Shadow often wondered if they were to blame for being left behind. Were they too much to handle? Were they bad?
Life in the hospital was regimented but devoid of warmth. The twins were labeled as “peculiar,” their striking red-tinged eyes earning them the nicknames "Lucifer’s Daughters" and "Princesses of Hell" from the staff and other children. Shadow didn’t mind the names for herself, but she loathed how they affected Scarlet. She became her sister’s protector, shielding her from cruel taunts and comforting her during long, tear-filled nights.
Despite the sterile environment, the twins found ways to escape into their imaginations. Shadow discovered a love for reading, losing herself in tales of heroes who triumphed over adversity. Scarlet, the more artistic of the two, spent hours sketching fantastical creatures and landscapes. They promised each other that one day they’d leave the hospital and create a life where they could be free.

Moving to Karakura, Japan​

That chance came when they turned eighteen. The hospital, no longer legally responsible for them, gave them a small stipend and sent them out into the world. Armed with little more than determination, the twins decided to leave South Korea and start fresh in Karakura, Japan—a town Shadow had read about in one of her books.
Adjusting to life outside the hospital was both exhilarating and terrifying. They rented a tiny, dimly lit apartment in a rundown building on the edge of Karakura. It wasn’t much, but it was theirs. Shadow took a part-time job at a convenience store, while Scarlet started selling her artwork online.
The cultural shift was overwhelming at first, but Shadow quickly found solace in the quiet beauty of Karakura’s streets and the anonymity the town offered. For the first time, they weren’t “the demon twins.” They were just two girls trying to build a life from scratch.
