Ezra has a psychological disorder known as Thanatophobia which is the extreme fear of death. He often has many panic attacks, and this disorder affects him in a way that he is more selfless for those he cares about more than anything.

Backstory:
Born Ezra 'Emilio' Garcia, Ezra was born in Miami, Florida as an only child. He was born into a loving and nurturing family, The Garcia Family who was always known for being a happy family, always having friends and neighbors over for cookouts and always taking vacations to different countries. They were very happy, until July 1st of 2013, the day of Ezra's 9th birthday. They celebrated with a very nice birthday party at their friend's house and as they were preparing to leave, Ezra left ahead, warming up the car while his parents spoke inside. Ezra continues to blame himself for what happened next. 9-year-old Ezra moved to the driver seat of the car, and after pulling the emergency brake off on a house with a very large incline, he panicked, accelerating full force into the house and ramming into all of the people left inside. Among those people were his parents as well as his childhood friends. He continues to have nightmares about this event.
After all of the chaos it was discovered that his mother, who was 8 months' pregnant at the time, was still alive and due to the injuries to her body, would have to have a premature birth and surgery. His mother did not survive the surgery, but out came what Ezra considers his last hope. And that was the child's name, Hope. A few weeks after the funeral, it was decided that Ezra would have to live in Japan with his Uncle Ian, in a city known as Karakura. Little did Ezra know that his uncle would harbor a grudge against Ezra for his brother's death, mistreating him and even making the decision to give Hope up for adoption, the only thing that Ezra had left. After a few years Ezra would have enough and decide to run away, living on the streets for quite some time until a kind bookkeeper took him in, teaching him how to fend for himself and to love literature. After the bookkeeper passed, right around the time Ezra turned 13, he resorted to joining different groups of delinquents and live off the street.
He continued on this for a while until he met whom he considered the first love of his life, Asa Mitsuzuki. He met her at a dark point in his life, and she was the light in that darkness. They were inseparable and whispers of marriage were in their horizon. Eventually Asa was pregnant, and they were overjoyed. But Ezra's decision to join gang had consequences, as all decisions do. Upon Ezra informing his gang he would be leaving, Asa was found dead with a stab wound through her stomach, not giving Ezra so much as a chance to say goodbye. Grief stricken and in pain Ezra decided to go find his last hope. He began frantically searching for the family she was adopted into until he finally found her. He eventually did find her but would keep their relationship a secret and would observe it. Ezra would take that time to heal and become the man that he is today. Of course, as many stories go, this was only a portion of his story. Maybe one day he can tell you the entirety of it all.
