There is no clear memory, not really. Fragments. Dim corridors. Closed doors. Eyes that watched too closely. Hands that gripped too tightly. It was supposed to be five years of memory, but they were stretched over six month. Someone tore most of the film out. Maybe we should be glad that the names of those places are not remembers, surely not one with that man. It wasn't supposed to be this way, it was supposed to keep them safe.
We were allowed back home.
Isaac was already Isaac, towering, controlling, the kind of boy who knew how to teach a lesson when the world didn't bow for him. Ash was small, timid, quiet as snowfall, always trailing behind like she was afrai'd he'd disappear if she let go. Mother and father were distant shaped in the background, they changed in those five years. How did father and mother meet? Business, it was love at first sight. A Japanese man coming to Wales and somehow it became a family. At first they weren't built for parenthood, but they had the children anyway. Somehow it costed them Ash's first steps. He was mama's boy when he was allowed to return.
Father was promoted.
They crossed to the mainland of Japan and all the friends he had built crumbled behind him in Wales. They were sent away over an ocean to Karakura, all three of them sharing an apartment in a foreign place that was half home. Their father was Japanese, their mother Welsh and he spoke both their language, but neither felt like his.
