BACKSTORY
Ito Saemonsaburō, who was born as Dong Li in Beijing, China, had not had it easy as a child. Her biological parents were poor farmers who, at the young age of 7, had made the tough decision to give her up for adoption. She was taken in by Ikuha Saemonsaburō, a successful Japanese businesswoman who was the chairman of one of Tokyo's biggest airports. The day she was introduced to the Saemonsaburōs, Ito's life changed dramatically. She was raised with strict rules and expectations, particularly under the guidance of her adoptive mother's leadership style. While Ikuha provided her with all the material wealth, she was emotionally unavailable as she was more concerned with doing business than with establishing a personal bond with her daughter.
Ito was raised in a school in which only girls attended from the age of 8, in which she focused on ballet and language classes and was fluent in speaking Japanese within a couple of years. Despite being good at these, she remained a social isolate who preferred to remain with her adopted mother during working hours rather than being with students. Her teenage years were spent under academic pressure and without intimate relationships, and her childhood was therefore marked by a deep sense of loneliness as well as perfectionistic tendency.
At 17, after much contemplation, Ito made up her mind to break the hold of her adoptive mother and relocate to Karakura, Japan, where she was to remain with her cousin. After much negotiation, her adoptive mother finally consented, and Ito departed from Tokyo. Residing in Karakura allowed her to break free from the shadow of her adoptive family and begin finding out who she was, and the world beyond the strictures imposed upon her.
