What position are you applying for (Maiden or Priest)?
Maiden

What is your motivation for applying?
My interest in the Shrine faction has grown significantly within the last 6 months or so. I’ve always been looking for new forms of roleplay and variety to my SRP experience and I believe that this faction can provide that. Regardless of acceptance, I am still eager to learn and engage with the faction as a whole from a creative perspective.

What do you currently know about Shintoism? Are you willing to learn more about it?
I can’t lie to you, my hesitation in applying for the faction stems from my lack of knowledge about Shintoism. But simultaneously, it is my leading motivation. I am always eager to learn new things, asking those I may know for mini lessons as well as doing my own research when I find time. I know of Omamoris, Omikujis, card readings and some of the regular maiden duties that I’ve experienced as a player interacting with the faction. I know vaguely of the Kami but not enough for me to confidently present that knowledge to someone else. I hope to reach that point sometime in the future.

Backstory
“The Unfortunate Genius”
Taliah Yukishiro was born in a small town along the Zanzibar coast, where the air always smelled faintly of salt and smoke from market fires. Asha, her mother, raised her in a quaint home on the hillside. They lived simply but contently; with Asha making jewelry from driftwood and shells, and Taliah, even as a child, could take apart a radio and rebuild it with better reception.

Word of her intelligence spread quickly, people coming to see the girl who could fix broken watches or make a fan run on its last leg. Her mother called it a gift from their ancestors. Others claimed it unnatural.

Then, one day, two foreigners arrived.

They came during dry season, earth cracking beneath their heels to signify their dreadful approach. They spoke softly, words too smooth to sound honest, yet the promise they offered was much too hard to ignore. A future for Taliah, education and more money than Asha could ever dream of. All they wanted in return was her mind.

And so an exchange was made. And Taliah left town with the strangers in promise of a better mind and expanded knowledge of the world outside of her coastal town. On their journey to Karakura, they spent a significant amount of time on the Japanese mainland. There, whilst under the guise of “processing documents”, Taliah found herself wandering into a Shinto Monastery. Her younger self was drawn in by whimsical things such as the clapping of wooden prayer blocks or the faint ringing of bells. It was quiet against the mountainside, contrast to the wild storm she’d been pulled into. But as she stared up at carvings and depictions of gods she did not know, just as swiftly was she ripped away from the temporary peace.

Years passed, the woman who brought Yukishiro to Karakura kept her contained with promises of that peace she’d only gotten a taste of. “You’ll come to understand peace when your work shapes the world”

And Taliah believed them.

The deeper she dived into her work, the less she remembered her mother’s voice. The less she knew of her own voice. By the time she turned 18, the walls began to crack. A quiet rebellion rose, tired of the manipulation and mistreatment. Silence turned violent quickly and in time, there was nothing left of the organization that had brought her to Karakura. That had cultivated her mind, gave her purpose.

The uprising left her and many others hopeless, without purpose. And on that same night, she found herself wandering to the monastery like she had done all those years ago on the mainland. Taliah was drenched, trembling, and when the thunder rolled she found herself remembering the peace she’d felt as a child. A promise of stillness, perhaps purpose.

By the time she reached the top of the mountain, her legs were bleeding, clothes torn. The monastery loomed ahead like a sanctuary, unmoved by the chaos that had so quickly torn away her purpose.

Whatever remained of the small girl from the Zanzibar coast had washed away that night, her mind meant nothing if it couldn’t feel peace. So, she pressed on, looking for anyone to assist her in finding a place, warmth, and a purpose.

How does your character act around shrine grounds? How do they interact with guests and other staff?
Yukishiro had lots to say and much to learn, her eagerness prominent but never showing on the woman’s surface. To others, she was expectantly quiet and often seemed to be like her mind was elsewhere. Warm brown eyes would scan the shrine grounds, careful, articulate in their observations or absent entirely, focused on a solution to problems unknown. That didn’t make her any less friendly to guests, however, a soft voice greeting them as they approached the monastery and offering assistance.

To the other staff, Taliah moved slowly, as if she was taking in every second of experience with practiced care. In conversation, her voice was soft, often trailing off mid-sentence as if her mind had wandered somewhere else entirely. She never raised her tone too harshly, never argued, instead searching for small projects to keep her hands busy and mind clear. Whether that be tending to the garden or making tea. A gentle but intriguing addition to the monastery itself.

You see a guest jumping around the roofs of the building and overall disrespecting shrine grounds, how would your character handle it?
Yukishiro’s eyes seemed to follow the person’s movement, locked onto them as they jumped from roof to roof. “I’ll have to ask you to come down from there, it isn’t safe.” her eyes didn’t falter, stare burning into their presence.

Should they continue, “Less you’d like me to call the authorities and have you removed. I highly encourage you to walk away and come back with better etiquette. We’d love to welcome you here but I cannot tolerate the disrespect at this time.” Taliah’s features barely shifted, gaze hardening ever so slightly at the person in front of her as she lifted her hand to point in the direction of the Torii gate.

Why does your character want to become a shrine maiden/priest? What do they wish to achieve?
The woman hummed, adjusting the hairpin that collected her pale tresses. “Peace is the simple answer, but I’d be lying if that was all I yearned for.” Her hands clasped in front of her gently, features unchanging as they often stayed. “Belonging, perhaps? I’ve spent the majority of my life wandering with whatever has been set out for me. Seen as my mind as opposed to my soul. I wish to feel at home and learn more about the place, the beliefs that have brought me so much serenity.”
What are the core values of your character? (OPTIONAL - MORE INFO IN FAQ)
“I’ve experienced a fair amount of struggle in my young life so I hold a small amount of understanding with each person I come across, not preaching kindness but living it. I believe whole-heartedly in showing compassion to others regardless of their behavior and preserving your humility above all else. I don’t cling to praise, nor do I dwell on what I’ve lost.”
(TLDR: Compassion, Humility, Responsibility, Forgiveness)
