What position are you applying for (Maiden or Priest)?
Maiden
What is your motivation for applying?
Becoming a shrine maiden would open a great amount of opportunities, a change in perspective writing, a social and perhaps fun challenge; all this is enough motivation for me to apply. If I were to go into detail about my motivations for applying for shrine maiden, they would stem from a desire to add variety to my roleplay experiences; adding on to my previous experiences in roleplay. Enhancing my skill levels regarding detailed roleplay whilst also providing different perspectives within other faction roleplay such as being an adult character able to start a family and adopt younger characters. I believe general interactions and the overall writing experience as a character other than a high school student or a silly frog would also be extremely fun and challenging, and especially since I am applying with a blind character.
What do you currently know about Shintoism? Are you willing to learn more about it?
I have a basic understanding about Shintoism, and have done some research for application purposes but I am more than willing to learn more about it, whether it be my own research or through training with fellow shrine maidens and priests.
IC INFORMATION
Character Full Name:
A distinguished young woman would enter, presumably the teahouse of the shrine for her interview; subtly sweeping her white cane in front of her. Upon feeling the gentle tap of her cane against the table of the interviewer, she would raise her gaze, her eyes a milky white color; gentle and soft. An equally gentle smile would pull across the young woman’s face, as she bowed at the waist politely, “greetings,” she would begin with a soft tone, “my name is Mai Lan Tien, with Tien being my given name.”
Character Title:
Standing back up straight before the desk, the young woman would kneel down before the table, cautiously placing her cane and handheld purse to her left side. “Maiden Tien or Miss Tien would work just fine with me.” Tien answered straightforwardly, before adding, “I am applying for the position of Maiden,” finishing off her sentence with a smile.
Character Age:
Tien raised a hand to gently brush her long, curtaining bangs away from her face, attempting to keep a decent amount of eye contact with her interviewer, despite being completely blind. “I am 26 years old,” she placed her hands gently in her lap, overlapping one another.
Character Marital Status:
With a breath, the woman answered simply, and almost solemnly, “I am single.”
Character Nationality:
Tien nodded, reaching to her left side, opening her small handheld purse and pulled out the necessary documentation; her Viet citizenship and her Japanese passport, “I was born and raised on Cu Lao Gieng Island, Viet Nam, but had to move to the capital city due to my disability.” Upon showing the interviewer the documents, she would neatly place them back in her purse.
Degree/Certifications (If applicable):
Tien would nod, replacing her hands in her lap, “I have a bachelors in Japanese Language and Culture from Hanoi University.” Arguably, it would explain her Japanese fluency despite being Vietnamese. “I graduated from Hanoi University in 2021, and took a few years to work to save money; in order to afford my move here.” Tien explained briefly.
Backstory

To start this story, Tien would clear her throat, “as I mentioned before, I was born in Cu Lao Gieng Island in Viet Nam,” she paused, a solemn smile once appearing on the young woman's face as she recalled her childhood memories. “It was a beautiful and tranquil island, full of wondrous works of architecture, rich in history and culture.” Tien would pause, raising a hand to rest on her chest, “I had a handful of siblings, in which we often got into some innocent mischief,” a gentle giggle, “alas some things were just a bit too dangerous for young children at the time.” Tien’s scarred eyes would shut, sighing gently as she quietly relived the memories in her mind, “we were exploring some of the wooded areas of the island, and my siblings and I encountered some wild animals.” The young woman lowered her hands back to her lap, a slight tremble in her voice, “I had the misfortune of being swiped by a big cat and losing sight in both my eyes.” A tear drop would slowly descend the woman's cheek, dripping and landing on the back of her palm.
“Thanks to the ancestors, my older siblings managed to drag me and another that was attacked out of the woods and back into our village, where we were treated.” Tien reached to her left, taking out a handkerchief from the purse, gently dabbing away at her wetted eyes. “After my initial injuries were treated, my family decided to fly me and my father to the capital of Viet Nam, Hanoi, for further treatment.” She explained briefly, folding the handkerchief and replacing it back in her purse before continuing on with some details, “that’s where I learned to read and write with the braille lettering system and utilize my cane for traversing the areas around me,” she said, once again reaching for her side, lifting her white cane to showcase the item.
“While growing up in Hanoi, I was inducted into a martial arts program by my father,” she set her cane back down, Tien continued, “learning to defend myself through physical contact martial arts such as Judo, not that I have needed to use said skills in my life as of yet.” Tien understood that her father was just looking out for her, but she found the skills she learned to be a bit useless. “After primary school, I attended Hanoi University in Hanoi as well,” she paused, “I had been interested in Japan and its culture for a part of my youth and decided to pursue studies regarding the culture.” Tien explained briefly, “not that my parents were very happy with it, given where I was raised.” Tien jested.
“I learned all about Japan’s culture and language, mastering it over the four years that it took for me to earn my bachelors,” she would then gesture to her scarred over eyes and white cane, “based on my peers troubles with learning the written language, I suppose I got the easier way of learning the language through braille rather than writing with a pen.” She explained with a light chuckle, “but I had a lot of fun taking the courses for my bachelor, some of the most memorable years of my life.” Coming towards the end of her story, or rather reaching the present day she would finish off saying, “the first chance I got, I bought a flight ticket to Japan, this island in particular.”
CHARACTER KNOWLEDGE / SITUATIONS
How does your character act around shrine grounds? How do they interact with guests and other staff?
Upon shrine grounds, Tien would find herself acting professional and poise, following each custom taught to her. With patience, she’d take her time to bow properly at each torii gate, paying her respects to the kami. Following polite customs, she’d greet each guest of the shrine with a kindness in her tone and mannerisms; respecting each individual's own beliefs, yet also politely reminding them of the rules of the shrine. Depending on what the guest requests, Tien would assist, dutifully filling each request, whether it be manning the register at the shrine’s gift shops, answering any questions regarding the shrine, offering to serve tea in the tea house, or simply holding a conversation with the guests. Regarding fellow staff members, Tien holds a small expectation of professionalism; though she is not opposed to friendly conversations over tea. She is as kind, patient and respectful to her fellow maidens and priests as she is to guests.
You see a guest jumping around the roofs of the building and overall disrespecting shrine grounds, how would your character handle it?
Tien may be blind, but she is not deaf. Tien’s hearing is quite excellent; she can notice most things happening around her by simply listening. She’d hear the rustling of feet upon roofs, peering her head up towards the roofs of the buildings, or at least the general direction of; and politely ask whoever may be on roofs to come down, and stay down. Likewise with anyone disrespecting the grounds, Tien would calmly remind them of the shrine rules, and if they cannot follow the rules, then they would be asked to leave. Tien may be quiet and kind, but she knows how to stand her ground and be firm with disrespectful guests.
Why does your character want to become a shrine maiden/priest? What do they wish to achieve?
Tien recalls the fruitful years of her university life, learning all about Japan and its culture, including Shintoism and management of the shrines. She has always held an admiration for the religious aspects of Japanese culture, the work that goes into upholding such beautiful buildings and architecture, the beauty of it all; from the gardens to the outfits. Becoming a maiden would be like a dream come true for the young woman. Realistically, a successful career would be anyone’s main goal to achieve. For Tien, a successful career means you’ve learned knowledge or skills outside of the norm, and Tien hopes to achieve these goals as a maiden. After 4 years of university, being a part of the shrine as a maiden would be like experiencing everything Tien’s learned hands-on.
What are the core values of your character? (OPTIONAL - MORE INFO IN FAQ)
Tien holds strong core values that are rooted in standards of respect and honesty. As a blind woman, she wholeheartedly believes everyone should be kind to one another, to help one another when in need and to treat each other as equals. You never know what someone could be going through, and they could be coming to the shine in a silent cry for help. Tien has a strong sense of what’s right and wrong, but she is not the type to enforce her beliefs on others but rather offers an open ear to those in need, offering advice if she were to be requested of it.
