Introduction

This article will include information about the sport baseball, rules, positions, and more. This is not only for the college and high school team, it’s for everyone.

What is baseball?

Baseball is a bat-and-ball game played between 2 different opposing teams. Which they will take turns hitting the ball or being out in the field trying to catch it and stop the runners.

Object of the Game

Depending on what side your on, the main goal is to score more points than the opposing team. When the ball is being thrown at you, you want to hit the ball as far as you can so you can either get a home run or to get to a base plate at least.

Positions

Pitcher

When your on the field there are positions it’s not a free for all type. Let’s start with the base plate in the middle of the field. That’s where the pitcher will stand. The pitcher is where they throw the ball towards the batter making them trying to hit or miss it. The goal of the pitchers job is to try to make the batter miss the ball 3 times to get them out.

Baseplate men

Next up are the 3 other base plates around each corner of the field. Those bases are called 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. The team that’s on the field have 3 players on that team go on their assigned plate. It’s their job to stop the batter from getting to those bases. To prevent this, they must get the baseball after it’s been hit, and run to their plate before the batter gets there making them get out.

Shortstop

Between 2nd and 3rd base is a shortstop. Their a strong defenseman that can protect 2nd base on a stolen base. They also help the pitcher as defense if needed to.

Left Fielder

Next up is left fielder their job is the cover the left side of the outer field. They also have to manage to catch the ball if the batter attempts to get it out that far. The left fielder must be able to catch and throw the ball to second or third base before the batter makes it.

Center Fielder

Center fielder they cover the outer center field between second and first base their job is as similar as left fielder. If the ball comes out of the inner field and makes it to center they need to catch the ball and throw it to either first or second base depending on the situation.

Right Fielder

Right fielder, same job as the other outer fielders. They need to stop the batter from getting to a base and making it back to home plate.

Catcher

Their job is to simply catch the ball if the batter misses hitting it.

Rules

  • Each team has a maximum of 9 players
  • Every game has 9 innings which means both teams get to bat once. If the game is a tie after the 9 innings then another inning will go until a winner is found. If the team that is batting second and has more points than the other team then they don’t have to complete their batting inning.
  • Once a batting order is complete you are not allowed to change it. That means throughout the whole game. Substitutes are allowed but whatever player was substituted for they have to go in that same position.
  • If the batter manages to hit the ball after the pitcher throws it. They have to get to at least first base. They can run to as many bases they want but they have to tag the plate with one of the batters body parts to be safe from getting out.
  • A batter can get up to 3 strikes before going out. A strike is when the batter misses the ball when it’s thrown by the pitcher. The batter can leave the ball which is called the strike zone, then a strike will be given. If the batter doesn’t hit 4 balls without swinging their bat then they can move to 1st base.
  • When your on base as a batter you can move to the next base at any point.
  • Players can get out by, strike outs, force out which is when the batter doesn’t make it to the base before the defense player; fly outs this occurs when the batter hits the ball and it goes into the air and it’s caught without it bouncing. Lastly tag outs, this is when one of the defense players with the ball tags the batter with the ball while they’re running.
Equipment

The bats are usually made out of wood, aluminum or metal materials. The ball is white with red stitching used for hitting, throwing, and catching.

The fielder team use mits, which is basically a oversized glove to help catch and pick the ball up.

The catcher has extra padding in their glove, including leg guards, a body guard or pad and a helmet.

How to score

When playing baseball, the batter must hit the ball into the field area and manage to make it around all 4 bases without being tagged by the outer/inner fielders. A player can score another point if they get a home run. A home run is where the batter hits the ball out of the play field, usually landing in the crowd. Players can score multiple times if there is already players on a base. So each time a player makes it to a base they will get a point. By the time they make it to home plate will depend how many points they got.

Baseball is a major and popular sport in North America, Canada and Japan.

In Karakura if your not on a baseball team for one of the schools that’s fine. You can make your own team.

Practice makes perfect! You never know your team could be the next big thing in Karakura.
