What position are you applying for (Maiden or Priest)?
I'm applying for the priest role.
What is your motivation for applying?
I am applying for shrine because of the simple fact that I want to expand my roleplay experiences. I always enjoyed roleplaying on different characters, and just the thought of me possibly playing a priest excites me it also adds a new challenge for me. It is a very different type of character which will push me to think more creative about how I will interact with the environment and other players. I'm excited to bring new perspectives to roleplay and explore a position in the shrine that is meaningful.
What do you currently know about Shintoism? Are you willing to learn more about it?
I know a decent amount about Shintoism this is because I just got out of a shrine internship which lasted around a month, I did not know much about Shintoism before the internship. This is what I have learned so far:
Omikuji
An Omikuji is a prediction of the future, almost like a fortune cookie.
It's made from special paper and there is three types Good which is green, Mediocre which is yellow, and Bad which is red. You can hang the Omikuji on the wall to let the Kami know you have seen your future. This will release the burden of the Omikuji.
Omamori
Am Omamori is a sacred charm that brings good luck to a person. There are lots of different omamori you can buy at the shrine. They're wood and paper wrapped in a designed silk.
There is five types of omamori at the shrine.
Omamori of Protection/Kami - protection from spirits
Omamori of Health - protection from health issues
Omamori of Love - Grants luck with love
Omamori of Studies - Grants luck with studies
Omamori of Good Fortune - Grants good fortune
Ofuda
A shinto honorable tag made in a sacred setting. Priests can make them, not maidens. Their effects only last a year.
It has four uses
Used to cleanse.
Used for protection. (will scare away spirits who look to cause harm)
Made on IseWashi paper (bleached paper)
Basically is a stronger omamori.
Types of spirits
Manifest
Aramitama - Rough soul
.Nigimitama - Harmony of soul.
Hidden
Sachimitama - A happy soul
Kushimitama - A mysterious or powerful soul.
Ema Wall
An Ema Wall is the wall that you hang the board that has your wish on it so the Kami can see it.
Temizuya
How to walk through Torii Gate's
Prayers
I am very willing to learn more about Shintoism.

Backstory
The Journey of Yang Matsukawaizumi: A Path Toward Priesthood
Early Life and Spiritual Upbringing
Yang was born in Kyoto, a city where the past and present coexist, with towering buildings standing alongside ancient temples and shrines. His family was not deeply religious, but they held immense respect for tradition, making sure that Yang grew up with a great understanding of Shinto customs. However it was his grandfather, a devoted priest who introduced him to the spiritual aspects of life. From a young age Yang was attracted to the peacefulness of the shrine his grandfather tended to. While other children ran through the street playing games and what not, he found comfort in sweeping the stone pathways, preparing offerings, and observing the rituals his grandfather carried out with much care. The cadenced clang of the shrine bell, the murmured prayers, and the cent of incense all became very familiar parts of his daily life. One summer day it was somewhere around afternoon time, when he was around ten years old, Yang sat criss cross apple sauced on the wooden engawa of the shrine, watching his grandfather carefully inscribe prayers onto wooden ema plaques. A woman approached, she had a worried expression on her face.
"Tanaka-sama, my son is sick again. The doctors say they can do nothing more… I don’t know what else to do." she said, her voice quivering with desperation as tears welled in her eyes.
His grandfather offered her a gentle smile. "The spirits hear you, as they always do. Let us offer a prayer together."
Yang watched as his grandfather guided the woman through a purification ritual, his voice was calm and steady. The woman ended up leaving with tears in her eyes but with a sense of peace as well. That moment left a lasting impression on Yang. He saw how faith even in it's most simple form can provide comfort for others who are in need. Despite Yang's growing love for the shrine life, Yang faced pressure from his parents to pursue a modern career. His father who was a businessman, often reminded Yang of the financial struggles that came with priesthood. while his mother who was a teacher, encouraged him to choose a job that would allow him to use his intellect. Yang had a deep respect for his parents, no matter how hard he tried to envision himself as an officer worker or a scholar, but none of it felt right.
A Growing Sense of Purpose
As Yang entered his teenage years, his responsibilities at the shrine increased. His grandfather now getting older, relied on him more often to help with his daily duties. Visitors from all walks of life came to the shrine, and Yang began interacting with them more. One evening, as Yang was closing the doors to the shrine, a man stumbled in he appeared to be in his late twenties stumbled onto the grounds, the man was clearly distressed, His suit was untidy, his tie undone, and he had bags under his eyes.
"I have no idea why I'm even here," The man muttered, running a hand through his hair. "I haven't been to or even seen a shrine since I was a kid . . . But I feel like I'm losing control of everything! My job . . . My life, everything is falling apart!"
Yang stood there unsure of what to say, simply nodded and gestured the man towards the purification fountain. "Wash your hands first," he said.
The man hesitated pausing for a second before following Yang's instructions, Yang handed him a small wooden plaque and a brush. "Write it down . . . Whatever is on your mind."
The man scoffed but took the brush. A few moments later, he sighed and handed the wooden plaque back to Yang. "I don't know if this will do anything, but," the man paused for a second, a little embarrassed. "Thanks kid."
Yang hung the plaque up next to the others, he watched as the man stood before the shrine, seemingly lost in thought. Moments like these confirmed Yang's belief that spirituality still had a place in this modern world.
However, the growing demands of his father and mother's expectations weighed on him. His father was pushing him towards business school, while his mother suggested university programs in education. The pressure mounted, making Yang question if his dream was even realistic.
A Turning Point
Everything changed when Yang's grandfather fell gravely ill. The once strong man who had been the heart of shrine and Yang's role model was now bedridden, his voice much weaker but still carrying wisdom. One night Yang sat beside his grandfather, the room was dimly lit by a singular lantern.
"You have been troubled lately," his grandfather said softly, he didn't say it as if it was a question but as if he already knew.
Yang paused for a second hesitating. "I want to follow in your footsteps, I want to become a priest! But . . . I don't know if I can."
His grandfather chuckled his voice raspy. "Did you think this path was going to be easy? It's not about what others are expecting of you. It's about what you are willing to dedicating your self to."
"But how do I know this is the right choice?" asked Yang with a worried expression on his face.
His grandfather reached out, squeezing Yang's hand. "When you stand before the torii gate . . . when you listen to the wind in the trees . . . do you feel at home?"
Yang closed his eyes already knowing the answer.
"Yes."
His grandfather gave a small nod before coughing for a little. "Then you already have your answer."
His grandfather passed a way a few weeks later, and with that a chapter of Yang's life has closed, and a new chapter of Yang's life has now opened. But his grandfathers word stayed with Yang, guiding him towards a decision he had been long afraid to make.
Moving to Karakura
Determined to exit his comfort zone, Yang decided to leave Kyoto and move to Karakura. He heard of the Karakura shrine and hoped that he could continue his studies and training there. Adjusting to Karakura was not easy, the city was faster, louder, and far more modern than the peaceful surroundings he had known. His first week was spent wondering through the streets, feeling like an outsider.
One evening he found himself sitting alone at a small ramen shop, his thoughts heavy. The shop owner who was an older woman, placed a steaming hot bowl in front of him.
You look like someone who’s lost," she remarked.
Yang gave a small chuckle. "Something like that."
Looking Ahead
Yang's path is far from over. He has yet to step into the priest role, yet every step he takes reaffirms his decision. He is not preserving tradition for the sake of the past, he is learning how spirituality can still play roles in peoples life, even in a world that is changing constantly. Through his interactions , in life, Yang has learned that the shrine isn't just a place for people to worship. It's a place of connection, it's place where the past also meets the present, a place were people can find guidance and peace.
And now, as Yang walks through the shrine, sweeping the pathways just as he like he did when he was a young child, he knows and feels as if he has found his purpose. Not in wealth nor power, but in service to the spirts, to the people, and to the traditions that have shaped him into the man he is becoming.
CHARACTER KNOWLEDGE / SITUATIONS
How does your character act around shrine grounds? How do they interact with guests and other staff?
In the shrine grounds he finds solitude comforting rather than lonely. Yang believes that the shrine is more than just a place of work, it's his home and what he was meant for. Yang believes he should perform everything with devotion, whether he is sweeping, cleaning, or tending to the torii gates, Yang thinks of tasks as a form of meditation. In Yang's mind keeping the shrine in peak condition is a just as important as performing rituals, it is a way of honoring the spirits. With fellow shrine staff Yang is kind yet reserved. Yang offered blessing with graceful movements. he speaks softly but with authority as well. With outsiders who are curious Yang takes the role of a patient guide, Yang explained the history of the shrine and the importance of its rituals in a way that the guests will understand. Yang's explanations came with an air of mystique, leaving people wondering if there was more to the shrine, drawing them in. Yang has little to no tolerance for those who acted rudely or mock the traditions of the shrine. He never raises his voice or becomes aggressive towards disrespectful guests, but there is a weight to his presence which makes people uneasy. Yang's normally soft eyes become much more piercing, his words take on a sharp warning tone, it's almost as if he knows something that they disrespectful guest doesn't, not to many guests disrespect the shrine twice after meeting his icy stare. To worshippers, he is a serene guide, someone whose presence brings a sense of peace and quiet wisdom, To outsiders, he is an enigma, a man whose words carry a depth that lingers in the mind long after the conversation ends, and to the spirits To the spirits, he is a keeper of balance, someone who neither fears nor controls them but respects their existence and ensures they do not disrupt the harmony of the shrine.
You see a guest jumping around the roofs of the building and overall disrespecting shrine grounds, how would your character handle it?
If Yang saw a guest jumping around on the roofs of buildings and disrespecting the shrine grounds Yang's first response would be disappointment. Yang values the shrine as a place of harmony and spiritual respect, so seeing such disrespect would not sit well with him. Instead of immediately yelling or resorting to force, Yang would handle the situation with a combination of firm authority and a eerie sense of control. Before Yang says a word , he would stand on the ground below, watching the individual with a sharp, piercing gaze. Yang's expression wasn't angry nor was it amused, it was more like deeply unwelcoming. There would be a weight in the air, an unspoken warning that something is watching. Yang would not shout or act frantically. Instead, he would call out in a level of authoritative tone, cutting the air without needing to be loud. "You're being a disturbance to the shrines balance. Please return to the ground immediately." If the guest still refused to follow Yang's orders he would escort them out, though Yang wasn't a fighter, his aura alone would make it clear they had no place here. If they resisted, Yang would call for shrine assistants to help in removing them. If they tried arguing with Yang, he would simply not entertain the conversation responding coldly. "You have no respect for this place. Leave."
Why does your character want to become a shrine maiden/priest? What do they wish to achieve?
Yang Matsukawaizumi did not choose to be a priest, it was his role that has been waiting for him all along. When Yang was younger he had a very deep connection with the unseen, sensing things that other didn't. Yang was raised in a family with deep roots to the spiritual world even though his mother and father pursued modern careers, he spent much of his time wandering the shrine grounds, drawn to the quiet hum of ancient energies that lingered in the air. While other children played without a care in the world, Yang always felt like there was so much more then what then the human eye can see. It wasn't just curiosity that led him on this journey it was responsibility. He saw how the balance between the living and the spirits could be disturbed by foolishness, recklessness, or even malice. His decision to become a priest was not just about honoring the tradition, but becoming someone that was like a bridge between worlds, making sure humans and spirits could exist together.
