What's the title of your suggestion?: Coach/Sport Supervisor Role

What's your suggestion?:
This was kind of a random thought I had recently, but considering that the sports faction is SUCH a large part of SchoolRP (hosting currently 185 individual members of the server) I feel like there is one part of the faction that doesn't quite add up to realism. I want to propose a possible new role that would be for adult tags. In almost every country, wherever there is a sport team, there is a coach for the team as well.

What would a coach do?
  • Help plan scrims, and competitions such as tournaments. (I know SLT is not interested in hosting tournaments, hence why there wasn't one this summer, nor last winter. We haven't had a tournament in a year, so with this role, if given the chance I believe they could host tournaments, or just more competitions in general if not official tournaments.)
  • Help plan team events for teams that don't typically get interact with others. Most teams are already fine in this area, due to captains doing the work to maintain friendships through other teams, but if a team doesn't have many events, they could help with organizing.
  • Be a guiding figure for new players, who want to join a team, and help coach them towards joining said team.
  • Connect sports to teacher faction, and help plan "school faction" events as a whole.

How would a coach be implemented
I had a few thoughts for how this could be possible, maximizing the role while minimizing any issues that could come from this, so here is some possibilities:
  • Former Captains: As the captain role is already chosen by staff, and they tend to be well liked within their sport, this could lead as a way for someone to step out of the captain role, while having a lose connection to teams.
  • Teachers/Professors: Often at schools, a teacher will also be a coach for a team, so just make this happen here. In this case, there wont even need to be a new tag for a coach, but rather teachers who are connected to a team, could become a "coach" for that team. Sort of like club supervisors!
  • Chosen Role: Just give it to a few people, who are chosen by staff. Like lifeguard, mascot, etc.
  • Coordinator -> Supervisor: I'm sure everyone who is apart of sports already, knows about coordinators. The role could just be given an IC title as well with it being a "supervisor" which would make sense for those people to be able to host things more in character, rather than just OOCLY.

I understand this suggestion has heavy limitations, so take it with a grain of salt.

Some obvious cons of said role:
  • An unnecessary role.
    • I think some already existing roles are a bit unnecessary, for example lifeguard. A coach role could be sparsely given out, and thus not really be a big deal.
  • Captains/coordinators already do most things.
    • This is absolutely not meant to take anything away from captains, but rather just give them a helping hand for some organization tasks.
  • Teams might not like a coach who gets to hang around their team.
    • I get this one, however I think if the way it gets implemented could make this perfectly fine to deal with.

How will this benefit the server and community?:
I believe this could help connect a really big faction, with other factions. As it stands right now, sports faction is pretty isolated from other roles. SLT interacts with team members however thats about it, teachers are currently not involved in any way other than reprimanding when theres rivalry. Team members are also encouraged to not let any non-team players into rivalry, hence dividing them as well. So I believe this would benefit the community just by bringing the server a bit more realism, and also connecting other roles to the side of Sports.

Additionally, I believe it would help ease the weight of what captains and coordinators already do, obviously not replace any of their duties.

Again, I also see limitations on this role, but thought it would be a neat idea to propose if anyone has any further possibilities for it.

This is already a thing, they are just working behind the scenes, rather than having a role in game for it :)

PE Teachers/Professors can already do this, just ask
Teachers don’t really have anything to do with sports teams currently. While they COULD do stuff, it’s not like they do it nor is it part of their duties. Even if they could do SOME of the things I listed, they don’t have access to any shared chats with team members, so communication would be hard.

Again, I mentioned it possibly being just an additive role of a teacher instead of a separate tag. (Like councillors being club advisors n such).

Which parts? Because I am apart of HS event team, a rivalry panel member, and co-captain so I do end up seeing almost everything that gets planned for the teams.

I know there is the roles of coordinator (art_class, ybonnu) and event lead?? (Jayla, I don’t know what their official title is regarding team involvement) which I mentioned in suggestion post as well. Yes, I do see them doing work, and it’s all lovely, they should get credit icly imo.

Regardless, I don’t see anyone planning competitions which is a major part of this for me. We do not have tournaments, we haven’t for the past year, hosting them ourselves is hard because of the basic fact that hosting a competition while you’re competing is a conflict of interest.

In addition, another point of this was the “coach for new players to join x team”. Which, again, no one really does that. Some people on teams will go out of their way to help players they see practicing whatever plug-in, but at the end of the day often namemc’s, greenies, etc. are too scared to approach and ask for help.

EDIT: also, if there is more stuff that is being done behind the scenes that I don’t already see, then it should be a bit more hands on, because no team members are seeing it, and I think whoever is doing that work, 100% deserves credit and recognition :D

Sport Event Team members are in charge of creating events for teams, but the problem is that a lot of events just go unattended. Also, tournaments are such a large-scale event that it takes weeks to plan, coordination across numerous parties, and even on the day of, takes up the ENTIRE day; it's not something a non-staff member can just do. Even if they were able to 'assist', the large bulk of the stress is usually tasks they would not be able to alleviate.

I know tournaments themselves are a pain, which is why I suggested "competitions" in general, which I know is definitely doable, as we had an unofficial tournament last winter in volleyball, hosted by Eco. Which, had a proper bracket, referees, and three of the four teams, and sports club. Before that in 2022 the volleyball community had 2v2, and 1v1 tournaments, with a commentator, some of which is recorded and posted to YT.

I do understand tournaments are complicated, but competitions should not be as impossible as they currently are written off to be.

I think this would be a really good addition to the sports faction.

The part about competitions, I know teams do have scrimmages against each other for fun. Is there a certain thing you’d want to see in competitions that you don’t see in scrimmages?

Larger scale, paying attention to vios, referees. Volleyball often does scrims but it’s just one team against another, not like all four teams, and they’re more relaxed so often there’s no whistle / point keeper.

Also, it would be nice for it to be just titled under the label of a more official competition even if not the tournament label, because it motivates players to get better to try and win.

Alright! That’s understandable, I’m sure you could always bring the competition up to the VB teams and have a mini-competition and team bracket. Not only would it be fun and motivates the players like you mentioned but this could act as an alternative to tourneys too!

I’m sure this is possible for the rest of the plug-in sports to be involved in as well!! I think it’s just a matter of getting the competitions organized and having all parties agree to participating.

Another way this could help motivate players is having an actual current rank standing like how IRL sports have standings when it comes to seasons.

I think it’d be super neat if each sport had a standing system when seasons start. Like an actual visible table to look at. Sports could have an off-season to practice and change up their roster and positions if needed, then you have the regular season where the teams go against competitions to keep their standing rank (0-1,1-0,etc) and then maybe even a championship season, which normally would be the tourneys, but if tourneys don’t happen it could just be listed as another competition game.

Overall, if the coaching role isn’t implemented I do love the idea bringing in actual competition games for the faction.

Thank you for your suggestion!

- This role already exists, however they're there to assist faction leads in decision making and give more accurate feedback.
- We wont be adding roles to teams for coaches as we've done this in the past which led to some leadership issues, alongside that most would prefer to be on the team rather than assisting them. Nevertheless, we may introduce these temporarily leading up to events like Sports Day, Tournaments, and Scrimmages, using the P.E. Teachers & Professors, and maybe some School Employees.
