Karakura Protest - The Aftermath

Boroski

Level 17
This piece of story will follow the interview made by Luke Herrington (@Im6) and Boris Borodin, one of the participants in the Karakura Protest. I had to modify a few things from the actual conversation to allow for better immersion. Hope you guys and gals enjoy!

July 21st 2018,
The streets of Karakura seemed calm for the moment in the bright dawn of the rising sun. The center of the city where Happy Pills and the 11/7 face each other is populated by the few citizens who either return to their homes or wished to rest wherever they could. It was a horrific night that changed the outlook on the city forever, and it is only a matter of time before another disaster strikes.

Boris arrived at the front of Happy Pills in a half-exhausted pace, with him Liliana (@Infinianite) tagging along. The man leaned against the door, perhaps to clear up his mind a bit. He'd seen a lot that night and if not for the lady next to him, he would not have been here right now. He was grateful to her for saving his life amidst the chaos within the station, and further grateful for keeping him company until now.

However, the upcoming morning announced another day for Karakura High, and despite the events that transpired just last night, Liliana had to attend there to arrange an assembly to commemorate the losses. Among the students shot, some students were in her own class.

"Hey.. I'll have to go to the high school now. I've got a busy day now, after all of this happened." Liliana said, a tad regretful to leave Boris in such a rush.

"It's no problem, I can take care of myself now." Boris replied, understanding the more important thing she has to attend to. "I owe you one for saving me back there.. Couldn't move on my own."

"Yeah, you really needed the help. Couldn't afford watching you stay in the corner like that. Say, do you want to show up later at the high school? Everyone is welcome there for today and I'd really appreciate your presence there."

"Da, I can do that. But I must attend to someone else before I can show up. I'll call you later when I am ready." Boris replied, agreeing to join Liliana at the upcoming assembly that commemorated the losses during that night.

"Okay, thank you. That means a lot. I-I must go now. Take care, Boris!" Liliana said, having noticed that she didn't have much time left. She had to show up there sooner or later and with that in mind, she paced away hurriedly.

Just after Liliana disappeared in the distance, Luke walked up to Boris in his black suit. He appeared to be concerned as to what the Russian had to talk about. He held a small notebook and a pencil, which suggested that he would have to note down certain things later on. "Boris?" Luke spoke firmly, trying to get his attention and announce his arrival.

"Oh. Luke. Good morning.." Boris replied, with a weaker tone, facing the college professor. "You've showed up, that's great."

"Yes, I have. You wanted to talk to me about something?"

"Yeah.. Let's go inside the pharmacy, mind you? I don't anyone else interfering in our talk."

"Sure thing, let's go."

Boris pulled out a set of keys from his pocket and used the key for the pharmacy, unlocking its doors. He opened the doors which allowed the two men to step inside. He'd close the doors afterwards, to give the impression that the pharmacy is still closed and locked. Finally, the two would walk up to the bench next to the prescription booth. Luke leaned against the shelves, facing the Russian, while Boris sat down, feeling much more comfortable.

"So- What is it?" Luke asked the man, intrigued by what he was about to begin discussing on.

"I gotta tell you what I saw there last night, and it's going to be a lot of shit." Boris said, making vague hints about the Karakura Protest.

"Where? The Riot?"

"Yes, the Riot. What else could I be talking about right now?"

"Oh, right- Go ahead mate, I'll be taking notes I guess." Luke said, opening the small notebook he was holding. His other hand that held the pencil lifted enough to allow for the pencil to be on the paper, ready to note anything the man had to say.

"Okay.. I heard from someone, I don't know who, that a lot of people were going to do a protest against the cops. A big one. They said that it was going to be peaceful, so I decided to tag along. I had to wear this blue armband on my left arm because they put us into teams. My leader had a red "F" on the back of their clothes, that is all I know about them."

"Mhm.." Luke nodded, taking notes on the notebook and listening further.

"Then I saw most of the people wearing the gas mask. I questioned myself why did they need gas masks at a peaceful protest, I did not understand. I decided to continue participating, maybe it was a "safety first" procedure made by the rioters." Boris paused, coughing several times. "Ngh.. Fuck.. Sorry, my lungs are still having a bit of the problem here."

"It's alright, continue if you can."

"Anyways, they all began shouting things like "Fuck the police" or "Stop police brutality". Any of the sorts. Things were going fairly peaceful, but then some сука in their right mind had to throw a Molotov ****tail. The fire started to form and it didn't seem to shrink any time soon. In fact, it grew bigger like the savagery of most rioters. Ever since that bottle had been thrown, it was no longer a peaceful protest, but a wild manifestation that showed pure hostility. That's when I noticed the officer outside. He was alone, trying to get the public to calm down. His other comrades were watching from the inside, even when the fire started to form and when the shutters were starting to go down. That's when they started to surround the poor lad and tried to get him into the pool of fiery madness. He had no choice, he held his shield up defending himself and tazed anyone daring to come too close to him. One of the rioter leaders saw that this had gotten out of control and tried to shout "Give him space!" and "Don't kill him, don't push him into the fire!", but it was too late. They were angry seeing the people being tazed. I was watching him struggle, slowly ending up being burned by the flames. He screamed in agony as he was consumed, and fell dead. To make it worse, all of his equipment was scavenged by some rioters, further demonstrating the hypocrisy they have earned."

"Jesus.." Luke shockingly mumbled as he continued to note down

"Who knows how many relatives will be forever scarred by his death? Talk about mistreatment of the citizens, they killed an officer without mercy! What if he had a family? What will his family be without a father? What does their hypocrisy fucking show? The officer was pretty much forced to use that taser, there was no other option! Since the Molotov was thrown, they broke their only promise of a peaceful protest! I couldn't save the man, even if I tried.. The others would have assaulted me for helping the officer."

Luke remains silent, shaking his head in disappointment at the actions of the rioters and notes down more information.

"Anyways, we then headed to the front of the station with the shutters holding out the rioters outdoors. They started knocking at it constantly, chanting their hate messages with more hostility. After a while, they broke the seal and stormed in swiftly. I didn't know what to do then. I could have ran away while I still had the chance and avoid what was going to happen to me next, but the curiosity killed the cat as they say. "

"I get you. What did you do next?" Luke asked.

"I walked inside the station among with the crowd. That's where the officers kind of lost it- they had to retaliate. They were pretty much cornered and had no other choice. Fueled by anger at the loss of their colleague, they started tazing as many people as they could. I was among the people who got tazed. I fell down on the floor and I was unable to move. I could only watch the other rioters suffering the same fate. After a while, the gas was released and I didn't have a mask.. I couldn't breathe there, it fucked up my lungs pretty badly and I felt disoriented. Before I passed out, I saw three figures, heavily armored with riot shields and aiming their tasers at me. I was helpless, unable to move or breathe easily."

Boris paused for a moment, recollecting himself. He continued. "Later on, I woke up inside a jail cell, I was able to see what it was like to be there for the first time. It was dark and it only had a couple of beds and a sink. I saw three more rioters in the same cell. Most of them were pretty weakened, but one of them was still fueled with anger, and tried to breach his way out of the cell. He, and other people, continued to riot even there, pretty much berating the police officers to the point where they would compare them to literal war criminals. I was able to watch it all in a corner, I was still quite numb and my lungs were still doing pretty unwell.."

Luke sighed, glancing towards the ground slightly. "So you want this to be told to the public basically? About how- the police are brutal and are not caring for their citizens?"

"Yes, I want this to be public and I want everyone to hear what I saw there. But I am not done yet."

"Continue." Luke said, now continuing to take notes on the notebook.

"After a while, I heard that the mayor of Karakura showed up at the station, interrogating some rioters. It only did worse, they grew more furious and at some point, the cell gates were hijacked and everyone was able to set free. I couldn't move on my own and a teacher working at Karakura High took notice of that. Her name was Liliana and she helped me out. She got me all the way to her apartment, where several other people had shown up. I can recall hearing actual gunshots, I believe the police have started using lethal weapons to enforce order.. that was the creme de la creme of the riot. I saw one person getting inside Liliana's apartment, he was struggling to move. He was shot in the leg and I saw him getting bandaged.. it hurt him a lot and he screamed in pain. Liliana told me that she had witnessed some of her own students die in cold blood and that she was held at gunpoint and almost shot by the commissioner himself. Truly shocking, isn't it? Children dying at the hands of police officers. And for what? A supposedly peaceful protest that turned into insanity? It was their own fault."

"I assume the police wasn't really thinking this straight, that's why most of it happened-"

"Nobody thought straight!" Boris exclaimed. "It was clear as day ever since the Molotov was thrown!"

"I blame the person who threw it then, completely. Had they not thrown the bottle, a lot of people would have been alive right now, including the officer."

"To make things worse, I have little medicinal stock left here at Happy Pills. How am I going to treat all of those people now? Not many people saw this disaster coming!"

Luke let out a sigh. "Alright well- I see where you're coming from.. They didn't deal with it in the best way."

"Police brutality, my ass! It was the rioters' fault for breaking their one and only promise! In fact, I dare to say that it was everyone's fault! Neither side have done any good." Boris paused for a second to calm down a bit, then he concluded his story. "That was all I had to say, thank you for your time."

"No problem, Boris. I'll speak to the Mayor, and hopefully he can get this out there so people can reflect on what happened today." Luke replied, closing his notebook.

"I doubt that the streets of Karakura will be any calmer at this point." Boris stated, worried about the outcomes of the protest.

"Let's be honest, Boris. When was Karakura ever calm?"

Boris approached Luke, whispering to him "It was never calm."

"Exactly- Now, take care, Boris. I'll meet your another time." Luke said, walking outside of the pharmacy as he had finished the interview.

"You take care as well, comrade."

Boris then pulled out his phone, it was 08:25 AM. He remembered that he had to show at the high school for the assembly..
