What position are you applying for (Maiden or Priest)?
I’m applying for the Maiden position.
What is your motivation for applying?
My motivation for applying to the Shrine faction is that, personally, I am always looking to explore new roleplay experiences. I’ve been on the server for 6 years now, originally joining in 2020. Within that time, I’ve participated in a variety of different factions along with different types of roleplay styles. I honestly can’t imagine where I’d be roleplay-wise without the factions because, at the end of the day, they’ve helped me develop my skills and gain a better grasp on detailrp.
The shrine particularly interests me because it offers a calm and peaceful atmosphere, which is different from my jock character, where every day is another rivalry situation. I hope to be accepted because I want to find more ways to interact with the community, perhaps make more friends, and proceed to expand my horizon of roleplay, and knowing there’s the possibility of learning more about Shintoism is the cherry on top. I never really looked into the religion until recently, and I can say I’ve become hooked.
What do you currently know about Shintoism? Are you willing to learn more about it?
I currently know only a section of Shintoism, but since applying to the faction, I’ve become intrigued by everything this religion has to offer, so yes, PLEASE teach me more!!
Shintoism - ‘The Way of the Gods’ ;
Kami - These are spirits, even though the translation would be a god, they’re simply just spirits. Kami are spirits of practically anything, from natural phenomena to the spirits of ancestors who have passed away. Kami can be seen as god-like (Kami of the moon, Tsukuyomi-no-mikto), but it also goes beyond that point, into nature itself. ➜ There’s even a kami of hair!
Purity - The purpose is to remove any bad omens. Some of the bad omens could stem from Kegare (uncleanness), examples could be disease, or simply put, filth. Tsumi (transgression), this is more in the sense of actions like crime or murder.
In Shinto, impurity is only temporary and can be cleaned off someone.
❀‘Temizu’ - This purification is most used at shrines; there’s usually a basin of water; you’re expected to wash your left hand, then right, then rinse out your mouth with the water.
❀‘Misogi’ - Purification where some may bathe in the ocean or waterfalls.
❀‘Shubatsu’ - This purification is practiced at sumo matches, sprinkling salt around the ring.
❀‘Haraigushi’ - Purification with a ritual wand, which is waved over things.
Shinto is the practice of appreciating the world itself. Previously, I mentioned Kami are spirits of almost everything. At the heart of a Shinto Shrine, there is the go-shintai, which is one of the many objects where Kami live, but it isn’t the Kami itself (ritual object).
Ways of practice:
Visiting shrines - This is a place for the public to pray, engage in rituals, seek blessings, or often give offerings. After purification, bowing before entering the torii gate, people will offer a coin and ring a bell at the main hall. This is referred to as the Haiden; it’s the worship hall that’s open to the public, unlike the Honden, which is closed off.
Purification- As I’ve mentioned previously, this is a major part of the Shinto religion; it’s customary to cleanse oneself before interacting with kami.
Festivals ‘Matsuri’ - These are festivals hosted to celebrate kami along with seasonal events.
Sacred places -
Shrines - These structures could be found almost anywhere; they range from gigantic buildings to simple roadside, forest, or household shrines.
Torii Gates - Landmarks indicate the entrance to a shrine; they’re seen as a sacred gateway from the outside world.
Omikuji - These are fortune slips people receive after making a donation. The slip could either include a good or a bad fortune. Typically, when someone gets a bad slip, they tie it somewhere at the shrine to symbolize leaving the bag of fortune behind.
IC INFORMATION
Character Full Name:
The woman shifted awkwardly in her seat, her head hung low, staring at the Shrine worker in front of her through long dark lashes. Kang took in a long inhale, holding it, and exhaling. ‘It’s Kang Eun-Hee’ Her voice was soft and almost delicate; she didn’t exaggerate her voice, or herself, let alone. Lifting her head up from its previous position, her eyes finally met the workers. Dropping her hands to sit in her lap, one hand over the other, picking at her cuticles idly. Raising her hand with her index finger pointed- as if she had to wait to speak. ‘Kang is my surname, I don’t know if that’s something of importance…’ Kang found herself smiling softly.
Character Title:
Pushing out her cheeks, her eyes lidded as she pondered. What was she pondering? Who knows. Letting her face melt from the pufferfish replica, instead, a soft, genuine smile curled the corners of her lips. “Honestly, I’ve never been asked this before…” Kissing her teeth, Eun-Hee gave a small shrug. ‘Miss Kang works just fine.’ Clasping her hands, she rested them over her lap.
Character Age:
Eun-Hee’s eyes widened, her eyes darted left and right for a moment before ushering them in closer… Leaning over the table, she pressed her hand beside her lips, a very hush hush moment. ‘I’m thirty years old.’ Plopping back into her seat, pressing her lips together, her arms rested in a ‘glowing’ shrug, like she expected someone to be shocked she was 30 and not 24. There was a sense of awkward glam to the woman; she had the maturity of her age but still found a way to act like a bratty child at times. Cheesing, she wafted her hand back and forth. "I'm very into skincare." With her fingertips she very gently tapped them against her glowing skin.
Character Marital Status:
Kang’s face melted into a frown, peaking down at her very… lonely wedding ring finger. Her eyes drifted back up, and she brought that same hand in front of her to show… NOTHING! ‘There’s no Mr. in the picture, it’s fine though who even cares..!’ Turning her head off to the side, she hid the embarrassment that contoured her face. Puffing out her lips, crossing her arms, her head creaked back to the shrine worker like it was their fault she was single.
Character Nationality:
Tapping her nails against her thigh, she shifted again, this time to fix her posture. ‘I’m Korean,’ Pausing, she pondered if adding more was truly needed. Pressing her elbow on the table, her cheek propped in her palm, her lips rested in a smug smile. ‘I was born and raised in South Korea.’
Degree/Certifications (If applicable):
Scrunching her face, Kang paused, letting her eyes roll off to the side, the thought looooong and hard. ‘Technically none, but I did get a certificate when I lived in Chubu. I worked at the shrine there.’ So, clearly, pressure makes her dumb? For a moment, her gaze drifted to her leg. To her surprise, that same leg bounced up and down from the sheer anxiousness that was, also dripping down her back. Oh yes, she forgot her portable fan and found herself sweating bullets.
Backstory
Tapping her index finger against pursed lips, tilting her head to the side, she thought deeper into the question. ‘I mean, it’s nothing too special.’ Scrunching her face, her hand dropped onto the table in front of her, tapping her nails idly. ‘I was born and raised in Korea, my dad was a jerk…’ Huffing, rolling her eyes. ‘I ended up moving to Chubu with my younger brother… So on and so forth…’
(Just imagine like... an interrogation table.)
CHARACTER KNOWLEDGE / SITUATIONS
How does your character act around shrine grounds? How do they interact with guests and other staff?
Eun-Hee has always been a quiet person with the demeanor of someone who would be seen as intimidating or reserved. She treats people like they’re delicate in some ways, scared that they’ll break within her hands. She walks with her eyes on the ground, making sure she doesn’t trip and make a fool of herself, which is a usual thing. She usually keeps to herself, gazing at others wishing she could be as naturally talkative, but she’s the kind of person that speaks when spoken to; until then, she remains in her own little ‘La La land.’ Although once you initiate a conversation, the girl doesn’t stop talking, she loves conversing over interests. Eun-Hee would treat visitors with positivity, grace, and patience. With staff, she’s the kind of co-worker who will refill your coffee cup when she gets up to get more, while in passing, she’ll offer a warm smile with a bow
You see a guest jumping around the roofs of the building and overall disrespecting shrine grounds, how would your character handle it?
Eun-Hee would approach the situation keeping calm and staying respectful to maintain the peace. She’d call for the individual and politely ask them to come down, reminding them that the shrine grounds weren’t a place to play ‘Three Little Monkey’s.’ She’d go on to explain that climbing on the buildings could damage the shrine or potentially result in injury.
If the individual complied, Eun-Hee would thank them and wish them farewell. However, if they continued to be disruptive, she’d avoid direct confrontation and instead notify another worker if available; otherwise, in the worst-case scenario, she’d deal with the individual by trying to reason with them.
Why does your character want to become a shrine maiden/priest? What do they wish to achieve?
'Not for recognition, but to serve as a guardian of harmony.'
Eun-Hee was born to a mother and father that never offered her their time. Once she grew old enough, she moved to Chubu, a young Korean woman learning Japanese from her younger brother. As a child she was referred to as 귀신, meaning ghost, this was due to the fact of her always looming around watching those around her. In Chubu her brother Jun-Seo opened her eyes to Shintoism, he originally moved there to research more into the Japanese culture, did I mention they're half siblings? Almost instantly Eun-Hee was captivated with Shrines, she felt warmth knowing the Maidens and Priests work to provide guidance to others.
Eun-Hee wants to be a maiden because she knows that with the right amount of effort, she can help those around her.
What are the core values of your character? (OPTIONAL - MORE INFO IN FAQ)
Harmony: Our world has a delicate balance, one that should be treated as so. Harmony is the conscious effort to continue to respect and understand even with the hardship's life may throw at you.
Respect: Respect is the foundation to all meaningful relationships; connections are built on the thought that what you offer is what's given in return.
Compassion: Recognize the emotions those around you may struggle with.
