SIMPLE GUIDE ON PAINRP

Winters

Level 18
"54_BlackStar, How do I PainRP? I'm stuck!"
said nobody ever

WARNING: This guide is for new red-tags who want to get into CrimeRP, but could be a little bit helpful for more experienced players, though they are not the intended audience.

Ok, as somebody who has been stabbed, slashed, and killed, more times than I'd care to admit, and a GangRP addict, I'd like to provide a simple and clean guide on how to properly PainRoleplay, as some newer players MAY be having somestruggles. If you are new to gangrp, and are not struggling with proper PainRP, that's great for you!
Anyways, as I said before, this guide is for NEW players, who are not as experienced with GangRP, and may make a few issues with PainRP, and for P2L scenarios.
A lot of times, PainRP is crucial for a better roleplay experience, but don't go full blast with it, it may make some people uncomfortable :)

Chapter 1 -> DetailRP
I may make a guide on this later, but DetailRPing is crucial if you want to properly portray your character's feelings / situation in any situation, whether it involves them getting swirlied by mean jocks, or having a nice pointy object through the liver, you want to detailRP.
The key to DetailRPing properly is not just to fluff up your text like you would on an english document with a word requirement, but to use vivid imagery:
You want to describe the following:
- What your character sees,
- What your character hears
- What your character feels
- What your character smells /tastes (Not as important)

Example of a not-so-detailed conflict:

John Doe: Stabs Eric in the liver
Eric: Screams bloody murder.

This looks fine, right?
WRONG! THIS IS TERRIBLE AND AWFUL. AND THEY SHOULD BE BANNED FOREVER!!
I haven't personally been stabbed IRL, but Eric should be in a little bit more shock first, then he could start screaming around, after being turned into a pin cushion.

Let's add some shock to Eric's response before we talk about John Doe.

John Doe: Stabs Eric in the liver
Eric: Stumbles backwards, wide-eyed. He stared down at the katana, before screaming and falling.

For an ameteur roleplayer, this is pretty good, and if you started roleplaying like the first set of actions, this is already a huge amount of progress.

We should be able to add more though, this isn't near done. First of all, Eric's actions were very simple, and if we add some description of Eric's features, and the environment around him, we already hit a bunch of boxes on our checklists.

Let's add some detail to Eric's response before we talk about John Doe.
John Doe stabs Eric in the liver
Eric stumbled backwards, his breath hitching. His olive hands twitched, reaching for the blade. He looked down, choking on air, a thin line of vivid, coppery blood escaped his mouth. He gasped, stepping back, tripping over nothing, falling into a seated position. Shock hit him, and he opened his mouth, a scream exiting his lips. He tried his hardest to not cry, the pain overwhelming his senses, he felt like he was going to throw up, and he was already heaving up blood and spit.

Already, from the first and second actions, this is a HUGE improvement. We described Eric's features, made it easy to visualize the blood, his shock, feelings. You could visualize Eric pretty easily now. This is a GREAT place to be at in roleplay, but it is not perfect. Nothing is, but we are trying to get as close to perfect as we can.

First, we do not describe Eric's face that well, we say that he is in shock, but that's it, all we know is that he is bleeding from his mouth, and dry heaving from the pain, and that he has olive skin.

Let's add some description of eric to Eric's response before we talk about John Doe.

John Doe stabs Eric in the liver, then pulled the katana out.
Eric stumbled backwards, his breath hitched, a slight gasp being released. His olive hands twitched, he reached for the blade then looked down, choking on air, a thin line of coppery blood, so vivid, so alive, so.. him, escaped his mouth. He gasped, his sharp features contouring into a mix of horror as he came to the realization that his life may be over. He stepped back, tripping over nothing, falling into a seated position. He opened his mouth, screaming at the top of his lungs, until his voice cracked, his gray eyes glossed over, trying as hard as they could to hold in his tears. His heartrate accelerated, becoming too fast to be healthy, he could feel it pounding in his throat. His chalk-coloured Tee now stained with a giant pool of his blood, he felt dizzy, almost, and he fell backwards, not wanting to move. His brown bangs, once neatly styled, fell in a mess across his forehead, the strobe light causing his eyes to squint. He swallowed, a tear rolling down his cheek, closing his eyes, which would never be opened again.

Now, I'm not going to act like I'm some roleplay god, I'm not close to the best, and that last message could certainly use some editing, and is definitely not perfect, but it is definitely a good place to be at, if you want to get into DetailRPing your pain.
This is definately vivid though, and I can picture Eric, and it uses common words and phrases, which means the average person doesn't need a dictionary to understand what somebody's character is doing, which some RolePlayers sometimes (unintentionally) do.

Chapter 2 -> But why?

Good question (that you didn't even ask,) when somebody is in a fight, often times they won't feel pain from attacks for a tiny bit (Even major injuries, like a bullet wound, or being stabbed,) due to adrenaline. Of course, they will feel the pain a few seconds to minutes after... or, if they're lucky not feel it until they get to the hospital.

Chapter 3 -> What else?
Here is the structure of your action if you are put through major pain, if you need a little more help:
[Shock phase, describe how they look at the attacking weapon / fall back etc] [Sound phase] [Pain phase: You can stay silent, roll around, clutch the wound, etc, all are valid.] [Optional: Pass out at the end]
Example:
[John doe: Grabbed a fistful of Eric's bangs, staring him in the eyes, before slamming a pipe wrench into the side of Eric's ribs, "Not so funny now, pretty boy?"]
[(Shock phase) Eric fell with his chair, the force of the strike coursing through his ribs, a throbbing sensation filled his gut, it felt almost.. warm. (Skipping sound phase) (Pain phase) A ringing sound played through his ears, silencing any thought he had, he coughed up spit onto the floor, turning his head to the side. "Owwww!!" he groaned, "FUCK!" He shook in his binds, the rope burning his wrists. He tried to breathe, but what came out was a long, raspy, gasp, as if he was being suffocated. His rib was definately cracked after that. He started to cry, ignoring John Doe's taunts.]

Here is the structure of your action if you are put through minor / annoying pain:
Recommendations:
- Your character curses ([name] cursed)
- Clutches the injured area
- Becomes annoyed with the people around them

[Injury phase] [Reaction phase: Dialogue, recoiling, cursing, etc]
Example:
[(Injury phase) Crack! John's fist connected with Eric's face. He flinched, his head turning to the side from the impact, the skin throbbing. (Reaction phase) "FUCK!" he yelled, still tied down to the chair. He laughed a little, something he didn't even understand why he was doing. His lip was busted, and bleeding, the adrenaline coursing through his veins. "Is that all you got?" he taunts, showing off his... stupidity?]

One of the first things that hits when you are in a lot of pain is shock, before the pain even begins. It is common to feel almost dumbfounded, then the pain hits.
Something that happens DURING pain is nausea / the feeling that you need to throw up, a feeling of weakness / fatigue, ringing in your ears, your heartrate accelerating, and of course, falling over (Because I said so, and I'm always right.)
It is entirely possible to pass out from pain, and likely, especially if you get turned into one of those olives that are on the top of sandwiches.
Heaving, gasping, your breath being caught, choking, are also common, and could add more detail if you feel like you do not know what to do.

DetailRP varies from user to user, and painRP is different for every character. It took me a while to figure this out (More than I am willing to admit,) and I hope you can get into CriminalRP, it was one of my favorite things to do on SRP in the early 2020s!

Big W, people actually taking time to PainRP (or even just reacting to opponent actions as a whole) would go a long way in making even regular roll combat much more fun and engaging.

I always found it so weird that people would continue fighting at full coordination and strength after having been smashed over the head by a bat, for one.

Have you ever had your head slammed by something? Bashed your head against a door or other object by mistake? Yeah, well, imagine that except it's solid metal and completely concentrated on the top of your head to inflict as much damage as possible, likely five times harder in impact force. A single good punch to the head can be enough to disorient and severely reduce someone's capabilities in a fight, never mind a blunt weapon.
