really enjoys being a part of the club and is grateful that he accepted her application.
Outside of school, Makayla spent a lot of time at the Shinsei Seinaru Monastery where she met a priest by the name of Koi Sang-eo Mulgogi. Makayla really liked spending time with Koi and would often chat with (and mess with) him. Over time, Makayla grew closer to Koi and was eventually adopted by the priest.
More recently, Makayla graduated high school and began her studies in college. She's been working hard towards her goal, hoping to one day become a lawyer just like her mom.
