Why are Teachers so important to SchoolRP?:
The clue is almost in the name of the server, that being SchoolRP. When new players join SRP, the first thing they’d do is head into the school grounds during a school day, and hopefully attend a class. Teachers are one of the first roles that these new players might meet. Teachers have the responsibility to expose these new players to roleplay etiquette, how to write actions and also as a general introduction to the world of SRP itself.
Alongside interacting with new players, Teachers are also part of the main SRP gameplay loop, where the majority of the player base have Highschool characters which are all required to head to school during a school day. Teachers provide that extra level of school roleplay asides from just being on school grounds during the week.
Do you acknowledge that if you are inactive you may lose your role?: Yes
Do you agree to undergo teacher training if your application is successful?: Yes
What is your motivation for becoming a Teacher?: It’s a mixture of both contributions that I believe I can give OOCly, and the perfect progression of my character that I’m applying with. I’ve been playing SRP on and off for 6 years now, having my character organically grow through college and experience many things. It’s time for him to progress to an adult, and I think there’s no better place than to be a teacher.
In an OOCly sense, I believe I can contribute, not only with knowledge of my chosen subject, but I have experience attending these lessons with my characters over the past few years. I know exactly what students want from a lesson, when lessons are boring and when they’re exciting and I hope to use that experience to provide an engaging experience for all students!
Then in an ICly sense, it’s the next step for my character’s age progression. He’s been both a Student Councillor and a Club Lead, so he’s already well versed and experienced in how the school operates and it’s rules. I believe my character has a lot to contribute and teach, not only in the curriculum, but also with extra-curricular activities too.

Describe your character:
Harry Shima is a long time Karakuran, but after returning from a long multi-year vacation to his home of Wales, he’s come back to educate the local students in Computer Science! His defining characteristic is between his slight stutter and his single eye, lost in a horrific accident on the very same Karakuran streets he’s returned to. He’s very easy to get along with and prides himself on loyalty. His biggest failing is that he’s quick to trust, often trusting first and asking questions later. It makes him easy to befriend, but easy to manipulate if he’s involved in the wrong crowd.
He can be rather forgetful sometimes, sometimes airheaded, but his best quality is when he has a passion for something, he’ll push and push to pursue it. Whether that be the study of the supernatural, upholding the standards of the student council, or more recently his new passion for teaching, he’s always looking for that next chapter in his life to pursue.
As a teacher you’d likely see him finding a good mix between a friend and a mentor. He finds the best way to teach a student is less of a brick wall to throw textbooks at, but to treat them like a friend at a coffee shop, telling them all the wonderful and interesting things about the world. This approach may have a large payoff for some students, but others may seek to fully take advantage of such a technique, something Harry may have to adapt per student.
Roleplay Scenarios
A student in class is struggling to understand the content, what would your character do?:
Should such a thing be brought up mid way through the class, and it’s consistently brought up, Harry’s first goal would be to speak to the student either after the class or at a time that suits them and properly understand the issue. There’s no reason to just recite the same lesson again hoping for a different result. He’d get the student to lead, getting them to voice their understanding first, hearing what they say, then noticing where the underlying issues lay.
He always believes that you can never just teach a student what formula, you must teach them why that formula.
A student is continuously being disruptive in class, talking out of turn, and making jokes with classmates. What would your character do?:
With any disruption, Harry would first of course call it out, asking the student to remain quiet and raise their hand should they wish to speak. If the disruption continues, Harry would try and isolate the student, getting them to move desks away from any other students that they might be disrupting.
Then should the disruption continue, through my own experience, this requires me to approach this differently depending on OOCly factors. If this is a long time player then I’d be able to approach this, knowing that they’re aware of punishments and how to fearRP being given detentions etc. Therefore I’d continue escalating the situation, threatening a detention slip and handing one out if necessary and keeping this entirely ICly.
However if they appear to be a newer player, troll or not, I’d try and explain to them the server rules in /looc regarding fearRP of teachers and detention slips. I’d try and resolve it as much as I can ICly, but there eventually does become a limit, especially if it’s disrupting other student’s time, where they may need to be kicked from the class. But hopefully through educating them in /looc, they may be able to turn the situation around!

Now the average class will likely be on the basics of computer science, with some architecture, networking and explanations of how the internet works, perhaps some small coding introductions with quizlets or kahoots involved. But for 2 stand out lessons, they are as follows!
The first lesson would be something we can do easily inside of the classroom. I’d get my hands on a Geiger counter, showing how even in everyday life, the counter will tick occasionally, explaining that these are detections of everyday background radiation, mostly from smoke detectors and potassium, but something cosmic dots and electrons that travel lightyears to just land on the geiger counter here. I’d then get an old smoke detector, showing off how smoke detectors work.
And finally I’d end with a really cool real life example of a cosmic ray interfering with someone’s Super Mario Speedrun. In 2013, someone was navigating a difficult jumping section of a level, when their character was flung into the air out of nowhere. After investigating it for years, it turns out that a cosmic ray had entered this person’s games console, likely a highly concentrated ray of neutrons, went through the exact bit that stored the height data for the Mario character model, and it flipped one bit from a 1 to a 0, that caused the character to suddenly fly into the air. Such a crazy coincidence was caught live on video and can be watched on youtube!
The second lesson, to plan one that goes outside of the classroom. I’d like to show the class a hidden world that can only be seen through infra-red. I’d take the class on a small field trip, heading out into the woods to a small nearby cave if possible. Before we enter, I’d get all the students to bring out their phones and their cameras. Then I’d pull out a TV Remote and start pointing it towards their phones. They should be able to see the hidden light that’s emitted from these TV remotes, and I’d proceed to explain how TV remotes work and how they transmit data, almost secretly to their TVs, with the live demonstration being a lot more memorable than just talking about it
Before heading into the cave, I’d pull out an Infrared Camera and show it off to the class, explaining how it works. I’d get a student to find a dead leaf, and then a nearby living plant. And when looking through the IR camera, you’d be able to see how the living plant’s leaves very brightly reflect the IR light, but the dead leaf reflects almost nothing. This just displays another hidden world that we can’t see, any how many animals and plants react differently to different lights and wavelengths.
Then, once done we’d proceed into the cave, armed with torches and the IR camera. Once we’re safely inside the dark, through the lens of an infrared camera, I’d show the students the reflection of a variety of cave animals, bats and spiders eyes should all show up as small glowing orbs in the cave. This shows their eyes being able to reflect IR light, showing up on the camera. A small eerie sight, but something to show how these creatures view the world differently, and technology allows us to see it.
