KENZO OKINA
The Displaced Delinquent

Basic Information
Backstory
Held under the watchful gaze of his solemn Father, Okina was steadfast in gathering his support and respect; dedicating the majority of his life to studying and being the ‘perfect son’. Medals flowed, awards were granted, and he often found himself the centre of attention from his peers. Alas, it didn’t feel right. He didn’t enjoy it, nor did he love his life. Like with all things, Okina did what was expected – fulfilling what was required, rather than what was wanted. It didn’t bode well with him, and many days after classes, his mind was darkened and mood sour, lamenting the solemn solitude that he had willingly accepted.

It was only fate that he’d come to rebel, to clash against the ideals and the wishes that were sought after for him, though it wasn’t so quick, for years of conditioning made it hard to break out of the shell. Yet, the catalyst of this was a simple mentor. A delinquent named ‘Ken’, one who bore a devious smile.

At times, he seemed like a friend, other times more-so of a teasing bully. Nonetheless, Ken was one of Okina’s closest acquaintances, and the delinquent often dragged the studious boy around, teaching him many things. Though the most important out of them all was personal enjoyment, the pursuit of fun. He liked the thought of that, and savoured every moment, be it troublesome or even dangerous. This came at the detriment of his school life, for many days Okina skipped school, instead focusing on himself. The boy’s grades suffered, but his exam scores didn’t because his studious nature was too ingrained. It was difficult to shake off. What was harsher, however, was the look in his father’s eyes. And what came after was the long look into the mirror.

His once short ebony hair was faded, dyed blonde as the hues clashed against the black roots. The large eyes, filled with wonder, were changed – now sharper, wiser, yet so dead. A tattoo clung onto his neck as if it were a hand, choking him permanently, and earrings danced downward, clinking against another to remind him how much he had changed.

At that point, Okina chose to double down.

The uniform that once fit him was tossed aside, and he found comfortable apparel to don instead. No longer did people look up to him, and no more did they come to praise him, rather segregate and abhor what the boy became. He was the ‘model student’, the one that the teachers put on a pedestal, and his mannerisms all but tarnished the school’s reputation. Alas, he didn’t care. He was happy, jocund with who he was.
“You’re a good lad, ‘Oki’, Just.. you’re aimless; directionless, bored. I don’t think you know where you’re even going at the end of this, or even what you want to do. Don’t lose sight of who you are, 'cause I won't either.”
- Ken

It was so, that with a few incidents, one that sparked a fight was reprimanded harshly. His honour was tossed aside, as did the little respect that he held at this point. His family was always struggling, and due to this, they held the brunt of the punishment.

He was tossed aside, expelled, and his Father sought to find a replacement school for him. They applied to many, but like the others, they rejected him. Only at a particular place, far away from where he lived, did hope linger. With a heavy heart, and a promise made, he set out to make his Father proud once more.
