Backstory:

To understand the depth of Hyuk-Jun's character, one must acquaint themselves with his parents, Camilla Morales and Hwan-Jun Morales. Born in the vibrant heart of Puerto Rico, Camilla underwent a transformative journey. While navigating the streets of San Juan, a pivotal moment of self-realization prompted her to enroll in ethics courses at a local community college. Despite financial constraints, she diligently saved for a life-changing trip to Seoul, South Korea. It was in this cosmopolitan city that Camilla serendipitously encountered Hwan-Jun Dong, marking the inception of a profound connection that transcended cultural boundaries and laid the foundation for Hyuk-Jun's diverse heritage.

Shifting focus to Hwan-Jun Morales, he grappled with parental expectations, struggling to meet the standards set by his remarkable parents. Despite their persistent encouragement, Hwan fell behind, eventually dropping out of college and succumbing to a life of addiction and sporadic employment. A chance encounter with a charming Korean woman sparked a turning point, compelling Hwan to enroll in an ethics class and embark on a journey of personal growth. This decision not only led to his own transformation but also brought him into the transformative orbit of Camilla.

Hyuk's journey unfolds in Seoul, South Korea, where he shares a small apartment with his parents, Camilla and Hwan. Hwan, with a decent job, and Camilla, babysitting for extra income, create a modest but content life. The unexpected twist occurs when Hwan, after an impromptu lottery ticket purchase, wins a staggering 200.7 million won. Ecstatic, he evenly distributes the windfall within the family. However, this windfall becomes the harbinger of tragedy. Hwan succumbs to vices, leaving the family for a few years, when Hyuk is just 14. Camilla, resilient, raises Hyuk in relative affluence until the money dwindles due to Hwan's financial mismanagement. As Hyuk turns 18, his college journey begins in Karakura, Japan, funded by the remnants of his father's winnings. Camilla, having invested in his education, accompanies him to start anew. The poignant departure from Korea marks the beginning of Hyuk's pursuit of dreams, leaving behind a complicated past and embracing the promise of a brighter future in Japan. Still at 18, Hyuk's dreams are materializing in Japan, but a devastating blow strikes when his mother is diagnosed with multiple cancerous tumors. Hyuk, faced with the heart-wrenching loss, buries his mother and takes life at a slower pace. Engaging in the popular sport of basketball, making friends, and connecting with large families, he finds solace in his 19th birthday, celebrating not just another year but also the impending graduation that signifies a significant achievement in his resilient journey.

After years apart, fate reunites Hyuk-Jun and his father on the bustling streets of Karakura, where he finds his dad lost in the grip of alcoholism. Despite their shared struggle with addiction, Hyuk-Jun extends a helping hand, guiding his father towards a path of modest improvement. Though the specter of alcoholism still looms, their bond strengthens as they navigate the complexities of their relationship, finding solace and companionship in each other's company, forging a fragile yet meaningful connection amidst the chaos of their lives.
