Derik was born in Mykolaiv, Ukraine, one of the smaller cities in the country with a population of about 500,000 people. His father was a priest, so he was taught to respect religion and to never harm a person in his life. He was bullied for how he was raised, beaten by his fellow students in school because they thought of him as weak. As he had grown, he had lost his faith, putting it all in science instead. He was enlisted into the rebellion against Russia at the age of 12 and was put into the "Сміються акції" squadron, or "Laughing Stocks" along side Sullivan Vyhovsky, Koga Ikeda, Mykhail Tapinski, and Fenrir Dovzhenko.

During the rebellion, he was enlisted as a Medic and was stationed to sit back and treat wounded when they needed it. As the war raged on, he had saved Fenrir from bleeding out, and had carried him back to the med tents where the real doctors and surgeons would keep him alive. After returning to the front, he was attacked by a Russian soldier with a knife, gaining the cut on his cheek. He had a dangerously close encounter with the knife to his throat as he wrestled the Russian until someone had taken the courtesy of getting the enemy off of him.

After the war, he had gone back home to his family, his father was glad to hear that he hadn't killed anyone. His mother was just glad he came home alive. He had gone to see his new found friends every so often, meeting up with Sullivan, Mykhail, Koga and Fenrir, who were all older than he was but they had bonded over their time at war. Although, after Sullivan's disappearance from Ukraine entirely, they had felt a sense of dread. Koga was the second one to leave Ukraine in search for their long lost friend. However, later in the years, they had received a call from Koga about finding Sullivan in Takashima, Japan. The three remaining in Ukraine scrounged up as much money as possible and flew themselves to the small town in Japan.
