NOTE: This is MOSTLY a suggestion, everybody can use their own colour theming if they roleplay, there is nothing wrong with using a completely different style.
First, what colours are there?
Here's a list of legacy colour codes and roughly what they look like:
(They will likely look slightly different than in chat)
#AA0000 Dark Red - &4
#FF5555 Red - &c
#FFAA00 Gold - &6
#FFFF55 Yellow - &e
#00AA00 Dark Green - &2
#55FF55 Green - &a
#55FFFF Aqua - &b
#00AAAA Dark Aqua - &3
#0000AA Dark Blue - &1
#5555FF Blue - &9
#FF55FF Light Purple - &d
#AA00AA Dark Purple - &5
#FFFFFF White - &f
#AAAAAA Gray - &7
#555555 Dark Gray - &8
#000000 Black - &0
If you want to actually preview the colour codes, you can view the list here
There are also formatting codes:
bold - &l
italic - &o
strikethrough - &n
underlined - &m
magic (Scrambles text) - &k
reset (Removes all colour & formatting) - &r
Great! I'll use those!
Not so fast. I suggest using hex(adecimal) colour codes, which was added in 1.16.5 (A while ago...)
You can pick hex colours here (or by using any colour wheel / picker.)
If you want to get a colour from an image, you can use this tool to do so!
I'd generally recommend using hex over legacy codes.
In fact, SchoolRP can do this for you automatically if you use /emotecolor.
How should I set up my actions though?
You should have 3 colours when you roleplay.
The ACTION colour, or what you set your /emotecolor to.
You should set your action colour to whatever you want, I suggest a colour that isn't too dark (Because of shadows,)
and a colour that isn't very bright AND saturated.
I would also recommend that (if you are using a different DIALOGUE and EFFECT colours), your action colour contrasts well
with the two others.
For example, this colour would be better than this colour because of vanilla text shadows being enabled by default.
I suggest leaving this unformatted.
The DIALOGUE colour, or what you use when speaking.
I am pretty sure that this is useless now, because of how ""s change text to white, but if you type dialogue like THIS:
`...` or '...', then you should pick a colour that contrasts well with your /emotecolor. I'd recommend sticking to the &f or &7 legacy codes.
This CAN be italicized, but I also suggest leaving this unformatted.
The EFFECT colour, or mumbles, whispers, and sound effects
You want this to be a little darker than your dialogue colour. I'd suggest using italics (The italic formatting code
that I mentioned earlier,) and a gray colour. Preferably just &7 (Or a custom one if you chose &7 for your dialogue)
I suggest italicizing this.
Emphasizing something:
You should EITHER:
- CAPITALIZE the text
- bold the text
- or darken the colour of the text.
The third one being my preferred method.
I didn't buy a rank :(
Well, you can still use the yellow action colour provided to you by default!
Reminder:
Don't bold anything except for dialogue when you are yelling, or points you REALLY want to emphasize,
and even then you can get your point across by capitalizing.
Use italics when producing sound effects, like 'tch' (scoffing, grunting, groaning, etc)
Pick subtle colours PLEASE, don't flashbang the chat whenever you detailRP.
If you are talking and use asterisks (* symbols,) then it will start an action (Which will be yellow by default, or your
emote colour). You can finish the action with another *
If you are actioning and use quotation marks, you will start / end a message inside the action, which will be white
