Backstory:
Verena was born and raised as the only child to a strict, religious family in the countryside of Japan. Her mother stayed at home often and her father worked as a priest to support the household. Between helping her mother around the house, living up to her family's expectations, and praying, she never had the opportunity to try out school activities or further develop connections with classmates. Verena’s relationship with her parents began to dwindle as her desire for freedom grew and she began to act out. In retaliation, her parents pressured her daily, abusing and torturing her when they deemed necessary. After Verena turned thirteen, she came across a book in school about Shintoism. Being the curious kid she is, she instantly began to research more about religion, looking for a way out of her own life. As a few years passed, her mom got extremely sick and tragically passed away. Her father started heavily drinking and left Verena to fend for herself. While on her own, Verena came across a shrine in a small town called Karakura. In the shrine, she became acquainted with a maiden, Eli Saito. Eli suggested Verena talk to Haru Saito, the head of the Saito family. After explaining her situation, Haru welcomed her with open arms and accepted her as their new sister.
