Backstory:
Before Reiko's birth, her mother, Eva Vallelonga ran away from home pregnant, expecting twins. She stole her husband's car and drove all the way to Shirakawa-go, Ōno District, Gifu prefecture, Japan. Though it wasn't her intended destination, she ended up giving birth to Reiko and Jiro Onodera on March 30th, 1996, while residing in the village. Eventually, the concerned, and frankly, enraged family called the police, who were able to locate the runaway mother in a few days, dragging her back to Kaga in Ishikawa prefecture.
Reiko and her brother grew up at a lighthouse on Katanomachi Beach in Kaga. The Onodera family was known for caring for the local lighthouse for generations. At this point, it looked like the twins would be another addition to the wickie bloodline. They both worked from a young age, attended a simple primary school, and never ventured outside of Kaga itself. The only contrast in their bleak world was their mom, who taught them how to speak Italian and cooked the most wondrous meals after a long day.
It was on the night of August 4th, 2003, when Reiko was seven years old, that her life was torn to shreds. Eva took her by her hand, and led her up the spiraling stairs of the lighthouse, all the way to the lens. They stood there a minute or two before Eva looked down at her daughter with a smile. The beacon spun once, twice, thrice. The little girl covered her eyes, but when she opened them, her mother was nowhere to be seen. Reiko stood on the empty platform, accompanied by darkness and the sound of the foghorn.
"Where's Ma?"
"When's Ma coming back?"
"Can we go visit Ma?"
It was as if someone had lit a match in a pitch-black room. Reiko began to study hard, despite her grandfather's disapproving comments. Her father and brother joined in after some time, but it seemed like the discouraging remarks never reached her. After years of effort, a letter came, containing news about a scholarship. The three generations of Onodera wickies were shocked at her sudden determination. Words that shouldn't have been said were yelled, slaps were thrown. The girl packed her monotone clothes and took off to Karakura.
The larger city was quite the shocker to Reiko. She didn't have a plan, but the best kind of plan is no plan at all. She didn't mind sleeping on the streets, since it wasn't far from her old bed anyway. While living the street urchin life, Reiko met her now best friend, Otsuki (or as she called her, 'Osca') Kenji. They understood each other, despite coming from completely different corners of Japan. Otsuki's passion for rock and music, in general, drew Reiko in, and she was in awe of her friend's neverending belief that they were gonna make it big one day. Even after getting scammed and beat up, which resulted in Reiko losing her front tooth, Otsuki didn't back down.
"When you play for real, something's gotta give."
Karakura wasn't kind to the pair, but they managed. The girls went from sleeping on a stone floor to crashing at friends' places, to breaking in and somehow making friends with the homeowners, to renting rooms, to renting apartments. Together, they saved money and fished the hell out of every pond. Life was looking up, but Reiko missed something. She longed to feel like she had a family, so when she saw a booklet about a civilized gang, she was intrigued.
Reiko ended up joining the gang, much to Otsuki's disappointment. She learned how to fight, and left graffiti promoting her new 'family' all over town. Moving up in the ranks, she felt more powerful than ever, until she messed with the wrong person. Otsuki and Reiko were jumped by a woman in the Karakura powerplant, who demanded the girls give her 5000 yen. Upon their refusal, the woman attacked Otsuki. They wouldn't lose this time - to hell with losing. And so they knocked their opponent out. Feeling a sense of accomplishment, Reiko lowered her guard, which could have got her killed. Some days later, four masked people jumped her and stabbed her in the eye.
After witnessing a fellow gang member getting his finger chopped off and letting her cowardice stop her, she realized being in a gang was no way to live. She resigned and instead focused on her studies again. To her dismay, gang activity was going to have yet another bite of her sweet life. Reiko's boyfriend, Shizuya, got murdered about a week after she quit her gang. She lost much of her enthusiasm after that, burying herself in textbooks and encyclopedias, just like when she was younger. Perhaps it would be best to devote herself to studying, for now, she thought. It got her enrolled in a prestigious school, so it could certainly get her even higher, couldn't it?
