Backstory:

(Important parts are underlined if it’s TL:DR.)

Veronika Baev was born in Chelyabinsk, Russia. Her earliest memories are hazy, with Vee being just four years old when her mother died due to complications following a protest she participated in. The reason was never fully explained to her, only whispered about during family events. Though it was never truly explained to her, her mind filled in the blanks of the details of her mother’s execution. Despite the shadow of loss, Vee's childhood wasn’t cold. Her father tried to be enough to fill both roles. He worked hard and came home tired, but always seemed to have time to help with homework and make a home cooked meal. Still, love doesn’t replace connection. As an only child in a city where neighbors didn’t talk much, Vee grew up lonely.

She was always curious, always watching.. people on buses, stray animals, classmates she never spoke to. That curiosity helped her survive, but it also twisted into anxiety and overthinking. She learned to fill silences by talking too much, to mask nervousness with jokes, and to mirror others just to feel included. She was always the outsider looking in. Everything changed at 14, when her father was offered a job in Karakura, Japan. To him, it was a professional leap forward, with the promise of even more in the future. To Vee, it was an escape. A chance to shed her past like old skin. Landing in Japan felt like waking up in someone else’s dream. An entire world with new words, new faces. She didn’t hesitate to dive in.

She adapted quickly. First by picking up the language, then the fashion, and the culture. She learned how to disappear in crowds, how to become someone new. The thrift shops of Karakura became her sanctuary, each piece of clothing a layer in the persona she was creating. She started going by “Vee,” a name that felt more fluid, less tied to her ghostly past of Chelyabinsk. And yet, despite her reinvention, her old habits linger. The overthinking, the way she watches people just a little too long, unintentionally listening to conversations that aren’t hers, her need to know. Always having her phone is close, filled with photos, notes, and… other things she probably shouldn’t admit to collecting. There's a thin line between curiosity and obsession, and Vee's never quite sure where she stands.

Even her past is never too far behind. It doesn't haunt her, but it shapes her, reminding her that loneliness is loudest when you're surrounded by people. Still, she’s happier than she’s ever been. Her life in Karakura is her own, no longer shaped by choices made before she was old enough to understand them. It’s a city of reinvention, a stage where she can be anybody she wants.
