Backstory:

ᔕ Chapter 1:

Shōya had grown up in a healthy household and lived alone with his mother. Miyako Sawada, his mother, took great care of Shōya. Despite the death of her husband, her bond with Shōya remained strong. His mother is financially supported by her brother, Shōya's uncle. In his early years, Shōya behaved rather dismissively towards his mother as she always saw him as very cute and small. Over time, Shōya went to preschool and was quite popular with the other children. When he finished preschool, many of the friends he once had left town with their families. Nevertheless, Shōya quickly made new friends at elementary school. Over the years, Shōya stuck to his average childhood (hanging out with friends, going out, riding his bike, etc.) while continuing to go to school. His relationship with his mother eventually became much stronger, and he would never admit it, but he finds his mother's attitude towards him endearing.

ᔕ Chapter 2:
Everything had changed one day when a new student came to the elementary school Shōya attended. A little deaf girl who many of his friends wanted to bully. Shōya had followed in her footsteps and bullied her too. At one point, Shōya had broken one of her hearing aids by throwing it onto the street, whereupon a car drove over it, and his mother had to pay for it with almost a million yen. His friends had inevitably turned on him and abandoned him when the teacher had asked who had bullied the girl, and Shōya decided to be honest. Shōya had tried to argue, but it was far too late. The deaf girl eventually changed schools because of the constant bullying. Shōya then also experienced the bullying, which he had to endure until the end of elementary school. At this point, he only had his own mother, and his mother eventually adopted a little girl who is also deaf. He avoided his new sister because he realized and understood how bad it was for deaf people. After his "friends" turned on him, he began to not trust people in general. He usually avoids eye contact because he feels uncomfortable making eye contact with someone he does not know. He lacks trust in anyone and everyone, which is now hard to gain from Shōya.

ᔕ Chapter 3:
Shōya is solitary, introverted and suffers from social anxiety. He cannot look others in the eye, and this perception is interpreted through crosses on the faces of others. He has learned Japanese sign language, and because of the deaf girl he had bullied, he felt it was his duty to learn it at least as an apology, even if she would never know. He decided not to contact anyone in high school. Thankfully, the bullying from others against Shōya stopped. He paid his mother a million yen in the hope of getting rid of his debt for making his mother pay for the girl's broken hearing aids, which he managed to do by working odd jobs and selling his own things. Having lost all hope of a better life, he wanted to end it. But then he came to his senses and told himself that he had to try to start a new life. He asked his mother if she could help him change schools, which she did, and decided to enrol him in a new high school, Karakura High. Shōya then packed his things and moved to Karakura. His mother hopes for a good development for Shōya in Karakura. Shōya's journey in Karakura started here.
