Trivia

What subject are you applying to teach?:

History

What is your motivation for becoming a teacher?:
I have always had an interest in learning history and I think it would be good to share my passion with those who have the same interest. It’s also a very broad subject, there’s ‘Ancient’ and ‘Modern’ History subjects taught in the High Schools of my country, Australia. But there’s also another subject which is of particular interest to me, and that is ‘History Extension’ which is an additional subject students can elect to do where they effectively study the discipline of history, so historiography, learning about primary and secondary sources, issues of authorship, citation, and just academic skills in general which really does prepare folks for university moreso than other subjects in my opinion.

Anyway, I say all this because I think teaching history here, including fictitious history (about Karakura and so on) would also be a good exercise to improve my roleplay skills since I have never had a role like this before. Other than that, for more practical reasons, during my Timezone, the server is mostly inactive. It is too often said that there are too many Professors and not enough teachers and I want to fix this. It would be good to have a teacher that can host some classes to make the server more active and give the players something to do in a timezone where the playercount can sometimes just average 60.

Do you understand that you are applying for the teacher role of UT?
Yes, I understand.

Do you understand if your application is accepted, you will have to undergo teacher training?:
Yes, I will try my best to complete the training sufficiently.

What are the teacher class logs and why are they important?:
The class logs keep track of how many classes a teacher has hosted and how many students were in attendance. It is important as it shows the activity of a teacher and determines their salaries.

I believe this question is talking about the command I’ve overheard some Professors talking about /class call. I’m not too sure about how it works exactly, but I do know that once the command is entered it gets ‘logged’ and a class is scheduled for a Period in the SRP timetable.

As a teacher, what are the strict rules when being in a class?:
-Respect the values and beliefs of others
Karakura is a very diverse place with people of various cultures who hold different religious, social, and political beliefs. Therefore it is very important maintain a good level of respect between the teachers and the students and students to students to ensure that one feels accepted and welcomed in the classroom. This rule is most often broken when students just flippantly swear at faculty in my experience as a student.

-Do not abuse others verbally or physically
I think this one goes without saying, this rule exists to maintain a sense of order in the classroom but also to encourage students to have good behaviours within society. Karakura High has a zero tolerance policy for assault which is any unwanted physical violence. It does not result in a mere warning, but an immediate detention.

-Do not misuse technology such as phones and computers
Again, this rule exists to maintain a sense of order in the class, making sure that all students are paying adequate attention to what is being taught. But also to prevent students from frying their attention span from using their phones and computers too much. In a more practical sense, too often you’ll have people that are either flippantly talking on their phone in class OR blasting music from Blockify en-masse. Teachers can’t just let this happen.

What experience, in general, do you have in roleplay?:
I do not have an extensive background with Roleplay, I have played on and off for the past few years on creative Minecraft servers and Roleplay groups in some other games. I got introduced to SRP about half a year ago and found it interesting. Like I’ve mentioned before I haven’t had that much experience with a role like this so this will be a good learning experience if I am accepted.

Teacher Knowledge

Present to us your knowledge about Teachers in-game and out-of-game, what purpose do teachers serve. What salary do they get? Include a paragraph about the way teachers teach, what they do in their spare time in general.

Teachers are a core component of the server, without them, the school would not be able to function. They serve to educate the students ICly and provide entertainment to players OOCly. It is a teacher's job to make class interesting and engaging, this can be done by diversifying the activities or the topics taught in the class itself. It also helps to put ones maximum effort into roleplaying to make things more interesting. The teachers also serve the role of maintaining a sense of order in the school by making sure that the students are behaving appropriately and conducting their time at school in a productive manner.

Real teachers, however, are often less concerned with making classes interactive and more concerned into making sure every single student is across te syllabus and understands what they need to understand and can do what they need to do for exams. But in a roleplay server, encouraging responsiveness and interaction is key. The history classes in particular, I have seen, do not need to be overly serious in terms of the actual content taught to students. Pretty sure I saw a teacher teaching about Warhammer LORE or something this one time. I WON’T BE DOING THAT, but y’know- I love the spirit: I get the fundamental idea: make things fun, interactive, believable.

A teacher’s salary can be up to ¥500,000 per month.
The salary of a NQT is ¥350,000 per month if 10 classes are completed
The salary of a QT is ¥400,000 per month, the same quota as a NQT
In addition to the 10 classes, for every set of 5 classes completed, a teacher gets paid ¥50,000 extra as their bonus, up to ¥500,000 per month.

Why are teachers important to a SchoolRP server?:
As I have mentioned before, the teachers are a core component of the server, without them, the school aspect of the server would not be able to function at all. They help to immerse other players in the roleplay and facilitate server activity by hosting classes or just roleplaying in the school in general. In my own experience, the server becomes inactive when there are no teachers, therefore, it is very important to have teachers who are in a variety of time zones.

They are also expected to interact with other faculty members, their peers, and collaborate with the radio to ensure troublemakers are dealt with accordingly and also just to promote general collegiate feelings among them to make the school run properly. There is a great value for newcomers in doing this, as they can often rely on the guidance of more older, experienced educators to fill them in on how discipline works and so on.

What lesson planning system does the school work on?:
MosCow:
- Must Have, conditions that must be met for the lesson be able to function normally.
- Should Have, things that should be included in the lesson that would add to the learning but is not absolutely necessary.
- Could Have, things that can be included to the lesson but isn't at all necessary and does not really contribute to the overall learning experience.
- Won’t Have, things that should not be incorporated to the lesson for various reasons, they do not add to the overall learning experience at all.

Character Information

Describe the character: How do they look and act? What makes them unique and different?

Lazarus Komnenos is an ageing man, having a full head of grey hair and a medium-length beard at the age of 57. He is of average male height and has a raspy voice, and usually spotted walking with a cane due to his knee problems. He is well respected by his daughter and regarded as a fount of random obscure knowledge. Although he is a little out of touch due to his age, he tries to keep up to date with the latest news, his daughter informs him of much of the happenings in the town. He is an empathetic person by nature and always willing to help out those who are in need. Many assume him to be a strict and serious person when they learn of his background, but this is precisely the opposite of who he really is. His hobbies include writing storybooks for children, gardening, riding on his bicycle, and going on long soliloquies about the mysteries of the universe and the absurdity of the human experience.

What is their outlook on students and their co-workers?
Lazarus takes great care in educating his students, he sees them as the future of society so he tries his utmost best to foster an upstanding mindset with them. His beliefs are very idealistic, but he knows to be pragmatic with his students as he reminds himself of the struggles and follies of youth. He will often go on very long, expanded soliloquys when students make the very unfortunate mistake of asking him a loaded question like ‘why do bad things happen to good people in history so often?’. He will go into an expansive discussion about how he’d answer the question before talking about various other approaches, and just yapping endlessly, openly encouraging the student to think about the questions.

Regarding his co-workers, because of his beliefs, he tries to maintain a good relationship with them and encourages them to continue their efforts in delivering good education. Unfortunately, Lazarus is very old and often speaks too slowly for the likings of his colleagues and often worries his presence is a burden on them. Consequently, he often strikes his colleagues, as opposed to his students, as rather sheepish.

What are their plans for the future?
Lazarus has no big goals for the future, he is a humble man seeking only to support his family and provide help to those who are in need. As a teacher, his passion is to share his love of history with everyone. He does want to become a prolific writer, however, and wants to encourage his students to look at Karakura’s history in more detail and form their own opinions on it. He sees this as crucial given his own theoretical view of history: he strongly disagrees with the idea history is just a ‘bunch of dates to memorize’.

He wants to strongly encourage students to submit essays to the library about key events in Karakura’s history including their own opinions on how events developed, what they can tell us, and perhaps uncovering unanswered questions.

Scenarios
You find a gang of delinquents in the hallway cursing and swearing, what do you do?:

My character will remain calm and try to understand why the students started cursing in the first place. If the students respond positively and open up about why, my character will try to assist them with whatever issue they are experiencing. If the response from the students is negative and they continue their behaviour, my character will tell them sternly and seriously that this is unacceptable and if the behaviour continues, there will be consequences.

No one in your class is listening to a word you say, what do you do?:
My character would begin by raising his voice and telling the students to pay attention, if they are talking amongst themselves, he will tell them to quiet down. If none of these seems to work, he will issue some verbal warnings to the students, if the behaviour continues, he will give them detention and perhaps remove them from the classroom since they are too disruptive.

When in the teacher's lounge, how does your character act?:
When in the teacher’s lounge, my character will take some time to focus on his work, such as planning for a class or organising documents. If this has already been done, he will try to socialise with coworkers, or just take some time to relax on his own.

Provide at least 4 detailed /me's of your character inside a classroom:

/me
walked towards the desk and put down his briefcase, opening it and taking out some of the necessary documents for today’s class. He then raised his head to greet them, “Good morning everyone, it's very good to see you all, in today’s topic, we will be focusing on the development of sanitation during the late medieval period.” He looked around the class before continuing, “I trust that most of you have completed the reading that I set from the last class….. Nobody? Well… Please try to complete it by the end of this week.”

/me walked towards the visibly upset student, “Hey are you alright? I saw that you were dozing off during class and I noticed that you looked a bit down.” He then sat down on the same bench but kept a moderate distance. “If you’d like, you can speak to me about it, or I can ask to make an appointment with one of the counsellors if you wish.” He never liked seeing a student upset, because it also brought him sadness.

/me cleared his throat and then stood up from his chair, “Alright everybody, we will now be doing a debate, there will be several questions asked, and if you agree, stand on the right, if you disagree, stand on the left, if you don't really have an opinion, remain in the middle.” He then gestured for the students to come closer towards the middle of the classroom, “Okay, the first question… was the Meiji restoration a positive event for Japan?”

/me folded the documents away and put them neatly back into his suitcase, before looking up and smiling at the students, “Good afternoon everyone, thank you for attending the class, and I hope you have a blessed remainder of the day. Please do not forget to complete your readings!” He waited for all the students to leave, before walking out of the classroom and quietly shutting the doors.

Backstory
Lazarus Komnenos was born in Istanbul, Turkey to a Greek family. After finishing his secondary school education, he went on to study teaching at the Marmara University for 4 years. After completing this degree (age 22), because he had a desire to learn about the faith he was brought up with, he then went on to study theology in Thessaloniki, Greece, also for a length of 4 years (age 26). At the Theological School in Thessaloniki, Lazarus became acquainted with a female classmate named Nektaria Laskaris.

The two became friends shortly after, they spent a lot of time together and soon grew close to one another. Lazarus proposed to Nektaria after finishing the theological degree. The two got married soon after, his wife gave birth to a daughter who was subsequently named “Serafíma” by her grandfather. The family would visit Greece very often and stay there over an extended period of time, during these times, Lazarus worked as a part-time teacher at a local primary school. A few years later, Nektaria was diagnosed with stage-4 stomach cancer and passed away after a few months, this tragedy, combined with other complications caused the widower and his daughter to move from Turkey to Japan to seek a better life. Lazarus, with his connections established in the Orthodox Church while studying in Thessaloniki, was able to find a job within the Orthodox Community in Japan, as a preacher and Sunday School teacher in Oshima.

With these roles, he was able to support his family financially, however, an electric fire broke out one night inside the church and caused the entire church to be burnt down. The community did not have enough funds for repairs and rebuilding and so Lazarus was out of a job, desperate for a way to support his family. Seeing its proximity to Oshima, he then turned to seek a job in Karakura, moving to the town there in the spring of 2020. With his teaching degree and prior experience in different fields of education, he was accepted as a history teacher at the Karakura High School.
