Backstory:
For as long as he can remember, Ein has always had it rough. He was born to a couple of Japanese immigrants who lived in the cheapest apartments that would rent to them. He wasn’t planned, which is why his upbringing was harsh. He wasn’t beaten or smacked around or yelled at. He was ignored. He was fed, and clothed and sent to school, but there was no love, even though he longed for it.

Memories of his upbringing were vague. His mind decided to block out a lot of the days he spent in the US with his parents. Going to school, coming home. Hearing the crunchy sound of an AC unit that didn’t work right. The ticking of a clock on the wall in the kitchen. Hum of the refrigerator. Sounds that defined his childhood. All mostly forgotten.

When Ein was five, that’s when his world took a turn. His parents had another child. His younger sister Hanami. She, also not planned, was born in the summertime. Already there was tension between him and his parents because he was the one unwanted child…now they had another. Money was already tight. Meals were stretched to feed three, there would be no way they could stretch it tighter to feed four. A decision had to be made.

For his parents, it was an easy one. One they probably wished they could have thought of earlier. Ein and Hanami were to be shipped off to Grandparents that lived in Japan. Ein would have memories of being escorted through an Airport with his sister in his arms. It was arranged that a friend of their grandparents would fly to the US and pick them up and fly with them, since they needed adult accompaniment. This was confusing to a five-year-old Ein, since he was just being moved about by strangers.

His mothers’ parents were nice. They were accommodating, but there was a strain there as well. There was a tiny bit of a language barrier since Ein was being taught English in Elementary school, and only knew a bit of Japanese. And his grandparents didn’t know a lot of English.

Life in Japan wasn’t easy. He had to relearn everything he knew. Customs were different. The food was different. A five-year-old trying to eat with chopsticks was near impossible. Similar situations seemed to arise. It was obvious to Ein that he and Hanami were a burden that they didn’t need added to their already difficult lives. This is when Ein learned to adapt, and quickly.
By the age of ten, he took on a good portion of taking care of Hanami. He learned how to change diapers and feed and clothe her when she was a baby. He learned how to make up stories to comfort her at night when she cried over parents she didn’t remember. He made sure she was escorted to and from school before going to his own classes. He studied hard and got good grades.

By Fifteen, reality hit the household harshly. His grandparents were on a severely fixed income, and something had to give. They couldn’t support two extra mouths. Ein decided that he would be the changing force and so, he left. He told his sister it was temporary, and that it’d just be easier if he went and lived in the dorm closer to school. That wasn’t exactly a lie, but he’d have to tutor and do odd jobs before and after class just to support himself in the cheap dorms. He would still come to the house and escort Hanami to school before his own classes.

He learned what hunger was. He learned desperation. Two things a teenager shouldn’t learn at all. There would be nights he went without a meal because he had to pay for rent on his room. He didn’t want to resort to pickpocketing, since he valued his freedom, but there were nights when his stomach ached so badly, that stealing money or food didn’t seem so bad.

He was also lonely. He’d prefer being ignored with people in his life, than alone in a dorm that was so quiet he could hear the building around him settle. Not many people lived there, the state of the buildings being close to dilapidated and so run down, that it could be shut down at any time.

Thoughts often went to his sister. Was she doing ok? Was she eating properly? She was also probably suffering since she didn’t have Ein there as support. She was living with two elderly adults that didn’t relate to her at all. He would visit when he could. But the older he got, and more demanding school and earning money became, he wasn’t able to see her as much as he wanted.

However, that all changed when he turned Eighteen. In his last year of High School before he took the entrance exam to move into the College side of the Karakura School, his sister Hanami was accepted into the Eighth Grade as a student.

The two lives he oh so desperately tried to keep separate; his former life with his grandparents and living with his sister, and his new school life, where he worked hard both academically and with odd jobs just to support himself, were about to collide.

Hanami knew nothing about his suffering. If she ever found out, she would try and fix or help the situation. Because that’s how she is. He should have been excited and happy to see her, but all he felt when he knew she enrolled was existential dread. But he also couldn’t just ignore her. She was his sister after all, and she was new here and probably nervous and scared about being in a new place.

He became a lot more hardened by this point. He would make sure nothing would happen to Hanami, but at a distance. He would keep an eye on her when he could. Karakura was a harsh place, but that didn’t mean that Hanami had to suffer like he did.
