What's your suggestion?:
I want to preface this suggestion by saying this is not to undermine the current map, rather it comes from a place of expansion for buildings/areas that already exist.
When I walk around Karakura, it is extremely easy to tell what the surrounding harbors without physically moving my character into those said areas. It has a lot of open space, that doesn’t change, whether you stand far, or close. Essentially, what you see is what exists. A lot of the times I believe this makes exploration mundane, and parts of the map as well. There seem to be so many buildings around, yet not many to enter other than player ran shops and apartments.
What if, the further you move into the city, the more you see? You turn a corner, and suddenly there’s a little places that had been hidden all along. It would give immense opportunities for roleplay. Of course, it is not something that will magically create roleplay, it still requires players to use those places, but as someone very attuned to atmosphere and ambience, I believe those make a huge difference in my immersion to roleplay.
Now, to make this a bit less vague, I suggest adding smaller streets, little alleys such as in SD, being able to enter more buildings and even have some places lead underground that isn’t just the sewers. These little places could even be fragments of lore, just like the abandoned train station. I adore places like the arcade, cinema and even laundromat, and while I do believe they could use a tiny revamp in decorations and overall making them a bit more interesting, I also believe they serve great roleplay places.
Overall this suggestion is focused on a general map improvement, however, I want to dedicate a small section to crime. I believe that adding these places that aren’t turfs would create great ways for the Crime Faction to gain more traction again. Especially more underground places or sketchy alleyways.
All in all, the map should feel like something constantly expanding despite it staying the same, merely because of little places you keep finding. My best example would be the Cyberpunk 2077 map. Every corner you find something new that has yet to be explored and is somewhat secluded from the far eye.
Here are some concrete places I would love to see:
- A Jazz Kissa! These are/were (a bit of an older trend…) extremely popular in Japan. They are a space intended for.. who would have thought, jazz music! It is a social place which usually accommodates guests with drinks and smaller snacks, similar to a café! I think a more run down look could be a great vibe, some secluded stairs in a side street leading down to a basement entrance. The only suggestion a place harbors below would be the faint music. This could fit extremely well into SD or even the business district. Can’t forget the yellow, dim light that room would have, a bit of a moody place for slice of life RP! (This is like the one super specific example, the rest are more open for interpretation and creativity!)
- More alleys! Some more sketchy than the others. Maybe even a small food stall somewhere. The kind of place only locals know about if you’d imagine it in real life. Tiny makeshift seating areas from neighbors nearby could decorate those small streets, or a vending machine that is always the place for a midnight snack. (I know we have many of those around, but making a dedicated spot, that would make you want to hang around, would be amazing.)
- Smaller places inside the lower part of buildings open to the public. An internet café? (Those often tend to run 24/7 without employees so this could very well just function as a place of existence without needing attending to it, and even some places who do typically need employees exist , so I don’t think this would be an issue.) Waiting areas near bus stops! Or maybe even some kind of lobbies people sometimes loiter in. Any kind of space that gets people together really. As of now I find that many just rely on roleplay inside of apartment buildings, which in turn supports people staying in smaller groups rather than expanding outwards for roleplay. Those places could allow for nice areas to roleplay in while also keeping opportunities open for additions to the roleplay such as other people. Or or! A karaoke bar!!!
- All in all, places that make you enter them for exploration, rather than simply looking its way once and already knowing everything that the place harbors.
(I wanted to add mood boards but my phone doesn’t allow me to, sorry… Use your imagination, or something!!)
I know people get cooked on the suggestions a lot. I would love to hear everyone’s thoughts, but I hope it can stay civil! #Positivity #Joymax #Lovelife
How will this benefit the server and community?:
I think this would help the community feel more passionate about roleplaying outside of their apartments/school. I find that people are either just in school due to needing to be there, and once over everyone stays in their groups and moves to private property. Which is fine, in the end, sometimes you do just want to do your own thing! But these places could help promote more roleplay with new people, new interactions, and offering a more server presence.
For crime specifically, I think adding places that aren’t just turfs could also be great to boost traction like mentioned. I often shy away from loitering around the other open turf as it is not the one I wish to claim, but if there were places that just generally serve more as those hotspots for interactions, I would constantly be there. It would mean people went there to roleplay for the roleplay itself, not just to use the motive of turf for perms or simply to claim it and evade interactions with other gangs.
Lastly, I think it would just make exploration fun for everyone, maybe even letting people experience lore through these little places rather than just reading about it on the forums!!!
