Why are Teachers so important to SchoolRP?:
Teachers orchestrate a significant amount of important roleplay environments. They are characters with a role designed to immerse players in the school setting. With players spending such a great percentage of their playtime on school grounds, teachers are vital for making that time interesting and engaging. Additionally, with high-school grades being a generally more accessible role than college roles, a much greater portion of the playerbase will seek classes with teachers in comparison to professors. More than likely, a teacher will be one of a new player's first roleplay interactions. In that sense, a teacher majorly impacts whether a player returns to the server. Teachers are crucial in providing a consistent and recurring playerbase. Overall, teachers are a cornerstone in enabling the ‘School’ in ‘SchoolRP’.
Do you acknowledge that if you are inactive you may lose your role?: Yes
Do you agree to undergo teacher training if your application is successful?: Yes
In-Character Section
What's your character's full name?: Moriel Maeng
What is your character's nationality?: Korean
What is your preferred subject to teach?: Science (Physics)
Describe your character:
Moriel Maeng is a Korean male standing at 5'8". He has tousled black hair, showcasing his energetic and eccentric goofball energy. His irises are a shade of grey, a rare color that thematically emphasizes the emotions he heavily expresses with his eyes. This character has had a long history with the server: As a result of SchoolRP's 2020 ghost possession event in Itsbyoshi Forest, he's developed a scar on his leg during a near-death experience. It reminds him to value his life, and treasure the moments he has with those around him. You'll find Moriel always on the move, seeking new experiences with his friends or even engaging in adventures with people he just met. He is spirited, playful, and mischievous and almost any character affiliated with him can vouch for that. His position as the eldest brother has led him to developing a caretaker mindset. He's always trying to stick his neck out for his family and those close to him. However, that comes with his character flaws: He often attempts to help in situations where he realistically can't do anything, and blame himself when his efforts are fruitless. For the foreseeable future, he plans to stay in Karakura and look after his family, providing for them where he can.
What is your character's outlook on students and co-workers?:
Moriel has experience working in environments alongside peers. He tries to make friendly relations with those he'll be working with and would make efforts to ensuring the dynamic between them is hospitable. Additionally, he'd be interested in collaborating with other teachers, possibly combining class sessions to promote both subjects. Moriel sees the general student population as a group that's been neglected for too long. He realizes that students are generally unenthusiastic to learn, and often engage in physical altercations on school grounds. Moriel feels motivated to encourage these students to find subjects they are passionate about, so that they may pursue a healthy interest instead of resorting to harmful recreation.
What is your character's motivation for teaching?:
Moriel Maeng is a social butterfly with a personal moral desire to help. Moreso, Moriel has ill feelings about Karakura’s growing crime rate, especially among youth. By taking on the role of a teacher, he hopes to steer the students of Karakura in the right direction. Moriel figures that the prevalent crime rate in the city may be associated with a lack of available guidance. Moriel hopes to provide a small hand in paving the way to raising a safe and successful generation. In a more general sense, he also holds a goal of making educational experiences entertaining. Moriel has a history of public stunts, and having the ability to engage a crowd of people in a unique learning opportunity is a concept he’s certainly interested in.
Roleplay Scenarios
A student in class is struggling to understand the content, what would your character do?:
Upon noticing the struggling student, Moriel Maeng would try to offer alternative explanation to the lesson: Moriel places importance on reading the room and ensuring that all students are properly engaged. He'd likely consider the possibility that if one student is confused, others might be silently struggling as well. With all this in mind, he'd poll the class, asking which parts are confusing and how he could assist them in understanding the material. Furthermore, Moriel would consider making a game out of the lesson, in hoping that is a more effective and engaging means of education as a result of his playful nature. Additionally, Moriel is generally willing to spend his time offering assistance to those in need. Moriel would offer office hours during lunch or inactive class periods if the student chooses to spend more time on the lesson.
A student is continuously being disruptive in class, talking out of turn, and making jokes with classmates. What would your character do?:
Moriel Maeng’s general style of mediation is to politely defuse the situation and then adopt a more strict tone if it escalates. Moriel would offer an initially polite and light-hearted declaration to the disruptive student, stating that they need to quit hindering the progression of the lesson. If the student refuses to settle down, Moriel Maeng would state that they need to cease their disruptions or will be kicked from the class. That statement would serve as a warning, and further disruptive behavior would lead to him kicking the student out of class.
Provide at least 2 interactive class ideas related to your preferred subject:
1. A large pendulum will be set up in the classroom. Moriel Maeng will start with a demonstration: He will raise the end of the pendulum just beside his head, and the students will observe that once he releases it, the pendulum will swing back exactly to the starting point and just barely miss his head. He assigns the students to add weight to the pendulum in whatever way they see fit, with the goal of replicating the experiment but having the pendulum actually strike Moriel down. The students will find that no matter what, the pendulum will never hit the teacher. Through this, students will learn about potential energy, kinetic energy, and energy conversion: Due to the law of conservation of energy, the pendulum will never have enough energy to strike the professor.
2. Moriel Maeng will bring the class to the track field. Each student will be given a water ballon and will be instructed to stand in a straight line. Moriel will take his stand at a distance and instruct the students to throw the water balloon with himself serving as a target, taking note of whether they hit him or miss (which will be decided via /roll). The students would take note on how far the water balloon travelled and return to class. There, Moriel will offer the students to brainstorm. He would introduce the idea of kinematics and their core variables (initial/final velocity, distance, time, acceleration). With these aspects in mind, he would encourage the students to apply this knowledge to the water balloon activity, inviting them to offer explanations on how altering these variables would affect their results in the activity. The main goal of this assignment would be to teach students the concept of kinematics and objects in motion using an engaging and exciting activity.
