✛Αδελφή Σεραφείμα Κομνηνά
Sister Serafima Komnena
(In-game picture to be included at a later time)
The cane belonged to Elder Jeremiah of Saint Nicholas Hermitage on Mount Athos. It was given to her as a keepsake from the holy father during their meeting in Thessaloniki. The cane does not appear to be special in any way, it was likely bought from a shop. She has it with her always, it is practically an extension of her right arm.
Rosary Belt
A typical rosary belt worn by some orders of Catholic monastics. It was acquired by Sera when she went on a pilgrimage with her father in Jerusalem. She had not known its significance back then. The beads and crucifix are made out of olive wood from the Garden of Gethsemane. The rosary hang beside her as a reminder of the intercessions of God’s Holy Mother.
Silver Crucifix
Given by Sister Teresa Keating after Sera had made her vows to become a nun. It is intricately made with inscriptions of her order. The image of the Crucifixion on this piece is particularly moving, almost lifelike.
Holy Bible
Also given to her by Sister Teresa after Sera made her vows. The book is ornate with gold decorations, it’s quite heavy, it has been used as a blunt object for hitting and a shield. Apart from those functions, Sera reads it every day.
Wooden Carved Cross
Made by the hands of Protopresbyter Makarios Komnenos, passed down through generations within the family. Worn inside Sera’s clothing, the cross has been carved to display the Greek letters “ΙΣ ΧΣ ΝΙΚΑ” meaning “Jesus Christ Conquers”, which is a reference to the Resurrection, His victory/conquest over death.
Milk
Sera’s favourite drink. She can often be spotted holding a carton of milk, sipping it constantly. When nervous, she would gulp down the whole thing.
Biography:
Serafima Komnena was born in the Great City of Constantinople (Istanbul), Turkey, on the 25th of March, 2005, in the Fener district, a traditionally Greek neighbourhood which was midway up the Golden Horn. An only child, her parents were pious Orthodox Christians who were a part of the dwindling Greek community in the city. The origins of her ancestry can be traced back to Greece, more specifically the region of Western Macedonia, in the town of Komnena, Kozani region. Her ancestors moved from Komnena to Athens after the Greek War of Independence (1821-1829). Her great-grandparents then moved to Constantinople in 1860, seeking a better life, or so they claimed. In reality, they were criminals on the run from the Greek government, there had been a nationwide manhunt for their alleged tax evasion (over 300 thousand drachmae!!!). By their cunning , they were able to sneak on a ferry bound from Athens to Constantinople. With their ill-gotten wealth, they created a false identity, claiming their lineage to be from Byzantine nobility, a branch of the Komnenos dynasty, who ruled Constantinople during the 11th to 12th centuries. Hence the last name “Komnenos/Komnena”, somehow, no one suspected the lie… This all occurred when Constantinople (then Konstantiniyye) was still the capital of the Ottoman Empire.
The great-grandparents eventually gave birth to a son and named him Isaac, they mysteriously disappeared about 2 weeks after the birth of the child. Some say that the child was an accident, and that the couple had taken on another identity and fled to Anatolia, others say they had been spotted boozing on the walls above the Sea of Marmara at night, before tumbling down onto the rocks and then into the water by accident. Whatever the case, the boy was found at their home and taken in by a kind priest at the Ecumenical Patriarchate, he did not know the boy’s name but only his family’s due to a pendant the boy had, so he named little Isaac Makarios and baptised him a few weeks later. Unlike his devious parents, Makarios Komnenos grew up to be a righteous man of God, which can be attributed to his stepfather, the priest who had adopted him, and the environment at the Patriarchate. Eventually, Makarios got married and gave birth to 3 daughters and 2 sons, a few years later, he was ordained to the priesthood, and this started a precedent where the male family lineage would all become priests.
the name of the girl that came to be Serafima was given by her grandfather, in honour of the Saint celebrated on her birthday, Saint Seraphim of Vyritsa (1866-1949), as well as the namesake of that Saint, which was Saint Seraphim of Sarov (1754-1833). Sera was baptised 40 days after her birth, according to the traditions and rites of the Eastern Orthodox Church, by her uncle, who was also a clergyman. The baptism took place at the Holy Church of Saint Demetrius the Myrrhbearer.
She spent most of her childhood in Turkey and visited Greece very often with her father, the Very Reverend Lazarus Komnenos. Her time in Turkey can be described as isolated, she was homeschooled by her mother and her circle of friends were all from the local Greek community, hence she has little to no knowledge at all about the Turkish culture and language. While in Greece, due to her father’s role in the church and her personal interests, she frequented churches and monasteries and strongly desired the veneration of relics and holy places. Her father often paid visits to Holy Mount Athos, the centre of Orthodox Christian Monasticism.
On an occasion of his visit in 2016, he encountered a holy monk at one of the sketes attached to the Stavronikita Monastery. He requested confession with the holy elder, and during the confession, the elder revealed to him that he was destined to become a preacher for the Eastern Orthodox Church in Japan, and that his daughter would become a monastic, initially outside the Church but then she would repent and return.
In late 2016, Sera’s mother fell asleep in the Lord, she was diagnosed with stomach cancer 4 years prior. A decision was made by her father, that they would obey what the holy elder had said and move to Japan. Upon their arrival, they were welcomed by His Eminence Daniel Nushiro, the Archbishop of Tokyo and Metropolitan of All Japan at the time. A few months after, Sera’s father was designated by the Archbishop to become a preacher and serve as a parish priest at the local church in Oshima, due to financial complications, it was decided that they would take up residence in the city of Karakura. However, her father would be away most of the time for his assignments, while Sera was occupied with her studies.
Personality/Behaviour:Typically reserved and well-mannered as befitting of a Constantinopolitan lady. Sera’s accent and style of speech makes her sound like an old woman sometimes. She usually shy away from speaking with strangers unless approached first. In conversations she is usually reserved. Sera has an aversion to technology, she uses an old flip phone, drives a manual car.
When faced with behaviour that wrongs her, she would be very judgmental and make mocking/backhanded compliments, sometimes to her own detriment. Often escalating to physical altercations, surprisingly, she has won most of them, at the cost of a black eye or two, the most severe being two broken ribs and a dislocated knee.
Pride and hypocrisy:
General judgements on people who do not fit her image of “normal”, based on their choices of clothing, hair dye, makeup. She knows that its wrong, but still does it anyway.
Sera would often criticise or judge certain members of her order for their relationship status. She prides herself on being the only one who upholds the entirety of the monastic vows. In secret, perhaps she also desires the affections of a companion.
Aversion to political activism of the church:
Sera considers the political activism efforts of the church to be misplaced. She rarely participates in the protests and marches organised by them.
“Christ Himself said that we should all be gentle as doves but as wise as serpents. This is true wisdom, everything we do, we do with discernment. Does it really profit a monastic to be concerned with affairs of the world and to lose their silence? How shall your soul be saved if you are distracted by worldly vanities?”
Odd behaviours that may be observed occasionally:
Sitting, sleeping in dumpsters.
Sleep by sitting upright in a chair.
Locking herself up in her cell for days never to emerge once.
Shouting incoherent nonsense at random people.
Somersaults inside the church.
Throwing fish at people because she is a “fisher of men”.
Dropkicking ATM machines.
Personal life:Sera practices the routine that of a typical eastern monastic. Waking up at early hours of the morning before sunrise to read prayers. When unoccupied, she reads the prayers of the hours throughout the day. She also dabbles in Hesychasm or “Divine Quietness”. It is a practice of the contemplation of God and constant repeat of the Jesus prayer “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy upon me the sinner.”
Other than the Scriptures, spiritual books, and occasionally fictional stories, Sera also reads the news. She has an avid interest in the cinema, particularly films shot on 35mm.
As a part of her “diakonima” or daily work, she dedicates time to feeding the homeless and helping new students at the high school, particularly the younger ones. She always has snacks and fruits to give away.
Threats from organised crime:
After witnessing an attempted murder in the sewers and assisting with the victim’s escape, Sera landed herself in a bad place with a group of criminals. Her disposition of mockery and antagonism has also played a role in her endangerment.
Favourite Saints:
Relationships:
Archimandrite Lazarus Komnenos: Her father, a real man’s man according to Sera, unfortunately he smokes like a chimney. His life experiences molded him into a true ascetic. The father and daughter shared a strong bond that had recently been estranged due to Sera’s decision to become a nun within the “Discipuli Lux Divina'' sect, in Sera’s own defence, the sect is the only organised Christian community within Karakura, so it couldn't have been helped.
Maynard Oliver: Sera’s confidant and close friend. They met at the basement inside the Karakura Church, both curious about the statue that stood there. They would often meet in a treehouse inside the forest, exchanging their writings. She is very fond of him, secretly, perhaps even smitten. She has thought about telling him but never got the guts to do it.
Sr. Teresa Keating: One of her true friends, Sera and Teresa first met in a cooking class at the high school. The two bonded very quickly over their shared faith in God. After befriending Teresa, Sera soon decided to join her order of nuns. The two could often be spotted together running around town. They organise church events together and often conduct other unusual activities. Although they share the same vows, their personalities are very much different. Sera often feels disappointed over the life decisions of Teresa. Still, the two are very close.
Archbishop Alois Tullybellton: The leader of the sect of Christians in Karakura. “May Saint Nicholas guide my hands.” This prayer was uttered by Sera before she brutally KO’ed him in the dojo of the Shinto Shrine. She respects Alois out of courtesy, often addressing him sarcastically as “Your Eminence”, and asking to kiss his hand. Many of the Archbishop’s decisions trouble Sera very much, according to her, theirs is nothing one can do, she silently accepts them with disapproval.
Sr. Akiko Izanami: Akiko and Sera met each other while fishing by the lake in the forest, they always got on well with each other. Eventually, both of them decided to become nuns, during the early days of the sisterhood in Karakura, when it initially had only two nuns, Sisters Arima and Teresa.
Zeljko D. Volkonsky: An altar server of the church by day, and gang member by night. These two shared a close relationship being both from the Balkans and of Orthodox lineage. Perhaps they would have gotten married if Sera weren’t a nun. Zeljko vanished without a trace one day. Like how she would often put it when something goes missing: “It vanished like a fart in the wind.” She would pray for him every single day.
Ataru Moroboshi: The very first friend she had made at the high school. Ataru had a special place in her heart, he protected her from bullies and other shady individuals. He mysteriously disappeared one day and was never to be found again. It is unknown what had happened to him, if he is even alive at all. This event, in addition to other factors, planted a seed in her mind that she would eventually be called to dedicate her whole life to prayer and worship of God.
Saint Gabriel the Confessor and Fool for Christ: A Saint of the Church which Sera shares a close bond with, in her distress she would ask for his prayers and intercessions. “It was in a dream, I saw an old man clad in white, his robes shimmered with a glorious light, a hood covered his forehead, in the middle of it was the Cross of our Lord. Grasped in his left hand, a staff of solid gold, and in his right, the most beautiful censer I have ever seen, the fragrance was that of the Garden of Eden, I am sure of it. He called out my name, told me to come closer and then embraced me. In that moment, I felt as if all my burdens and worries were whisked away, he looked at me again, smiled, and faded away.” She has supposedly seen him in dreams and visions, and even conversed with him. An icon of Saint Gabriel hangs in her cell, she has claimed that the expression of the Saint changes sometimes.
