Backstory:

Bruce grew up in a wealthy family as an only child, but he was never interested in the lifestyle, although he was grateful to not be in poverty. His parents are successful business people and philanthropists, due to the demanding nature of that career, his parents hardly made time for him, which led to Bruce feeling more disconnected from his family. Although for his father, his wealth was partially ill-gotten, he began to deal more and more into shady business practices. Bruce was taught good manners and still carries that with him. He became a bit of a rebel, not wanting to conform to his family's expectations. His mother at least tried to connect with him, she would often share her Japanese culture and other facts with him. Due to the increasing paranoia of Bruce’s father, he hired an old colleague of his, a British man named Haymitch Bauer, as a bodyguard for him and his family.

Unfortunately, his mother fell exceedingly ill, and the doctors could not figure out what the problem was initially. Behind the scenes, one of Bruce’s father’s enemies made a move they did not see coming and paid off one of the nurses to discreetly inject a lethal amount of a painkiller into Bruce’s mother’s IV tube. Because of this, the distance between Bruce and his father grew immensely as a result of both of their grief over the loss. His father began to fall further into his work and dark dealings, closing everyone even further off. Bruce’s father would make poor attempts to mend their severed bonds through money, which of course failed. Soon enough, Bruce's father was gone too, and Bruce never knew why, all that was left was ashes. Haymitch was left to pick up the pieces, because (unknown to him until the day of Bruce’s mother’s death) Bruce’s parents named Haymitch the legal guardian of Bruce in the event of something happening to Bruce’s parents.

Haymitch attempted to raise Bruce the only way he knew how, by teaching him how to fight. He wasn’t equipped to be a parent to Bruce, caring for him but not knowing at all how to show it. Haymitch, when he wasn’t reminding Bruce to eat or training him, was often drinking to cope with the pressures of this life he didn’t want. This led to Bruce being an exceedingly lonely and closed off individual, having difficulty finding meaning in his life. This is when his mental health symptoms really came to fruition. Searching for a way out, he began to find himself more in the world of art and poetry, since his parents had large collections of books and other art pieces mainly for the sake of display. This was his way of expressing those complex feelings he couldn't find himself to put into words to speak. This is where the passionate side of him most people never knew of would show itself. The unanswered questions of who killed his parents constantly plagued his mind. Spending most of his days isolated in his large home, Bruce hardly learned what it was like to have friends or any semblance of a normal life. Wandering the empty halls of his home was metaphoric of him exploring the empty halls of his mind. Before he switched to at-home studies, Bruce struggled socially in school and would often get ridiculed for his closed off nature and coming from a wealthy family, a fact he began to resent even more. This damaged his self-confidence, making him feel even more alienated and alone. Bruce didn't care much for school, but he did well in his classes, preferring to bury himself in his work to avoid social interactions. He often wished he was a normal person without the problems and worries he had to deal with.

As he got older, Haymitch offered to let Bruce pick up where his parents left off and take over their business affairs. The idea of this repulsed him as he had later found out his father wasn't the boy scout Bruce idolized. Not only that, but the notion of being tied to a
monotonous work life seemed like hell to Bruce. Deep down he wanted something more. Excitement, connection, a little danger. At the same time, the idea scared him. It was so much different than the life he was used to. He was hesitant, unsure of himself. He wanted to change, but was he ready for it?
