. ᨳଓ Backstory — ᨳଓ .
Lauren Brookes was born in what seemed to be the perfect family. Her father was a well-known dentist and surgeon, and her mother was a successful real estate agent. They lived in a big and beautiful home, almost close to a mansion. The family always put on fake smiles in public, and never let anyone see the cracks behind closed doors.

At home, Lauren was expected to be perfect. She had to have the perfect outfit, the perfect diet, perfect grades, the perfect face and body – and every mistake she made was criticized and scolded. Her parents believed that they were perfect themselves; therefore their daughter had to be as well. However, Lauren could not be perfect, because nobody was perfect. Because of Lauren’s ineliminable flaws, she believed that embarrassment and failure were the worst things a person could experience, so she always tried to avoid it. Despite the intense pressure of her parents and everything else around her, Lauren managed to keep some semblance of elegance for a little while.

When Lauren was fourteen years old, her parents’ marriage collapsed in a spectacular fashion. Months of screaming matches between the whole family ended one rainy evening as Lauren’s father was driving her home from school after drinking. He had lost control of the car in his drunken haze. Lauren survived the crash with a severely injured collarbone and a giant gash across her shoulder, but her father and the people in the other car all died at the scene. The investigators had ruled the crash as an accident, but Lauren carried crushing guilt for years because she and her father had argued on the way to school that morning.

After his death, Lauren’s mother spiraled into depression and emotional instability. Some days she barely spoke, while other days she reminded Lauren that it was her fault for her father’s death. By sixteen, Lauren was cooking meals, managing bills, and taking care of the house while trying to manage her school social life and trying to keep her grades up. She learned to rely on herself because she felt there was no one else she could count on when she needed it most.

Instead of becoming withdrawn, Lauren rebuilt herself into someone approachable yet collected and calm. She became confident, elegant, and optimistic. On the outside, she seemed almost perfect, as she had been raised to pretend to be. However, what very few people noticed was that her cheerful, sometimes chaotic energy often appeared when she was overwhelmed and exhausted. If conversations became too emotional, she’d try to crack a joke and steer clear of serious confrontation. If life felt out of control, she’d throw herself into spontaneous adventures, hyper events, or impulsive plans that just made her feel alive to drown out the draining sound of her own head. She despised silence because it gave her too much room to think.

When her mother died, Lauren needed a new start. Another fight led to another tragic accident on the road, and again Lauren felt it was her fault. She left everything behind that day; she needed a new start. She moved to Karakura, Japan, and started a whole new life. Although she hasn’t been there long and doesn’t have many friends, she’s going to adapt to the new environment and hopefully thrive like she once believed she could.
