Why are Teachers so important to SchoolRP?:
OG;
As a pupil/student I often found there to be a gap in classes during some IRL timeslots, though it has gotten better with recent additions to the team. As the teacher application guide states teachers have a tremendously important role to play within SRP. I'd like to help breathe life into some of the more quiet hours (= early- afternoon European time, I can be very flexible in regards to colleagues) for the players online.
As an ex-IRL English/history teacher I think I can bring just a little extra to make the character of Valdemar to be a great teacher not only in class but also outside of the class.
The teacher's job all greatly transcends the teaching job after all.

Ingame; Teachers are, as stated in the teaching application guide, of the utmost importance to the Karakura town. When new players receive a great class or see teachers interacting with pupils in the hallways they will be more inclined to stick around, growing our community even more. They are the bread- and butter for a large amount of the population's first interaction in the game and many an hour will be spent on the school grounds. The more active teachers the more possibility for players to get develop their characters, learn about the history of the world and Karakura itself. Homework is also an important part of the character development as it is needed to graduate into college.

Do you acknowledge that if you are inactive you may lose your role?: Yes
Do you agree to undergo teacher training if your application is successful?: Yes

Describe your character:

Valdemar is quite tall at 187 cm. He's 32 and has dark blonde hair and bright blue eyes as a testament to his Norwegian heritage. He looks proper and casual-chique in his brown suit. Sometimes he is to be seen wearing a red kimono which he wears during more formal events. He looks approachable but can have a stern edge if need be. He is often seen walking with a walking cane, onlookers might find him walk perfectly well without it as well. The stick is rather ornate and is used as an attribute rather than a medical requirement. His hair looks a bit greyer than a few months ago, the man's clearly gone through something which has both put a physical and psychological strain on him.

*Valdemar seems to fidget a little as he turns on his webcam and feels a bit uneasy, he seems to notice this and laughs*

"Do excuse me for my nervouseness, it's my first time applying through a video-call interview. I would wish to extend many thanks for allowing such a flexibility, as well. The last few months have been, trying, to say the least. At any rate, I do hope to find you all in good health. As for me, the whole ordeal of the fishing accident was enlightening, but I have gotten even more appreciation for certain strands of poetry now. I've noticed there's new job openings and as I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Karakura High last time, I'd gladly rejoin the best team of professionals the city has to offer not only to the Karakuran citizens, but the world as a whole.

As we've met before I don't think I need to recant the story of my past, although I have failed to mention someone especially important to me back then and I'll also add a little on what's happened the past few months.

You see, I haven't mentioned how or why I specifically chose to come to Karakura. I believe it would be best if we started off during my Erasmus-exchange in München, Germany. I met someone there who would change my life, I met Hansel Desmond, my husband. We quickly and rather unexpectedly bonded, he is rather aloof and relaxed while I am ehh, more strict in my ways.

Hansel's been a lawyer for the Karakura government for a while now and as we were feeling rather adventurous, we decided to both move here and settle. We even got married here as soon as I got my previous teacher's license!
Our life here was rather special and just like our intense love and life together, picked up quickly. I will forego all the details, but we ended up adopting six or seven children together, one of which was already adopted by Hansel.

My near-perishing at the hands of the incident has brought me new insights, big and small, and while it will take a while to get through them all still, I feel this increased insight will contribute to me being a better teacher. Until the time of me getting back in the thick of it, I'm trying to occupy myself with studying another master's in geology and paleontology at the university of Osaka. They provide some very interesting online degrees, I can really recommend them.

At any rate, it's about time I finish up this question I imagine. *chuckles*
Last time I told you I was an idealist. My teaching experience here at Karakura before the accident has only strengthened my views. I've had some challenging classes, for certain, but I have also met several pupils who have touched my soul with their work and writings. I hope my lessons too have touched them and have made them a better, and more full human being. After all, that's the education we should all strive for, the lasting kind."

What is your character's outlook on students and co-workers?:
*Valdemar nods as if he clearly understands*

"Ahh, yes! Well, we're all here to do our part in the bigger organisation of the school. Co-workers need to be enabled to do their jobs to the fullest and may need help with that (f.ex. if you as a teacher pass by another teacher who just kicked out a pupil, offer to take the pupil away). However...even colleagues have to uphold standards. Safety regulations for the pupils are non-negotiable and they should never be brought into any dangerous situations by staff. We can ask our pupils to obey the rules, but we as staff also bear a great responsibility for those who are in our care, it goes both ways. I do however not accept any form of violence or rule-breaking on the school grounds. Rules are there to be upheld! Although I must add that it isn't always easy to uphold the rules if not many colleagues are about. There's an awful lot of students and a limited amount of colleagues during some times, but we make do and the duty is what the rules require!

Furthermore, pupils are required to be at school during hours, so they best make the best of the time they spend inside the school walls. It is an attitude I have been trying to uphold both in spirit and action, trying to be as helpful as possible both in- and outside class and even outside the school walls. Previously I mentioned how heroes are not only to be found in ancient Greek myths but are also present in everyday life. My brother, son and myself have recently experienced that during our unfortunate fishing trip.

As our little boat was sinking and we were drifting off, trying to keep together, we were rescued by an old man who did not know us. He had no obligation to jump in his little boat and sail the rough waters, with danger of his own life, but he did it anyway. He braved the broiling sea to save three individuals who should, if they had at all been sensible, not been at sea during that time. It has only strengthened my view on heroism during modern life.

I miss the students of Karakura High dearly, even some of the rascals whom I will of course not name."

*Valdemar breathes deeply, clearly very content about his answer and radiating passion for the profession, the better observer also notices a little regret and sadness in his eyes, though it is hidden under layers of passion*

What is your character's motivation for teaching?:

*Valdemar turned quiet for a second as he paused to think*

"I've not only been given second chances in life but more recently third chances, thanks to a hero who saved my son, my brother and myself. I want to give other pupils a chance to grow as well and look at people and help them meet their potential. Teachers their influence is limitless, when we teach with passion, we touch eternity.

Regarding my subject, English has always fascinated me, because it’s more than just grammar, vocabulary or literature! It’s about communication, creativity, and connection. I was inspired by literature, poetry, and the storytelling traditions of many cultures, and I want to inspire others in the same way. A good English teacher not only helps pupils master language but also teaches them how to think critically, argue persuasively, and imagine freely, all while employing the Queen's English, of course!
The myths of the knights of the round table and King Arthur have also played an important role in my personal morality, I hope to be able to transfer some of this conviction and steadfastness in my pupils.

I think a teacher has to be a subject matter expert first and foremost, but not unimportantly, also a mentor for pupils in order to help them grow up as a responsible adult. That's why a teacher's tasks expand way beyond the classroom and entail the entire school, even if he isn't teaching. During my time in recovery in the hospital after the seafaring accident, I've had a better look at pedagogy and developmental psychology, never hurts does it? Although it did start to hurt when my brother, a psychiatrist and a know-it-all, started bleating on how he thought certain interpretations of the book rather shallow. Nevertheless, knowledge is growth!

Coming to think of it, maybe it isn't a bad idea to teach the pupils some common sense either. Like not try to get into a boat on a roaring sea when none of the occupants have any sailing experience and dark clouds loom in the distant horizon."

Roleplay Scenarios

A student in class is struggling to understand the content, what would your character do?:
I would first ask a fellow pupil to try and explain it to them. By explaining pupils gain greater understanding over the matter and having a peer explain things might shift their attitude towards the content a little. Sometimes it perks pupils up a little when a friend (or rival!) from their own class is explaining subject matter to them.

If this still does not work, I'd try and switch it around and try to let the pupil explain to me what they do know about the subject matter, using this as a starting point to know how deep their (lack of) knowledge is. I'd possibly use some of the other periods (study time, lunchbreak or hometime) to help the pupil out. There's also other people in the staff who could help out further if need be.

When I notice several students are struggling with a subject I might take it up into the following class as an introduction. Repetition is key to memorisation!

A student is continuously being disruptive in class, talking out of turn, and making jokes with classmates. What would your character do?:
At the start of every class Valdemar makes the rules clear as a first soft-touch with class management. If students however misbehave, Valdemar will take swift action.
The student will be addressed in person when I am standing next to them. I will give them a second chance which will also be announced at the start of the class. Everyone always gets a second chance.

If they however proceed to disrupt class, they will be sent out. If a student gets removed from class two times or keeps being disruptive outside of class, they also get detention.

Valdemar will not accept any kind of discussion on behaviour in class, this too will result in removal. Valdemar is just and will uphold the rules but he is also strict. He's heard too much of the darkness crawling around in Karakura's underbelly and he will not stand for it!

Provide at least 2 interactive class ideas related to your preferred subject:
Word-games

I've noticed word-games with the entire class can lead to some hilarious but also deeply profound lessons. In these games activity from all the present students are required. I start the story off by setting the scene and then the first pupil on the row in front of me adds a sentence to the story, the next student adds another sentence, yet another, etc. etc.

I've tried this before and it is a truly fun exercise. Mind you, best not to do with a totally full class I reckon.

Creative Writing Workshop

Students are given a story prompt and they then have to write short passages and share them aloud. The class will also have to give constructive feedback, this will both encourage creativity, confidence and expression for the speaker/writer and the class will gain the ability to give constructive feedback and also receive feedback.

Both ideas use a minor form of physical movement too, which is encouraged in a theoretical classroom as it keeps the pupils active.

Poetry Excursions

I would start off the class by giving a poem of a certain author and say something about the style. We would then leave the classroom behind us and venture into the school or world outside, settling on a special spot. We'd take a rest there and let the pupils be inspired in their writing of their own poetry, by their surroundings.

Prepositions of Place

Because a little grammar here and there never hurts it could be fun to have a look at the prepositions and play a game. The prepositions of place are a lovely subject that's easy to activate the pupils with. Pupils could group up in small groups of 3 and then act out prepositions like "on top of" or "behind" or "in front of". Two pupils could do the acting and one of them could be the judge in the group and decide who's acted it out best. This activity could take place inside the classroom, but also in the hallway or on pretty much any other place in school.
