♥ Kaori Hoshizora . . . how does one even begin to describe such a complex personality?
She can be sweet, she can be a bitch. She’s the sweetest bitch anyone could meet. A loyal friend who always has her girls' backs. Her boys too. Even though she’s not the strongest fighter, she is ready to throw down for anyone she cares about. Though, no matter how much she loves someone, it’s hard for her to be vulnerable and put her full trust in them. If trust issues were a hot girl, it would be her. Despite her sassy, perceived two-dimensional exterior, Kaori is a very deep and loving person with a dark past. She has a huge heart and when she loves, she loves hard. Her exes would detest that, maybe even doubt the fact she ever loved them because once they screw her over, she makes it a point to pretend they never existed to her. To her it’s better that way, she mastered the art of detachment to protect herself from heartbreak. Maybe it’s just an act of self-sabotage but for her, it seems to work. Since her sister died, she always took it with a grain of salt whenever someone promised to always be by her side. She loves hard, yes, but a part of her will always be prepared for the day they leave. Most of the time, leaving before they can. And god forbid a man does her wrong because she’ll make sure he hurts more than she does. She’ll never show it though, she will never give a man the satisfaction of knowing they hurt her even if that means being called a cold-hearted slut for moving on too quickly. She has an image to maintain and that’s being Kaori Hoshizora, the fun-loving, sassy, bad bitch who is always adorned in pink, and she will never be caught crying over a man no matter how much it hurts. Will anyone ever truly understand the complex girl that Kaori is . . . ? Maybe not and maybe she wants to keep it that way.

B A C K S T O R Y

Kaori was born in Tokyo, Japan to Chiya and Koji Hoshizora, a successful and wealthy couple. From the start, she lived a privileged life, shielded from the financial struggles many people faced. However, contrary to their seemingly happy family, they were far from it. Chiya and Koji's marriage had many problems, with Koji's infidelity and abuse leading to its downfall. Chiya, wanting to maintain the family's image, stayed in the marriage, but it never got better.

Kaori and her older sister Emiko’s relationship with their mother wasn’t great. Chiya would often take her frustrations out on them. Emiko faced more of it, becoming the target of Chiya's angry outbursts. Chiya was emotionally distant, and when the sisters tried to speak up about their father's abuse, they were shut down or even slapped by their mother and told to stay in a child's place.

Their relationship with their father wasn’t any better, seeing as he was always away for business or working “long hours.” The times they did get to spend with him were nothing short of meaningless conversation and him telling his daughters they needed to do more with their lives. Even as a child, Kaori’s parents held high expectations, putting her in dance and music classes and hiring the best tutors in the city.

Growing up, Kaori and Emiko leaned on each other during tough times. When their parents fought, Emiko would distract Kaori, making her laugh or singing to her. Kaori felt safe only with Emiko around. She admired her sister's ability to bring joy despite the family's hardships, wishing to be just like her when she grew older. Emiko was Kaori's source of safety and inspiration in their tumultuous world.

That safety and inspiration would soon turn into betrayal and resentment the day that Emiko decided to take her own life, leaving 12-year-old Kaori behind to pick up the pieces of their broken home by herself. For years, Kaori despised Emiko for breaking her promise that she’d always stay by her younger sister - but more than anything, she was heartbroken and confused. Lost in a world without her older sister to hold her when she cried at night or to protect her from her mother’s angry outbursts, Kaori couldn’t fathom the pain and emptiness her heart would feel every day. So many questions as to why her big sister would leave her this way. Was her sister going through something she didn’t talk about? Was Kaori not enough for her to stay strong? This heartbreak would manifest into abandonment and trust issues and a fear of vulnerability.

After her sister’s death, Kaori was left with a void that she would try to fill by partying and drinking with her best friends Harumi and Nozomi. This would in turn strain her relationship with her parents even more, with her and her father becoming estranged and her constantly fighting with her mother. Kaori was constantly called a disappointment, slapped, or locked out of the house for days when she would stay out partying with her friends. It got so bad that she convinced her dad to let her live on her own, making the promise to do good in school and get into college if she could do it on her own without dealing with her mother’s abuse. He agreed and she moved to Karakura with her best friends Nozomi and Harumi.

Trying to process her sister’s death without any emotional support from her parents and in a new town left her feeling more alone than ever. Even though she had her two best friends, she would keep it to herself, never letting it show that she was still grieving. To deal with the pain, Kaori would turn back to her roots, using music as another way to escape. She would pour her emotions into every key she’d play on the piano, composing beautiful, heartwrenching songs that truly showcased how hurt she was on the inside. She’d never play in front of anyone though, not even her closest friends.

Scared to open up her heart to anyone ever again, Kaori moves through the world with her walls up high. Some will try to climb them, but they’ll give up halfway. Some won’t even try at all, and Kaori is happiest with that. Or at least that’s what she tells herself. Sometimes she wonders if there’s someone out there who wouldn’t fail to break through, would they love her the same, would they stay? Maybe someday but for now she continues to live her hot girl life, working hard to keep up with the facade of being unbothered, partying all night with her friends, and breaking hearts all the while keeping her promise to her father. Will it all catch up to her in the end, though?
