What's your Minecraft Username?: fredtastic
What's the title of your suggestion?: Dorms changes

What's your suggestion?:
My suggestion is simply based on giving team members more chances to customize theirs dorms. As of right now, dorms are working like miniature apartments for 2 players. They have permissions to that room, but not to the common room / hallways. This causes most common rooms to be empty due to lack of builders and the hallways to look 'dead' unless a certain event happened.

Here is my suggestion

We could introduce a middle ground between the old team houses and the current dorms. Basically, each team would be given a floor (half a floor for smaller teams) which they could fully customize. The room distribution and decoration and would be up to the team. That way, every single floor could be unique. In a way, it would be a big, front-door -less team apartment. Captains would 'own' this region.

Of course, this would mean editing the current regions and possibly adding a floor to the current dorms to fit every team.

How will this benefit the server and community?:
The addition of the dorms were a great idea! It's now very easy to find team members and interact with them. Rivarly is also much more easy that way! Of course, adding my suggestion would help the community benefit even more from the dorms.

1. Roleplay opportunity

As of right now, we can really only roleplay in the actual dorm rooms. The rest of the building are almost unused. It's a lot of wasted opportunities and space. With a customized living space, most rooms would now be much more used for hangouts and roleplay scenarios. Also, it would give more 'prank' options rivarly-wise.

2. Dorms personality.

With this idea implemented, I could easily see teams choosing to show their personalities with their dorms. For example, a football team could decide to change their whole living room in a beer-pong room for parties, etc.

3. Dorms swapping problems.

Now, when a team member leaves a team, staff has to manually remove them from the dorm, which can take a while / get upsetting for the new team members who can't have a dorm. With this suggestion, the captains would be in charge of adding / removing players from the region.

Note: If this suggestion isn't possible. Giving captains / players possibility to edit the hallway and common rooms while still keeping the same wall layout could be a possible middle ground.

Waiting for your opinions about this :)

I feel as though the dorms were not really built with teams in mind, ironically. It feels like it was just fit to fit players in and nothing else.

I wish that both the common rooms and hallways were customizable, if not by the teams then at LEAST the captains! This can make pranks easier but also just keep things fresh and on brand? theme? I dunno if that makes sense but you catch my drift, surely!!

I had seen someone else state this so I am going to mention it here as well - The buildings themselves are small and there's little space for a bunch of people to stand without standing inside one another.. aside from the courtyard that is. This can make not only roleplay but rivalry really difficult when you cant see or fit inside the building.

I think this adds a little personality to each floor, giving them a unique look! I like it.

With the use of elevators to hop from floor to floor and a door to enter each (under the captain's ownership), I think this would be wonderful.

Coming from a captain, the dorm disowning problem gets very repetitive and annoying. I think opening the plain entirely would make for more unique settings, as it's each team's choice what is built with the space given. I also think it'd be fun for each team to have the opportunity to host parties on their floor, inviting people in to a more secluded yet accessible area.

This idea wouldn't change the current dorm builds drastically, mainly the property lines and ownership. It could draw more attention to the space and make for more inclusive events, as it's a combination of team towers (floors), houses, and dorms. If we're talking about how they'd help teams and encourage roleplay as a whole, then I'd like to point out how this suggestion provides more for rival-teams to 'trash' or 'storm.' It's conveniently just as accessible as any dorm, it just has a larger range of choices regarding places to initiate roleplay. (I ALSO VERY MUCH MISS HAVING TEAM MEETINGS IN THE HOUSES!)

Saying there’s a “lack of builders” isn’t really fair considering the dorms have been around for over a year and not once have I been asked to edit any aspect of the dorms and I’m pretty sure other builders can say the same thing.

my main quarrel with this is consistency. It’s one thing allowing someone to edit an interior however they wish, but editing an exterior requires SRP builder attention for the sake of keeping everything consistent because the entire playerbase will be able to access and look at it. I fear it will end up the same way team houses did which was part of the reason dorms were even constructed.

A counter suggestion I’d say would be to ask your faction lead (or suggest to your faction lead) to open up a channel to make build requests on the hallways so a builder can come in and make the necessary changes without straying from the SRP build style. I’d ideally like to try that before granting teams the ability to edit the hallways themselves.

idk if this changed but sports teams did have a channel w threads for it (at least until august when i left), some floors never got to a mutual agreement of what should be in the common rooms, some didn't say anything and some got it approved but were never assigned builders!

as for the og suggestion itself, there is a huge negative side bc like infi said, not a lot of ppl are very good or consistent w the srp building style which might leave some places looking VERY fugly no shade no personal attacks to ppl who cant build im not very good either

so like if we don't implement this, what can be improved instead? player communication wow haha surprise! Seriously, those old threads should be revived and builders should be actually assigned to build them. Again, like I said, some of the floors do have specific plans for what should be in the lounge rooms, but these plans were never done because builders were not assigned to them or made aware of these requests at all (pls tippie)

But also in a sense, i do really miss the times we had team housings bc of the freedom we had with the houses and it was just really nice to have a little street for the teams like you HAD to be there oyou just had to so like +1 honestly, it just needs limits or builders' help when actually building the stuff

ALSO ADDING ^^^^^^ fred's proposed middle ground is wonderful can we at least have that haha no shade no personal attacks no nothing like that thanks

This is not a 'no offense' situation to those who moderate or build on SRP, it's factually opinionated;

The actual change in builds on Minecraft being accessible by, even the captains, will cave in sentiment, and it can also provide nostalgia. Just imagine Mitsuta Isonokami gets attacked by a bomb of eggshells;

[!]
Bobcat cheer. . .
Broken eggshells.
A Spartan victim.
...or something to that degree, in the corridor. We can't actively do things sentimentally like that unless moderators or builders are present. My team's corridor had a bed outside of it from something that happened for a long time because it wasn't interfered with or changed until it was eventually removed. Actively, in the case of this authoritative change, all of our teams will benefit.

One thing I dislike about the way Fred has worded this; 'smaller teams' seems a little insulting, even though he's factually correct about there being less numbers in some teams. Not that it matters too much, but if it's possible, I'd appreciate if all teams could have the same size. Maybe.

I understand; you want to retain the SRP build style and keep your community team active. I'm all for the latter part of that, we need it. But, if we're only decorating one large room for teams, doesn't it add character? The hallways, hopefully, wouldn't be cluttered with builds. The simplicity similar to the current hallways are fine.

PROSCONS
1. Roleplay opportunity
2. Dorms personality
3. Dorms disownment issues
Fred's relevant points for server benefit.
Of course, this would mean editing the current regions and possibly adding a floor to the current dorms to fit every team.
Time taken to implement all region changes.
Captains would 'own' this region.
Efficiency would be increased as Captains would have access to the region of the floor (interior).
With the use of elevators to hop from floor to floor and a door to enter each (under the captain's ownership), I think this would be wonderful.
Usage of elevators during combat seems to be unfair. Maybe add stairs + elevator??
...as it's each team's choice what is built with the space given.
Creative output available for teams with the interior space being widened to floors.
Saying there’s a “lack of builders” isn’t really fair considering the dorms have been around for over a year and not once have I been asked to edit any aspect of the dorms and I’m pretty sure other builders can say the same thing.
This change will discredit the potential effort of builder community team.

Exterior would have to be managed by SRP builders, this includes the courtyard and corridors (?)

A counter suggestion...
Infi's counter-suggestion may help all teams with exterior changes

As you can tell, I'm very passionate about this suggestion because I'm on a team, and also a lore-team member, so the little things mean a lot in my eyes. Maybe it won't for certain people such as builders who's volunteering work is to ensure SRP retains its own definition, in a builder's sense.

Please do consider a change if anything, even if it means Fred's resolve idea is the only thing accepted in this suggestion. Would help us a lot. I'm sure a meeting (captains only) is beneficial too in order to debate the future of the dorms, if it's reasonable for staff to see the future of them.

Thanks

Alot of people complained about dorms, and that's a fact. Keeping everything in the same style is not possible, and that's also a fact. Also, there's nothing do to with the style, as dorms hallways are completely empty.

Considering these facts, I'm giving huge +1 for suggestion.

I do understand your point and I do not want to discredit builders for their incredible jobs. There is an existing channel for build requests (mostly common rooms and not really rivarly changes), which I am not so familiar with, but I understood from other players it can be quite complicated to get something built (lots of back and forth between players / captains / faction lead / buiders ).

For your quarrel, I completely agree with the fact exteriors should remain realistic and fit the SRP build standards. With this suggestion, I'm suggesting that only the floor's interiors may be changed by the team, but any outdoors changed must be done by an official builder. Also, builders could be contacted to help with indoors builds and staff could monitor the builds from time to time to make sure it's not complete chaos.

Only the indoors part of the dorm floor could be edited by the players.

T B H. Putting in "build requests" is just adding more jobs onto other people that, in the end, won't get completed. We've seen this done in other ways i.e. FRAT/SORO, TEAM HOUSING, SHOPS & so on.

It is TEN TIMES easier to let the players customise their character's living spaces than wait around for a staff member to do it for them - because they simply don't have the time to KEEP UP with things like that, especially when they can be as minute as a sign.

All build requests do in the long run is create a backlog of the entire process, I don't understand why the build plugin cannot just be edited to be suitable for the teams to be able to customise an area that is "dedicated" or meant to be "owned by them", it all just seems rather contradictory to say the spaces are designated for teams yet they lack the very thing that actually makes them customisable to the teams and characters, to begin with. I understand the whole "need to keep things consistent", but there are ways around that. Enable players to customise their spaces in the exact same way team houses were, it's just a case of setting up the plugins- which I understand may take a while, though in the long run, the backlog of "build requests" that, in reality, like I previously said, NEVER get done.

As long as they can edit the inside, the exterior building will remain on-theme with the rest of SRP builds.
