THE SPOOKIEST SPOTS AROUND KARAKURA
An October Special by Lysander Vale
The Forest
There's something unnatural about the woods when the sun is set behind the trees. While during the day Karakura's forests are a lovely place to visit, wander, and explore, at night, they seem to take a far more lively role in the lives of the wandering. The trees grow taller and seem to stretch and reach for the sky, while the winds whisper and sing amongst the leaves. It is no mystery as to why nature has given us so many tales and legends, and Karakura's forests are no exception to this rule. From the fear of getting lost to the fear of the dark, the forest has provided us with a plethora of spooky stories to pass the time on a cloudy night. Of course, one need not jump to the conclusion that a rustling in the woods means a ghost or monster, but there are few who would not be spooked at a mysterious noise in the dark! Might I dare ask you, dear reader, if you would be afraid? Or, if you would venture out into the woods on a night as dark as this, alone and unprotected? And if not, would you be content to stay inside?
The Thaumiel Shrine
What is it that makes shrines so fascinating? The local Thaumiel Shrine, with it's tales of Kitsa, the nine-tailed fox-mask woman of nine souls, is certainly one of my personal favorites. With it's unique brand of mythos, the Thaumiel Shrine is a place most curious to visit, especially in the month of October! Shrines, however, have a reputation for being haunted, and the Thaumiel is no exception to this superstition. The mystery of the Kitsa seems certainly to have contributed to this rumor. Are hauntings real, or is it nothing more than mystery? I say, let's investigate both! There's no reason to dismiss old tales and superstitions just because they're old! Instead, take a trip to the Thaumiel and spend a few hours learning what you can about it's storied past. And above all, if you are to visit this shrine of legend, remember to show proper respect! While most shrines are perfectly safe to visit, they are sacred places and ought to be treated so.
Tucked away in the woods, the abandoned shed is sure to give any visitor the creeps. While the trails and paths through the woods are perfectly fine to travel, an abandoned building standing alone in the trees can stir up quite the frenzy of rumors and superstitious beliefs! But what is it that makes these old, forgotten shacks so interesting? Perhaps it is their secrecy? Perhaps it is some old tale that haunts the area? Or perhaps it is simply their location? Whatever the case may be, there are plenty who would be intrigued by the idea of finding out what this old building was used for, and why it was abandoned. However, with the distance from the main roads, it is certain that not much is known about this place other than the rumors. Some might say it belonged to a woodsman, or perhaps it once belonged to someone important. However, there is little reason to believe that theory more then the other. But I say, isn't this what makes it interesting? The possibilities are as endless as one's imagination, and with that in mind, the next time you see one of these old buildings, be sure to take notice! A building so secretive, so mysterious, so far from prying eyes certainly warrants a trip to the woods to satisfy that ever-growing thirst for knowledge, wouldn't you agree? However, curiosity can be a dangerous thing, and one must not forget that these buildings are often unstable and should be approached with caution.
Karakura's beach is an odd place to suggest as a haunted, or even scary, location. After all, it is known for it's beauty and charm. The waves gently lap against the shore, the sky is clear and calm, and the city's elite gather for parties and fun. However, when the sun sets and night falls, the beach takes on a far more mysterious quality. The waves roll in against the sand, dark and mysterious, and one cannot see much beyond the shore. Unlike the trees of the forest, the ocean is vast and unknowable, and the legends and superstitions that surround it seem all the more real at night. There is nothing wrong with wanting to investigate these strange ideas or visit some of the local ghost stories. However, please, be safe and do not venture too close to the water when visiting this haunted location. The beach, while certainly mysterious, is not a place for ghost-hunting.
FINAL THOUGHTS - WHICH SPOT TAKES THE TITLE?
So that was my article on Karakura's spookiest locations. As you can see, there are many fascinating and intriguing places and stories to be investigated. Some places are interesting for their history, some for their mystery, and some yet for their stories. However, I believe that there is no place that is so scary and mysterious as to warrant a reputation of its own. While stories and superstitions may give us strange ideas to investigate, there are few facts to be found in old rumors.
As the night falls on October the 31st and Halloween draws near, I would ask the people of Karakura, which of these spooky spots takes the prize for being the creepiest? After reviewing the results.. We have a clear winner of.. The forest!! The forest got a total of 24 votes!! The sewers a close second, then the shed, then the shrine, and lastly the beach!!
This is Lysander Vale, reporting for Karakura. Have a hauntingly wonderful October!
