What position are you applying for (Maiden or Priest)?
I am applying for the position of priest!
What is your motivation for applying?
I’ve walked a handful of paths on SRP, each marked by my love for not only what these factions and clubs offered, but for the server itself. From EMS, to Sports, to Reporter, to getting involved with clubs and meeting so many new people and characters I adore roleplaying with - but now, as I grow and move past those first experiences I find myself wishing to continue on with this journey and find a more permanent role I can stick myself to. I’ve experienced the fright of overworking yourself with far too much at once and I’d like to find something to fully place my attention on and dedicate myself to.
⊹₊⟡⋆
Shrine has been a faction I’ve always wanted to work towards joining, but I faced some limitations in the past! With applications rarely opening, the first time I had the chance to apply I was not confident in my ability to play a functioning role in a faction nor even the skill to write an acceptable one. The second time applications came around, I was already in three factions and knew I shouldn’t overwhelm myself with a fourth.
⊹₊⟡⋆
Now? I hold no faction position but instead a plethora of experiences, confidence, and words of glowing praise for this faction from those who’ve had a lovely time at this monastery. No other faction currently consumes my time, and besides from the few clubs I’m in, I hope to be able to dedicate proper time and love here.
⊹₊⟡⋆
Besides my experiences on SRP, I do hold a genuine love for not only the lore of this server but Japanese myth as well. Shinto has been something I’ve spent a rather long while researching, not only for this character but for various others I’ve had the delight of planning and playing. I hold the idea of creating a character truly as accurate to their surroundings and experiences in their country as I’m capable of.
What do you currently know about Shintoism? Are you willing to learn more about it?
As stated before, I’ve done various bits of research on Shinto in the past! There are some wonderful essays, videos, and scholars dedicated to this research that I’ve had a lovely time reviewing.
⊹₊⟡⋆
Shinto - which is often translated to ‘the way of the kami’ - and its values greatly influence Japan’s culture as a whole, while not seen as a religion by most that practice it - even by many Shinto priests IRL - it is moreso seen as a way of life. A heavy emphasis on respect, nature, and purity - from festivals, to weddings, to milestones in childhood, to even the philosophies and morality which much of Japanese culture bases itself on. It plays such an interesting and significant role that I hope to only further my knowledge of.
⊹₊⟡⋆
The kami don’t really conform to Western understandings of gods. I’ve been raised on those ideas, the religions and mythologies I’ve grown up learning about have had a much more set definition and role of deities, characters with set ideas and dramatised stories. From figures in Japanese mythology, to forces of nature, and even to great historical figures. The extent of how kami are defined and viewed is an everchanging definition that becomes an admirable outlook on the role they play.
⊹₊⟡⋆
Izanagi and Izanami | While not the first kami to come into existence, they do play the most well-known significant role, creating not only the island of Japan but also bringing into the world several more kami - including several incredibly important figures such as.. |
Amaterasu-Omikami | Born from the cleansing of Izanagi’s left eye, Amaterasu is arguably the most crucial presence in Shinto. The sun goddess and ruling deity of the Shinto pantheon. She features in several stories and is one of the most well-known kami, even being the kami the Japanese imperial family claims to be descended from. |
Tsukuyomi-no-Mikoto | Washed from Izanagi’s right eye, Tsukuyomi does not often play as obvious a role as many other kami. While he is still important as the god of the moon, and a few contrasting accounts of the roles he plays, he is generally not as active as his older sister and younger brother in the stories most known today. |
Susanoo-no-Mikoto | And as Izanagi washed his nose, out came one of the most tempestuous deities to grace Japanese literature. The god of storm and sea, he offends many as a god but in his banishment displays acts of heroics and good for the people of Japan. |
Inari Ōkami | While likely not as old as the previous kami stated, Inari is still one of the most important kami in Japan. With thousands of shrines dedicated to them, they could surely be considered even more popular than Amaterasu herself to send prayers for good fortune. While mainly seen as a god of foxes and agriculture in literature, they generally grant good fortune and success as a whole. |
⊹₊⟡⋆
I don’t wish to keep this section too long, as while I do have a fair amount of knowledge on Shinto stories, figures, and general ideas - I am sure I will learn the preferred versions and interpretations I may need to know during training.
⊹₊⟡⋆
What I do wish to mention is the research I have placed into properly respecting shrines and Shinto as the regular individual.
⊹₊⟡⋆
I like to keep attention to detail, if I can be as accurate to the behaviours of someone raised in Japan as I can, I try my best to. While I have never visited the country myself and I am sure my actions may be inaccurate in some ways or not as true to fact as I would hope, I do certainly try my best.
⊹₊⟡⋆
Such as, even for the characters that are not as devout as the few I put that full effort for, any character I have that has been raised in Japan has this basic knowledge.
⊹₊⟡⋆
Omairi

Cleansing | Temizu | As you step towards the temizuya, the gentle trickle of running water greets your ears. You take the ladle with your right hand, scoop up some water, and let it pour over your left hand. You switch hands and repeat the process. Switch the ladle once more to your right and allow some water to pool in your left palm, you raise this hand to your lips and rinse your mouth like this. Do not spit back into the temizuya, spit the water out off to the side. You rinse your left hand once more before tilting ladle upwards, allowing any remaining water to trail down and cleanse the tool itself. Then, you may continue on into the shrine. This small cleansing ritual allows you to wash away daily impurities, showing respect to the kami and entering the monastery pure. |
Bowing | Torii Gates | When entering sacred grounds, one should always bow at a Torii gate. Fall into a light bow, do not walk through the centre. That path is for the kami only. Instead, you should walk through the side. You repeat the same process when leaving. |
Prayer | Nirei-nihakushu-ichirei | Approaching the main hall and the offering box itself, you reach into your pockets for a coin. While any amount of money is acceptable, most commonly offered would be the 5-yen coin, as its name is similar to something along the lines of ‘good fortune’ in Japanese. You deposit it into the box before reaching upwards to ring the bell, hopefully to grab the kami’s attention. Immediately after, you fall into a deep bow. Once, then twice, before standing straight once more. You then clap once, then twice, before letting your hands stay joined together as you pray. After you have finished your prayer itself, you fall into a final bow. You should also bow once more in the direction of the main hall before leaving the shrine grounds. |

While my research mainly has pertained to the average devout follower rather than one of an actual shrine worker's duties, I am always willing to learn and place effort into research as to properly portray and act as this role.

Character Full Name:
Settling into the chair before you was a young man of somewhat tall stature, long, but well-filled out limbs settled against the arms of his seat. A polite but almost sleepy smile spread across his face, a gentle thing that matched the soft feeling that surrounded every movement. “My name is Chae Seo-jun. It’s a pleasure to meet you.” His voice may not have been exactly quiet, but it did have a sort of almost airy quality to it.
Last name then first name format used! His first name would be Seo-jun, last name Chae.
Character Title:
His head lulled to one side.. “Mister, please.”
Character Age:
Warm brown eyes trailed to one side, fixed on nothing in particular. “I am twenty-three years old. I will turn twenty-four in October.” What an accursed month…
Character Marital Status:
His gaze trailed back to your face, slowly shaking his head. “I am not married.”
Character Nationality:
“While I was born in Korea and can claim no ethnic relation to this country, I’ve grown up in Japan and since chosen to become a Japanese citizen.” The most he’d spoken during this entire interview .. Wow!
Degree/Certifications (If applicable):
Reaching into his bag, the man pulled a folded notecard from a secure pocket. Unfolding it revealed a small resume! Organised and clean, his signature in Hangul at the bottom.

. . . and that was . . . all? How simple.
Backstory:
Dark hair fell across his face, brushing against pale cheeks as his head fell forward, a quiet hum escaping his throat. “There is nothing much to tell.” Nothing sorrowful plagued his voice as he continued on, only detached statement. “I moved to Kyoto, Japan from .. somewhere in Korea when I was quite young. CHARACTER KNOWLEDGE / SITUATIONS
˚₊‧꒰ა ☆ ໒꒱ ‧₊˚
How does your character act around shrine grounds? How do they interact with guests and other staff?
A quiet, almost sleepy presence that drifted across shrine grounds with near silence. While polite to those around him, an unintentional air of emotional distance takes that idea of friendship nearly out of grasp, taunting with a tug of its hand upon that string. While he may appear far more interested in his broom and the dust on the stairs than any sort of conversation, there is no malice found in this action.
⊹₊⟡⋆
Simply bowing with a short welcome in that careful tone of his, he stands at attention for few moments to gather if he is required, making clear to be of use for any guest if needed. Yet, if not called for, he moves onto the next task. Always available, but never unbusy.
⊹₊⟡⋆
A listening ear is directed towards anyone, whether guest or fellow worker. Found in prayer, in fields, folding towels, or other quiet jobs where he may contemplate in silence - you are never unwelcome to join him, in these dreamlike moments.
You see a guest jumping around the roofs of the building and overall disrespecting shrine grounds, how would your character handle it?
A clear frown marred the usually so neutral face, lips that rarely opened unless required so snapped as that once airy voice became almost hurricane-like in its asperity. “Do not show such disrespect to the kami and these sacred grounds with this behaviour.” Brown eyes narrowed .. the quiet swish of robes as he stepped forward, arms crossed over his chest. With the sudden shift in mood, perhaps the once languid seeming man became a much more imposing figure, bringing slumped shoulders to full, straightened height. “Please do not continue to climb the buildings, they are certainly not for that.” .. His voice fell fractionally gentler, perhaps catching himself once more in control. “If you require such stimulation or feel the need to get energy out, there is forest–” The man made a slow gesture towards the trees below the cliffside– “with plenty of trees to climb and caves to explore.”
Why does your character want to become a shrine maiden/priest? What do they wish to achieve?
Being a priest has always been noted as a sort of duty, destiny for Seo-jun to follow. To give back to these gods, people, communities that had welcomed him and guided his ideals throughout childhood. He has no greater wish than to simply work as a moving cog in the machine, no strong desire to grow further than his role. Perhaps that could be considered a flaw, the lack of ambition to be anything more. Perhaps one could see it as being humble and content with what life hands to him. Yet, it is all left to interpretation, isn’t it?
⊹₊⟡⋆
To grant that same peace, that relief in a journey of torment that childhood seems to adore putting so many through, to some other struggling kid or individual. He may be unsociable, awkward even, but he is not unkind. He hopes to never be unkind.
What are the core values of your character?
RESPECT
You should remember that which came before you, that which will come after you. You should remember what others do for you and what you do in return. You should remember that true connection is hardly ever built on harsh words and brash actions. That nothing good or right comes from scorning that which is carved into the world.
⊹₊⟡⋆
FAITH
There is nothing more comforting than believing whole-heartedly that there is something there. If not for you, then the world at least. Something divine and sure, a force of nature unchallenged, the understanding of how to show your appreciation for their gifts, their generosity, their contributions to the workings of the world.
⊹₊⟡⋆
ROUTINE
In one year from now, you will be brushing those stairs, in two, you will continue, in five, you will be doing just the same. As sunlight drifts across the uneven stone grounds and cherry blossoms fall to green, then to bare, as you begin to brush snow away instead of dirt, you know that many would consider you boring for the joy you find in this, you do not seem to care.
⊹₊⟡⋆
PEACE
Constantly you wonder, if there is any greater gift to the world than moments like these. If there is anything one should work any harder to achieve, to seek to bring into their life. There is no need for drama of any sort, when one may find their happiest moments with fingers gently brushing along the surface of calm water with only the song of breeze drifting through leaves to join you.

Soon after, I landed in a children’s home where I spent the rest of my childhood. I found family of sorts there, and in the shrines across Kyoto, I found peace.” A soft smile followed.
Born to Eun-yoo Chae and an unknown father in Daejoon, Korea, on October 17th, 2002, Seo-jun was hardly expected to lead an exceptional life. While not wealthy, his mother wasn’t poor either, and a standard early childhood was given to his toddler self. Even at the age of three-years-old, as they moved across the sea to Kyoto, Japan, for his mother’s work, nothing significant particularly changed. The environment, yes. The language, certainly. But almost everything else that mattered to his toddler mind? It was as if all that was different to him was the pattern of the woodgrain of his livingroom floor. Struggle was found in his ability to communicate with his peers, but with the young mind so adaptable to language and the assistance of a particularly dedicated babysitter, soon it became as natural to his tongue as his native.
⊹₊⟡⋆
As he hit year 6 of his life, Seo-jun soon found himself clutching a backpack on the doorstep of a children’s home - or as you might know them as, an orphanage - not afraid particularly. The gravity of the situation did not settle in his drifting mind. He could not process the shaking hands of his mother, driven to exhaustion and an urge to rid herself of the burden which dug through her finances, energy, and time. All that was taken in that moment was the gentle brush of lips against his forehead, like any other time she’d left him to wander a park or playground. Yet she did not return, instead, he was carefully led inside by a young woman with a lovely smile and soft voice he never ended up learning the name of - some volunteer of sorts, likely.
⊹₊⟡⋆
Days, months, years passed. Sorrow was had, anger was felt. Feelings were written out in edgy, dramatic poetry and stabbed out in diary entries as one progressed from kid, to preteen, to teenager. Rage softened to acceptance, bitterness to indifference. Love was found elsewhere, family was found elsewhere in the people, friends, siblings he found with others in such similar positions. Test scores did not come back perfect, skin was not exceptionally clear, nor did any sort of miracle lead to a spectacularly attractive youth. Calm was found in common visits to the shrines that decorated the historical city. Quiet joy, routine was found in the rules and prayers.
⊹₊⟡⋆
Devout, consistent, Seo-jun was called by peers and adults that watched him trail off to shrines, joining him on occasion. Not longing, but understanding was seen in brown eyes that traced the movements of priests and maidens carefully. It was of no surprise the path he chose to take in career almost immediately, there was no question of his desire, faith, or purpose. Growing from a gangly teen to a certainly not ugly young man, there was no surprise in his chosen path.
⊹₊⟡⋆
As he spent time volunteering where he could, helping in whatever needed, educating himself with the rules and art of Shinto - not one assignment left undone, not one area he allowed himself to fall in his studies. Socially, he may have never been quite so good at, but the peace he found in the isolation of his work was unmatched, no idea of parties, drinking with friends, or the reckless abandonment few he knew sometimes fell into in their years could compete with that tranquility. Friendships were certainly lost with this disinterest, unknowingly discarded, abandoned.
⊹₊⟡⋆
But this was his purpose, was it not?
