Hakimaru Garoujima can be described as a fairly calm and collected character. He’s a seemingly down to earth guy at first glance, and that prediction would be correct. Haki has good morals and isn’t one to throw himself into battle unless required, he knows what’s wrong and what’s right. He would describe himself as a goofy individual with set priorities in life. His ambition to become a future athlete radiates strongly within his overall persona. His plain appearance is a good representation of his character, displaying his simplistic traits pretty well. He fits into the crowd very well, all the while managing to retain his comfortable and wid aura around those he is friends with. Despite his cool and responsible tendencies, it may surprise you how energetic and hyped up the male can get when playing the sport he loves, football. This is also shown off very well around people he is close with. Hakimaru ensures his good side shows in public and gives off a chill vibe. This matches perfectly with the kindness he tries to exhibit as often as he can. BACKSTORY:
Hakimaru was born precisely on the 1st of August 1999 at 1:32 PM in a hospital based in Seoul, Korea. He was born into a Korean-Russian family, his dad being of Korean descent and his mother pure Russian. The family he was born to was deemed rather large, considering he had been born with three brothers and one sister. Growing up, his mother hadn’t been all that supportive of his life. His father wasn’t exactly a saint, either; Haki’s parents would seemingly be fed up with each other, the male’s mother, especially. This continued on until Hakimaru was 6 years old, by then his mother had dealt with these uncomfortable circumstances for too long and had enough of such a lifestyle.
This event triggered obvious negative emotions in Haki’s dad, an obvious alcoholic. It was not easy dealing with the departure of such an important character, after all, this left him alone with multiple kids to attempt to care for. Nonetheless, he ignored his responsibilities as a father and drank his feelings away. Every night when he came home, he’d do nothing but drink. It’s as if he had no care in the world. This soon affected his performance in daily life, he’d go to work intoxicated at times. Naturally, this didn’t play off well for him; it resulted in the man being fired. At this point, there was nothing else to lose. If anything, this fueled and encouraged the addict to continue with his unhealthy habit.
As obvious as it is, alcohol and children don’t mix well. Hakimaru’s dad became abusive, the man acted as if he had no respect for his children. He lost all sense of kindness and reacted negatively to anything that went even the slightest bit wrong. As his dad fell down this rabbit hole of drinking and tragedy, he began to beat his son as a coping mechanism for his anger. Unnecessary violence became present in the family and Haki had a healthy childhood robbed from him before he could even realise what was going on.
This behaviour didn’t go unnoticed, of course. Haki’s poor excuse for a father had no shame in his antics, he paraded himself out of the house obnoxiously and had the audacity to drive while intoxicated. As expected, he eventually ended up behind bars for drunk driving and endangerment of those around him after a rather nasty encounter with a police officer. This left Hakimaru with nothing but his siblings. It was difficult, but the dysfunctional family managed to cope. Haki’s sister took care of him and was the main source of relief and support in his life at that point in time. His brothers, not so much; not long after the incident, they began to move away. In the meantime, Haki made short visits to his dad in prison.
During ages thirteen through sixteen Hakimaru was enrolled in middle school. His experience was rather melancholy. He ran into many malicious characters which ended up in him being a known target for bullying. Despite his ongoing tragic history, filled to the brim with harassment from his peers, Hakimaru had no intent to give up in life. He endured the violence and name-calling, brushing it off despite the pain it may have brought him.
All throughout Haki’s struggles, he managed to bond with one significant friend in his life. This certain friend hadn’t been oblivious to Hakimaru’s family problems, this had resulted in a life-changing favour that would be remembered for the rest of his life. His friend had offered to take him into his family, the dot family. After a light discussion with the family head, it was all set. After all the traumatic memories, Hakimaru would finally be accepted into a warm and loving family. The sheer thought of such a thing happening filled him with joy.
Upon joining the new family, he was unfamiliar and hesitant due to their kind treatment. After all, it was nothing he had seen before. Nonetheless, the drastic change in life began to soften Hakimaru’s character. He became goofier, learning how to joke around and gaining a light-hearted aura to himself. The Dot family were based in Karakura, causing him to enroll in the local school there. He had sporty ambitions, trying out for the basketball team and becoming a successful and appreciated member. He worked his way up to co-captain on the team and had a real passion for the sport. Unfortunately, the team did take quite the tumble, having a lot of the members leave; this included Hakimaru.
This opened up new opportunities for him, however. A brand new college football team required members, this was a challenge that Hakimaru and his close friend, Jiho Won, were up to take. Naturally, things didn’t always go in Haki’s favour. He did not make the team, his friend however did. This in no way stopped Haki, if anything it gave him more ambition to try harder. He practiced and practiced until he was sure he was fit, and just like that - he found himself on the team after trying out a second time.
To this day, Hakimaru is on the football team enjoying life as much as he can; he’s making the most of his life.
