What position are you applying for (Maiden or Priest)?
Maiden
What is your motivation for applying?
I have a few reasons for applying as a maiden, first and foremost is for the lore. I think it would be fitting to see my character, Kagura, join the ranks of the maidens as she spends a lot of time at the shrine to the point that it’s like her second home and it fits well with her backstory. I also love everything about the shrine, and the faction with its in-depth lore. Another reason is friends! I enjoy roleplaying with them, joining with them will only give me more opportunity to roleplay and interact with them. Lastly, I really do think the Maiden’s role is something fun, as I have always been tempted to join them. I am a huge fan of Japanese culture and Shintoism is a significant part of Japanese culture.
What do you currently know about Shintoism? Are you willing to learn more about it?
Shintoism is a religion that originated in Japan that revolves around Kami.
Kami:
Kami is most commonly used to refer to gods, although I have been told that it's much more complex than that. Kami are present in all type of things.
Some of the Kamis I know of in srp:
Tamashi Tankyu: A demi kami that often took the appearance of a half fox-half human.
Chiharu Yamatsumi: Kami of the mountain that the shrine is built upon
Karihuema: The Kami that sacrificed herself into a tree sapling.
Offerings.
To perform offerings you first must bow down twice, clap your hands twice and bow down again. Then you place your offerings, typically yen, rice or sake, pray and then you repeat the first steps once again, bow twice, clap twice and bow one last time.
Roles:
The Shrine consists of five roles:
The Shrine lead - Kannushi/Mitsue
Leader of the Priests - Guji
Leader of the Maidens - Naishoten

Some of the tasks that are done by the shrine staff:
Tarot Readings.
Tarot readings are one of the things the shrine staff do, and the process goes something like this. First you try and get the guests to calm down, since the potential answers could make them emotionally worse and a tarot reading should only be done with a clear mind. You then ask them to pick between these three topics: Love, finances and career. Shortly after you cleanse the cards. Next, you ask them to roll 78 and 2 three times. 78 is for knowing which card they got and 2 for if it’s upright or reversed. You use the handbook to see what cards they’ve gotten, then you search the meaning of the cards and interpret their meanings how you see fit.
Serving tea to the guests.
Feeding the koi fish.
Cleaning the hotsprings.
The shrine staff periodically clean the hotsprings (onsen) to keep it clean and tidy.
Attending the shop in the shrine when needed.
Shrine staff also attend a small shop in the shrine that sells omamori, ofudas and other goods.
They also hand out Omikujis from this shop if it is requested.
(Speaking of Omikujis if the Omikuji you got is of misfortune you can tie them on the rope to get rid of your misfortune)
Ema Wall
Shrine staff would assist guests when they request to write an Ema to hang on the Ema wall.
Cleansing.
I believe it's usually hosted by a priest (atleast irl), but maidens can also perform it in srp. There are two kinds of cleansing rituals. The Harae and the Misogi. The Harae is more for like spaces and areas, while the Misogi is performed on a person. I'm not sure of the process, although I believe for Mitsogi it involves the person being submerged in water while having the haraigushi (if it's a Priest doing it) or gohei (Maiden) waved on top while reciting the prayer.

Festivals:
Kagura Festival
A festival that is held at the end of every year to celebrate new years. During this festival the maidens will perform the Kagura dance, which is performed with Kagura Suzu.
Summer lantern Festival
This is also something that happens annually in summer, where you can throw lanterns up to send their hopes and dreams. During the festival, the priest and maidens host a bunch of games, food stalls, fortune telling etc.
Ceremonies:
Weddings and Funerals.
Weddings are conducted by one priest and one maiden. It begins with the priest banging the gong, and proceeding to say a prayer. Next, the maiden rings her Kagura Suzu. Then the couple bows. After that, the maiden will bring three bowls of sake, first the groom takes a sip, then the bride. This process is repeated for all three bowls. Then the couple say their vows and give each other the ring. The maiden will then ask them to bow twice, clap twice and clap once again
For funerals, I believe the priest must approach the grave with a lit match in their right hand. A small prayer is said by the priest under their breath, and then the priest would ask the loved ones to present an offering. After that, the priest commences the Hitotsu-miysa-sa, which transfers their soul into a wooden tablet. Then the Eulogist will be asked to deliver the Eulogy and lastly, all the loved ones will say their goodbyes before the eulogist helps close the casket.
Tea Ceremony
The tea ceremony is conducted by a maiden. The ceremony begins with the maiden greeting the guests at the entrance of the shrine. Cleansing herself then leading the guests to the tea house. She would then ask them to remove their footwear and lead them to a seat. The maiden would then formally greet everyone, and explain the values of the tea etiquette. After that, the maiden can start making the tea. Incase it’s a formal occasion, there is an option to bring the brazier to the table, and make tea in front of the guests. Then a little tea is poured into a bowl and ask the guests to pass it along after they taste the tea. Once the guests nod and approve, the maiden can serve the tea to the guests. Finally, an announcement will be made by the maiden, telling the guests to enjoy their time. Once the event is done, the maiden will escort the guests out of the tea house.
Jichinsai
It is a shinto ritual for requesting permission from a local kami to use the land for construction

Now for some things you do/know before entering the shrine and in the shrine:
Before entering the Shrine you must cleanse yourself at the Temizuya. The cleansing process is called Temizu. You must first grab the ladle with your left hand and rinse your right hand, then swap the ladle to your right hand and rinse your left hand. Then you must pour water into your left hand and use it to rinse your mouth. You then will spit the water onto the rocks on the side. You then rinse your right hand once more before finally placing the ladle upright.
You must bow down to the Torii gates before entering the shrine to show respect. Mainly the first and last torii on the mountain, the big red torii gate at the entrance of the shrine, the one gray torii in front of the staircase that leads to the honden, the torii to the old shrine and the torii gate to the cave.
You don’t climb the roof of the shrine buildings or structure as it is disrespectful.
No fighting or combating in the shrine grounds, unless it’s in the dojo which only permits sparing.
Masks are a big no no in the shrine, unless it’s the kitsune masks.
No yelling in the shrine as it disturbs the peace in the shrine.

Backstory
Kagura Kamori, a girl who was born in Tokyo. Not long after two years, her sister was born, Sakura Kamori and two years later, Kiriko Kamori, the youngest was born. The three were inseparable even though there were occasional arguments and fights, they always did everything together. The Kamori family were happy, everything was normal, the girls went to school, the dad [REDACTED] was hard at work to keep his family happy, the mom [REDACTED] made sure everyone was loved. The two of them would do everything in their power to take care of their girls. Kagura, growing up as the eldest, had some part in helping her mom take care of her sisters, a peaceful family living their lives in the busy world of Tokyo.
But unfortunately, one day, disaster struck. The father was met with a terrible accident and the family was broken, for months the family was broken. The mom had to start working to provide for the three little princesses of hers. The accident was very odd because the other driver was never found and the father’s death remained a mystery. This wouldn’t be the last tragedy that hit the Kamoris, as a few months later the mother was found dead, yet another mysterious death where the killer was never caught. The death of her parents never sat well with Kagura and so she took matters into her own hands, getting involved with local thugs, helping them do favors until she gained their trust and made her way higher into the criminal world, where she would soon learn that her parents'death was no accident, it was done by a person who moved to a small town on the side land called Karakura. With that information she moved to Karakura with her sisters. Of course the excuse for moving was to change schools and get a better education. Eventually she tracked down the person and avenged her parents, but after she had revenge, she felt hollow, the burden of taking peoples lives weighed down on her heavily.
Until one day she wandered into the forest for a walk, where she came across the stairs to the shrine, she walked up to the shrine where she came across the cleansing area, she slowly washed herself and continued forward, where she was greeted by the Maidens and Priests, they showed her kindness, something that she lacked getting in the criminal world, this touch of kindness made Kagura change her ways, throwing away her weapons and cutting off her connections with the criminal world. She started recovering as her burden started becoming lighter. She started spending more time around her sisters to make up for the time she wasn't around them, adopting a few pets to take care of and even changed her style to something she was more comfortable with.
Come to the present day, Kagura has accepted her past and has been free from her burdens, living life peacefully, getting closer to her faith, spending time with her family and new friends she made along the way. She started gaining new hobbies, like playing sports from time to time, as well as learning some music. She cherishes every moment she has and is grateful for the life she has now. She was even recently adopted by Charlotte! Her mentor and now mother. She is grateful for everything she has done for her

.CHARACTER KNOWLEDGE / SITUATIONS
How does your character act around shrine grounds? How do they interact with guests and other staff?
Kagura would treat the shrine as her second home, treating it with respect as it's a holy ground and speaking in a soft tone to not disrupt anyone's peace in the area. She would make sure to regularly feed the fishes as she loves animals as well as do her duties with elegance, as she loves the shrine and will do everything to keep its surroundings spotless. If nothing happens throughout the day, or she just wants to relax for a bit. She would go sit down somewhere indulging in her hobbies, or training at the dojo.
When guests would arrive, she would walk up to them calmly, giving them a gentle smile before greeting them with by collapsing her arms together and bending her body down into an elegant bow, she then would lean back back up and gently ask them if there's anything she could assist with, such as serving tea or attending to the shop. She would do everything in her power to assist them, making sure to be kind and ensuring that they feel welcomed as the comfort of the guests are important and to show the shrine's hospitality.
When interacting with the other staff, she would be comfortable and warm, as she already trusts them to the fullest and knows most of them quite well, a close bond she wishes to cherish. Depending on who she’s interacting with, she would joke around, chat, or play some made-up game, she thought about in her head.
You see a guest jumping around the roofs of the building and overall disrespecting shrine grounds, how would your character handle it?
Upon seeing the guest jumping on the roof, Kagura would sigh as she slowly would walk over to them and ask them softly, unless they can’t hear her, then she would unfortunately have to yell them to get down from the roof, while gesturing them to come down with her hand, telling them that they cannot be doing that, as well as gently explain to them why they cannot be doing it as it disrespects the holy ground. She would be gentle the first time as she would assume that they don’t know that it’s disrespectful. If they refuse to listen still, she would ask them to once again get down, this time with a bit more serious tone or else they will be asked to leave the holy grounds. If this isn't their first time committing the act, she would blacklist them
Why does your character want to become a shrine maiden/priest? What do they wish to achieve?
Kagura mainly wants to join the rankings of the maiden because she admires them, as well as looks up to them. They have helped her recover from her past, providing her with comfort and care that she hasn't gotten to experience from others before. She wishes to take part in preserving her shinto culture, as well as educating those that are interested in learning shinto. She would also love to contribute in helping with the various festivities and ceremonies of her culture. She also sees the shrine as her second home, spending time there regularly and talking with the shrine staff. She wants to be closer with her faith as she has found peace following it, and wants to continue living with that lifestyle for the rest of her life. She hopes she can provide peace and comfort to others who are also suffering just as she did once, to spread the same kindness she got from the shrine staff to others. And of course, she wants to follow her adoptive mother Charlotte’s steps and work alongside her as a maiden.
.
What are the core values of your character?
Humility
Kagura often finds herself hitting a wall in certain situations, to which she goes to look at others that she thinks is a good role model to learn from. She knows she’s not perfect by any means, and when she makes a mistake that she recognizes, she won’t hesitate to apologize.
Open-minded
She is often open-minded, willing to try out new things and willing to consider new ways to things and change her opinion on stuff. She loves to hear people’s thoughts on things, getting different opinions and understanding their reasonings and their takes. It’s also a pretty good conversation to have when you get to know people's thoughts on things.
Curiosity.
This one pairs well with her open mindedness. Wanting to know what others think and what certain things are. She loves to learn and know new stuff. She also loves to explore, whether it be things, or places.
Gratitude.
She is grateful for what she has in her life, whether it be the people she love and care for, or the things in her possession. She isn’t one to go look over someone who is possibly blessed with more stuff than she is. She loves what she has, and cherish all the bonds in her life.
