Personality: Riko is like a russian doll. Y'know the ones that have this big outside then you open it up and there's a smaller one inside? That's a perfect example of her personality. Not that she's full of herself, but that she masks her true self behind multiple walls for her own protection. She can come off as the type of girl that your mother always told you to never interact with or be like, and she might just be that. A brash attitude and a fiery temper to boot, a lack of respect for authority, and a vulgar mouth? The horror! Never invite her to a church. However, once one gets to know her better they can see that she is rather selfless almost to the point it might look like she'd die for someone that she cares deeply about. Born in Sapporo, Japan to a twenty-two year old, Andrea Marín, and her almost fourty year old Sugar Daddy, Shin'ya Chikafuji. It was a one-sided affair, not much love in it at all. Shin'ya needed an escape from his busy work life and an absent wife, while Andrea was low on cash and desperate for a way out of the slums. Both sides played each other and when Andrea became pregnant, Shin'ya dropped her completely. Now alone, left on the streets with a new born baby? Andrea knew she couldn't care for both of them. She placed the unnamed baby girl up for adoption and faded from her daughter's life in whole.
The newborn baby was soon adopted by a middle class family in Japan, whom named her Riko Esarosa Tachibana. Together, her whole name meant 'White Jasmine White Wolf Wild Orange' - not a bad combination! Riko was raised in the Tachibana family until she was five, where the family began to run into financial troubles. Her adoptive father was being investigated for cooking the books at his job, putting the whole family under a time of stress and soon he was fired. Unable to pay for their home, they were forced to sell it. This left the family out in the cold, not wanting Riko to suffer a hard childhood, the Tachibana family sent her to the orphanage with hopes of seeing her again someday.
Now back in the system, Riko ran into a long string of bad luck regarding forever homes. Being tossed around in between multiple families and the orphanage. Riko began to act out, throwing fits, stealing, hitting, and running away. When she turned twelve, Riko was adopted by the Agawa family and that is where she met Chiyoko. Another orphan girl that was adopted by the same family, the two surprisingly didn't get along well at first. Chiyoko was shy and meek, while Riko was loud and unruly. Riko would tease and bully Chiyoko, pulling her hair, stealing her books, and even broke her glasses once. The two despised each other, but as they grew and matured, their relationship became something akin to Sisterhood.
When Riko turned fifteen, she received a letter from her birth mother, Andrea. It explained how Andrea had finally managed to secure a home, a job, and was doing well! She had spent the last five years attempting to track down Riko and was hoping that she had been successful in this letter finding her daughter. Andrea asked in the letter if Riko would like to come live with her, asking her to call the number placed at the bottom of the letter to talk. Not wanting to hurt Chiyoko by telling her that she wanted to leave and risk getting her cover blown, she left a note for her younger sister explaining that she was going to live with her mother and asking her to tell the Agawa family that she would be fine.
Travelling from Kagoshima to Sapporo to meet with her mother by train, managing to manipulate one of the workers into feeling bad for the young girl. Playing the girl whose friends ditched her and she lost all her money by being mugged, the worker paid for her ticket and sent her off. The fifteen hour ride was filled with anxiety and excitement for Riko as she travelled from one end of the country to the other. Meeting her mother at the station and it was...awkward, neither knew what to say, so the taxi ride back home was filled with silence or an attempt at small talk.
Riko stayed with her mother until she turned eighteen, over those three years, Riko had become fluent in Spanish and drew a close relationship with her mother while keeping in contact with Chiyoko over the internet. Riko would've stayed in Sapporo for longer, but while there she was exposed to the life of gangs. Getting involved with a delinquent gang titled, Shoganai, that had a pension for being rebellious and committing crimes like underage drinking, smoking, vandalism, theft, and assault. It's where Riko learned to fight more effectively and lock pick. What started off as a simple average delinquent gang quickly turned more into...becoming involved with Yakuza. Slinging drugs, nightlife, street racing, and murder. One night during an average organized jump in blackout gear, she watched as a member of her gang brutally beat the life out of a rival gang with a bat until the victim's face with squished into the pavement and unrecognizable. When Riko came back home that night, she spilled to Andrea, who immediately worked to send her daughter off somewhere else before the heat started.
Thus Riko landed herself in Karakura, living in a temporary apartment with three roommates in her adoptive sister's room while she was away at band camp.
