Backstory:
❋❋
◤━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━✦━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━◢
The aroma of sautéed mushrooms filled the small home in Brixton instantly as two tiny children by the names of Chisholm (8) and Aleesha Pims (4) raced down the stairs. Every other Saturday afternoon when school was out and life felt high, Father Pim would make something delightful. May it be his legendary Shepherd’s pie to his rich sticky toffee pudding; it always seemed to melt in the children’s mouths. Mother Pim always applauded the expertise her husband showed through little pecks on the cheek as she would dash off to working in her little office job. Funny how the man cooked in this tale said Chisholm, but he felt more so inspired to start preparing food in his father’s tracks. Every other Saturday passed, the more Chisholm studied the arts of cooking. Along with taking Ali to the park, their family was an ostensibly fortunate one and Chisholm couldn’t ask for more. Though it was that one afternoon that changed everything. As the children devoured their slice of the meat pie, Father Pim announced that they were going to move to Kurakura. After a few days had passed and they have gathered their belongings, the family left and arrived in Kurakura. Things shifted for the graver. Father Pim appeared to get weaker and weaker each day and stayed in a hospital bed. Mother Pim had difficulty with the bills she received, following in days without food and clean water. Chisholm ultimately started cooking for the family with the scarce ingredients they had (And taking care of Ali) along with Ali helping out with the cleaning of the apartment they rented. Things felt like they were becoming better when Father Pim started going out to see the fireworks with a grin on his face one night. The next day, with the aid of Chisholm and Ali, Father Pim made his last Shepherd’s pie. It was the best Shepherd’s pie the family ever tasted. It was infused with all the hopes and dreams Father Pim had for the family, to follow their dreams. The ground beef was handled correctly, onions and carrots diced with care, potatoes spread evenly. The family sat together, ate, and laughed wholeheartedly as a family should. Subsequent of the event, Father Pim died due to cardiac arrest. He had been suffering from Congestive heart failure (Condition where the heart doesn’t pump blood efficiently). As they held their funeral with candles in hand and said their goodbyes, Chisholm made a personal promise to become a chef when he grows older. He’d hold his sister tightly with his shirt moist from all the tears and snot she produced. Hours have passed, and Ali finally had calm down. She slowly looked up from the comfort of her brother’s chest and smiled.
✦"I’m better now Hyena. I hope Father is too."
He’d reply,
✦
"I’m sure he’s happier."
It took time to get past it. It hit hard. Chisholm began to overindulge even, which made him overweight. Eventually, things started getting better. The family’s financial situation had been balanced out and back in shape once again. Things became greater for all of them too. Mother Pim got a better job that she enjoyed. Ali seemed to study even harder and get greater grades at school. Chisholm paid more attention to his eating habits and better with his cooking skills each day. He even started giving the homeless meals. And every Saturday they’d made sure to come together and eat. Just like they used to when Father Pim was around...
