INQUIRY OF THE INBORN WANDERER

OOC Note
- This backstory is a collection of lore based writing and IC experiences (3+ OOC years)

____________________________________________________________________________

The sun, that was what they ascribed her to be. With a smile that never waned even in the most hopeless of seasons. As though light poured from her expression, even as golden tears fell. The color she fondly adorned, reflected the nature the women attempt to exemplify. Often to a deficit of her own well being, yet she never faulted to remain upstanding in the spotlight of those who followed her example. An angelic woman with no flaws to speak of. At least none she would openly display without horror of them being judged. She knew full well the extent of her flaws, it followed her like a dark fog, easy to become lost in. She would ruminate often when the doors were closed and the walls were thick enough to silence the ugly, horrid sobs that flooded like a burst dam. But all these things were more than understandable when taking into account the entirety of her exhausting and worrisome experience in living.

. . .

In the early hours of an August morning, when dew lightly veiled the ground, a crisp air was upon the world. Before the waking, before the tiresome hours of the day were underway, all was quiet. An unfathomable light gently seeped from over the horizon. Far off from any busy city or crowd, a small farmhouse was lit ablaze by the cries of new life and the agony of death, one heaving their first breath, and another exhaling a final time. The desperate sobs of a new father and now widower, broke out, while his young son peaked from behind the bedroom door. The boy’s eyes widened in terror, disbelief even. The father clutched a small newborn, holding her close to his chest, and with the other hand, he held the cold, lifeless palm of his beloved wife. A quiet, humble expression rested across her face, the pain subsiding before her final breath, in the knowledge her daughter would remain.

. . .

The man, Hideaki Kaeda, screamed painfully as his gaze brushed over the lifeless body. The warmth of her fingertips slowly dissipated. His wife would never get to see her son valiantly take on the farm as his own, she would never feel the joy of hearing her newborn's first words. This woman would never embrace her devoted husband ever again. Nor would she deliver someone from the pit of sadness they claimed they could never escape. She was gone. Hideaki couldn't bear to closely overlook his new child, who was the spitting image of the woman he had lost. He let go of his wife’s hand, laying it beside her so she could finally rest. He instinctively rocked the baby, his eyes drawn back to the doorway. A broken record of a voice slipped through his cracked lips.

“Rōnin, come meet your sister, Hanae.”

Part I - Birth of the Restless Soul

Hanae Kaeda’s life is somewhat of a drag and a hopeless attempt to try time after time to find a place in the world. Yet it is important to understand the development in how she became who she is today. It began with loss, what most would consider taboo for a new life. Her father, soon after his wife’s death, became consumed with work as a way to cope. While her brother saw her as little more than a pest for the better part of their childhood. But even under these painful circumstances, they lived for their lifestyle and its purpose. Hanae was taught the value of hard work at a young age. As any child who grew up on a farm might come to realize, it requires the hands of everyone to create life from dormant seeds. It was a craft unlike any other, cultivating the land and the animals from helpless beings. She found wonder in how her hands could do so much. Her father had a deep respect that rubbed off on Hanae as she grew.

He often spoke of how grateful they should feel for the world around them. Nature had done its part by providing the resources to sustain them. The soil, the water, the sun, none of this was theirs, yet so graciously the world had allowed their hands to connect each element. To create life was to sacrifice, an idea that reflected her situation with her mother. In times of hardship, she found herself praying, as she had seen her father do. Hardships of famine or dry seasons, when food was scarcely found, that was when she bowed her head most often. It took on the raw form of a desperate cry, of which, by some miracle, never failed to be relieved, by the deities she had been taught to seek out.

Throughout Hanae’s schooling, she had a deep interest in helping other people. One of her most prominent traits was an unmatched empathy for the world around her. This empathy was often abused by her classmates and later down the road by individuals she trusted. Yet it never seemed to wane despite this truth. It was no surprise as she neared her graduation, her heart was set on receiving a degree in Psychology. Her father always emphasized the importance of education, and although a bit disappointed by her choice in degree, he was relieved to see her off.

But Hanae was always a wanderer, who could never quite settle down. She lived for the adventure and the beauty of life. A small farming town had hardly provided her a proper view of what the world had to offer. It felt like she had chosen too naively with a craft she was supposed to dedicate her life to. She had taken the first and most prominent option to connect deeply with others. The ginger, as will be reflected later in her life, was quite unsteady, even when she believed with absolute certainty she was in the right place. She was well on her way to receiving a bachelor's in psychology, yet deep seeded doubt festered. It forced her to recall the original roots she had been brought up in, she bowed her head in prayer.

The woman had sought to clear her mind, escaping to the nearby woods. Though the path abruptly ended, with a torii gate ensnared by overgrowth. Beyond such, the ruins of an old shrine of a lesser-known kami was edged onto a stone engraving. Hanae recalled such tales of tradition. Her mother and father were deep Shintoist followers, with a family shrine that never left its dedicated corner throughout the women’s childhood. It was ascribed to several kami and ancestors of her mother and father. Hanae had found solace in praying, it had often allowed her to feel the closest with her mother. As she remained at the overgrown and abandoned shrine, she felt a calling to grasp onto this prevalent constant in her life.

. . .

Though she finished out the degree she was so close to completing, Hanae knew the next step would not follow her naive choice. After much decision, she took up education in religious studies, at a university located in Osaka. The learner, the faithful servant, felt drawn to this path, one her ancestors would have been proud of. For the Kaeda family’s roots were far deeper than she had known when transitioning her studies. Though she would not remain in the dark forever. Under such a program, Hanae was directed to an internship at the Sumiyoshi Grand Shrine of Osaka. Hanae’s youth brought life back into the monastery, and she formed bonds with several staff. She poured her heart into each interaction, and in turn they guided her to understand the beliefs they held so dearly. Hanae eventually took up a full time position at the shrine, when an offer was proposed to her. This offer, forged by the Kannushi of Sumiyoshi, Hayao Narushima, was quite gracious. In exchange for her devotion and full time employment, they would allow her to dwell within the shrine as a miko, as well as pay for the remainder of her education. The three years following her agreement of the proposal were some of the most fruitful in her young life.

During this time she made several impactful connections, the first came in the form of a deaf priest. Kenzo Jinja was born without the ability to hear anything. Yet his outlook and devotion outshined most of his colleagues. Hanae realized this soon after interning at the shrine, which only furthered her desire to learn under him. She was not one to shy away from a challenge, so with some advice and insurmountable determination, Hanae dedicated herself to a second language, Japanese sign language. It was also during her time under Sumiyoshi, she grew close with two interns. Yūrei Gushiken O'Sullivan and Hestia Taiyō, who above lineage and blood treated her as a sister. She met Hestia first, followed closely by Yūrei. Although Yūrei’s internship was not of his own volition, not entirely at least. Hanae had pulled him off the streets, from criminal origins, to a devout and ambitious Shinkan.

In truth, Hanae Kaeda believed she was going to serve out her life in such a shrine. Dedicated to the kami and service of visitors. Though the woman's reputation of being a wanderer rose above it all, not even she had seen it coming. The women received a letter, a summons, of which could hardly be ignored. It came from an island southeast of Tokyo, of which she had only briefly been told of by her father. The home of her ancestors, Karakura, Japan. The letter was so pressing it uprooted her entirely.

Dear Hanae Kaeda

As a blood relative of the prestigious Itsbyoshi family, Kaeda, you are hereby required to accept this summons to appear within Karakura City. It is imperative for the betterment of your lineage and the preservation of your ancestor’s deeds. Your father, of which would ordinarily take up this summons is too ill-suited for this task, and your brother has already declined it. Should you accept this inquiry, you are hereby required to receive internship under I, the current Matriarch of Kaeda. You, along with two other family members will be taught the history of Kaeda, as well as the proper education for leadership of a family. You will also be charged with protecting and upholding the family name of Otori, of which is legally binding according to the marriage of your grandfather and I. It is your duty as a Kaeda to fulfill this request, make haste. Any further clarifications should be made following the receival of this letter. I shall see you in time.

With sincere regards, On'na Ienaga Sama Umeko Otori, councilor of Kaeda.

Not only had she never been prepared for the idea she might reconnect with a family she never knew, but to be summoned for the betterment of her lineage. She had finished her studies, would she truly leave behind what she had known, for a family she knew little of? For the nights following the letter, she felt restless. Unnerved, but more than that intrigued. The wanderer couldn’t be expected to simply be grounded forever could she? Eventually, the women took leave from the monastery to visit the small island. She had accepted the summons to appear, yet the inquiry of leadership was an entirely different matter. As she began to converse with her grandmother and learn of the deep rooted history of Kaeda, she could not ignore the heavy burden. Her father had briefly mentioned his family as though it were broken and irreverent. In some ways it was irrelevant to the modern era, but her grandmother sought to change that. The opportunity was too great to ignore, despite her love for Sumiyoshi, she knew the kami she served led her to this point.

It was not as though she were abandoning the life she had built in the last few years either. For within this small island, another monastery stood, that wrapped her family line and its beliefs. It was called the Shinsei Seinaru Monastery, it would be her new beginning as she learned alongside her grandmother the skills she had to grasp. She was not alone in this endeavor either, as Mitsuki Kaeda and Nyoko Kaeda, her cousins, took up positions beside her. Their partnership in leading the family would eventually form what was known as the Sasaki Advisory Board, each of them heading a branch of their family. Application to Karakura’s monastery was not difficult for Hanae. With shining recommendations from Kannushi Hayao, the lesser shrine accepted her due to her vast level of experience and knowledge. The women prayed that this time the kami would allow her to rest, to root herself firmly in this new place.

Part II - Servitude to the Unknowing

Enter Inari Kyohanashima, the Kannushi of the Shinsei Seinaru Monastery. Though he was quite different from Hayao, she found his efforts rather respectable. Hanae quickly found a home on the grounds, with both monastery staff, who became her brothers and sisters, and guests. Those of many ages often came to her with their woes, desiring her offered sanctuary from the harshness of Karakura. Several impactful characters grasped ahold of her, including Ahma Tokugawa, the Naishoten of the shrine. Hanae found comfort in her presence, Ahma diligently expanded her knowledge.

While she adjusted to this transition, she also followed the example of her beloved grandmother, who nailed into her the importance of steady leadership. She was made to juggle many roles at such a pivotal point in her life. Further into her stay at the monastery she took on the title of mother, as she grew close with two children, whom she adopted as daughters. Though the absence of maternal love within her own life made her consistently question her ability. Another impactful soul came from a priestess, Erina Hozumi. She became the Hanae's sister, though there were no legalities attached. They embraced one another in each trial and tribulation. But the twists and turns of the wanderer were yet to stall as she found herself settling in. The worst was yet to rear its head. In the form of rumors of otherworldly beings, of spirits. As a miko, she surely believed in them, yet such physical encounters seemed the stuff of myth. Until the distant voice of a little girl cried out to her.

“It's dark, please can you hear me?”

At first, she believed it was a manifestation of paranoia created from fruitlessness rumors. Yet as the voices became frequent, ringing her ears, as a horrifying figure in a decayed raincoat showed itself, she knew it was real. The figure taunted her yet she held firm in her loyalty to the kami she served, driving out guests and making shrine workers cower. This figure adorned with a raincoat was dubbed Nikushimi, by Hanae, meaning hatred. She filled a journal with her tale, the battles she faced, and the harm she sustained. She learned of an apple that could protect a soul but could not draw blood as a weapon. Of the horrid backstory Nikushimi and his sister had faced. In a twisted tale of familial bonds, Hanae learned of the little girl she had originally heard of, Nikushimi’s sister, was named Mi-Cha. Perhaps it was the motherly instinct of Hanae that strengthened the desire to aid the little girl in being freed. The child remained close to her heart, as she battled demons, both inner and outer.

Hanae danced with fire and smoke. Forced children out of harm's way, and fought others who claimed they feared no devil. She clashed his blade with an ofuda as her only weapon and sealed him for some time. Yet when he was released from the chains, Nikushimi would seek only blood as payback. As the stakes grew higher and Hanae danced with his blade, more spirits appeared, marking the arrival of the 31st of October. Children often played with Ouija boards to experience a thrill, yet they upset the balance of everything the shrine workers sought to protect. There came a time when Hanae performed two exorcisms, one on a small girl in a forest cabin with Erina. While the other, came about in the company of criminals who desperately wished to save their comrade.

Each night as Hanae closed her eyes, she swore in her dreams the voices of these demons sang to her. Yet she ignored their hisses with the determination to rid Karakura of such an evil. The day came when many fell to Nikushimi’s blade. Each filled with a desire to be the hero in such a twisted fairytale. Even Hanae found she was no different. She screamed out his name, inquiring about the jealousy he possessed. But he was too far gone to be reasoned with. He taunted her and plunged his blade clean through her right arm. Each person present fled behind the safety of the wooden gates outlining the forest, where he could not enter. The pain was overwhelming, yet she bore it. Perhaps it was just a fluke, or maybe it was the kami smiling down upon her that day. However, Hanae found herself standing in front of Nikushimi with her beloved coworkers. This was, what Hanae believed, to be his end. They sealed him after a vigorous battle. Hanae’s words echoed through the forest that night.

“Be gone spirit. This is your end. In the name of Chiharu-Yamatsumi, you shall be rid of!”

But this was not his end. At least not in tormenting her. She found herself unable to continue. Each night was haunted by his blade and his taunting words. The mere mention of spirits sent Hanae into a fearful and frantic state. She had become so involved in saving the city her ancestors had loved dearly, she had nearly allowed it to take her life. The scars that permanently remained, formed consequences. Mental distress took the shape of post traumatic stress disorder and night terrors of which haunted her rest, and even the waking day. With a heavy heart, she walked away from the place she had grown to love. With her brothers and sisters, and her daughters. Though she dared not leave it unattended, the man she considered a brother, Yūrei, took her place in residency of the shrine. After consulting with Umeko, Hanae moved away for some time, remaining in her childhood farm in Shirakawa. From a distance she managed the family affairs, while recovering from the painful experiences that had wracked her three years as a monastery worker.

Part III - Augmented Regression

Once again Hanae had wandered. Strayed from a path she thought she would dedicate her entire life to. Once again she was lost. Yet some things never withered, her dedication to her faith held firm. There came a moment when Hanae reflected upon her time at the shrine. What she loved most was her ability to extend a hand and pull others out of turmoil. She was reminded of a younger version of herself, the empath who could not turn away. What came next, she hardly expected. Soon she found herself re-enrolled in college. Her love for learning was unmatched. Her desire to understand drove her to great lengths. The next two years rolled smoothly by, as she grasped yet another degree in teaching this time. Hanae returned fully to Karakura with an ambitious idea to help the many children who were misguided. It was a large change from the quiet life she had led. Becoming a psychology professor was a different kind of art to master. Yet she loved it all the same.

Even with the knowledge she possessed, even with the desire to help the weak, one thing remained. The trauma and pain she had endured, both mental and physical, had not been addressed. It did not matter how much she distracted herself with a new life. She entertained it for a while but soon the past would show its teeth. After the disappearance of her daughters, her passion fell through. The sacrifices she had made were for them, for the good of her family. She could no longer hide behind a veil of joy. She was low, lower than she thought possible. It wasn’t fear, it was a feeling of being consumed in grief. For a long time, she could not escape its grasp.

She visited the shrine as much as she could, drowning her sorrows in faith. An escape, brief relief and then an agonizing weight. It was at this time she re-encountered someone she would, as time passed, view as a sister, Calico O’Sullivan. Hanae connected closely with her, briefly before she had departed from the shrine some years ago. The bond had formed from rumors of a crazed man, Calico’s ex-fiance. Hanae informally met him, as a guest of the shrine. She had befriended him without knowledge he was the man Calico had once loved. Now upon her return to Karakura, and her hopeless confusion, she met him again. They called him a devil. He had a nickname to match that, Lucifer. She found it ironic, that a devoted Shinto believer interacting with someone dubbed such a title. Yet Hanae found pity in the situation he was in. He was at rock bottom, as she herself was. Lost. The weakness of the women took shape, unable to resist the desire to guide a lost soul. Even if it was just another distraction from the pain. She became involved and became a monster herself in a different fashion.

It began with an admission. His attempt to end the life of Calico following their fallout years back. Yet even with this news, she did not pull away from him. Despite the warnings dealt to her. She desperately sought to mend her life with love. Of course, as karma would have it, the hostile relationship would come crashing down later. She could not be his psychiatrist and his lover. What caused the most pain was her protecting his own daughter, Mazikeen, from his wrath. After the loss of her daughters, Hanae felt healed in her presence. While Lucifer tried to solve the wounded part of himself, Hanae as his accomplice, she took time to grow close to Mazikeen.

Lucifer was a jealous man. If stares could kill, he would have. As Hanae grew close with others, he sought to pull her away in fear she might leave him. This especially being the case for Celeste O’Sullivan. He hated her down to her very core. But this jealousy would do nothing in the long run. When Lucifer disappeared and did not return, Hanae found herself at a loss for what to do. It was not the first time one of her lovers had disappeared. The first was a young gentleman, the father to her second daughter, Aya, who she had adopted after his disappearance. It was as though history was repeating itself a second time. Though Hanae felt heartbreak, she also felt a weight leave her chest. No longer was his presence forcing her to conform, no longer was Mazikeen made small by her father.

As the year wore on with no sight of him returning, Hanae delivered a final text, a bittersweet breakup, that sent a wave of relief across her. All looked well and Hanae’s future was looking brighter, yet still, she had turned away from the past. October came back sooner than she had expected. Her fear of Nikushimi returning kept her bound. Yet she could not escape the call to know what had happened to him. During this time she befriended several spirits and made enemies out of a few. But none could make her fall to her knees like he could. Not even being snatched from her safe haven, the shrine, was enough. Her dread led her to the night she relieved her pains yet again.

. . .

Whether he recalled her or not, she did not know. Though from his tone and where he slashed her with his sickle, she thought he had. Once again she stood behind the gates of the forest, trembling. But this time she did not have the mental fortitude or spiritual weapons to take Nikushimi on. Later she would find, amongst the shrine staff a hero had emerged, Sho Hirobayashi. Who had done what she could not. He had rid the world of Nikushimi forever. Leaving Hanae feeling a relief like nothing she had experienced beforehand. A debt she could never pay in a lifetime. Soon after, the voices that haunted Hanae’s dreams dispersed. She was ready to move forward.

Her will was tested the day Lucifer returned. When she stood up to him with a confidence she had never believed was possible. She took Mazikeen’s hand, proclaimed that she was her daughter and he could not have her back. During his time away she had adopted Mazikeen formally. She was willing to fight to keep her daughter. He tried to tear her down, reminding her of the pains she had endured. Secrets she had entrusted to him, he promised he would dare not tell the world. When he spoke them, she fought back. The woman was done shying away from such pains. She had tied up the loose ends of her life. She finally felt ready to go on her way. For she was a wanderer.

Part IV - Plight of the Dead

Hanae Kaeda the Matriarch of Kaeda. Umeko, through the unrelenting struggles, had educated Hanae well. The women sought knowledge and understanding of the world in which she lived. The spirits that blurred the line of the living realm, only cemented the realization there was far more beyond the surface. Ambition was certainly a word to describe the women. Upon claiming her formal place as a leader of the Itsbyoshi Family, she was given an old relic passed on from previous generations. The archives of Karakura. A book with thinning and dust ridden pages that revealed the entire history and myth of the island her family line was involved with. She studied it like gospel, unable to contain her interest. As means to support the wanderer's journey, she took up servitude under another great family, Saiky. The library of their estate held many secrets left unturned, of which further explained the contents of the book she had been entrusted with. The Kaeda was invested in knowing what else lay beyond, reaping the benefits of serving the prestigious family.

Perhaps it seemed as though she had humbled herself far too much, her grandmother was enraged for a very long time at the prospect of her being an estate keeper for a family who had wronged Otori. It was as though, after taking up leadership, Hanae had forgotten the second part of the summons she had been given so long ago. To uphold the Otori name at all costs. Though, in many ways Hanae hardly saw her efforts as betrayal, merely an investment to discover the truth. She found allyship amongst several Saiky, though she eventually departed from this as well, knowing the extent of her grandmother’s disapproval would stain her position within the family.

When October reemerged, the women had completely started anew. The spirits that had haunted her were gone, though her knowledge of dealings with the undead was alive, those she had known were not. The shrine had fallen from its previous legacy, cleansing and sealing had gradually fallen through. Hanae provided what she could, taught what she knew, and advised the actions of the workers. Though this time was far different for her. The task at hand was not to save those who endangered themselves, for she could not even if she wished to. The woman was no miko, she was something far more unusual. Someone driven by an unrelenting want to understand the natural world and its secrets. A direct reflection of her ancestors, perhaps this was the position she was meant to uphold. Nonetheless, with the archives and her experience she sought to learn the stories of the dead. She listened to their woes, though some retaliated due to the spite of their past. Many plead to her, one to help him rid the city of an Itsbyoshi lineage that weakened the hearts of Karakurans. Others plead for her to seek out their family, and some plead for her to sacrifice herself to them. She carried their stories with her, guided the monastery workers, and all of this brought her to the brink of unremittable exhaustion. Her mind weakened severely and the sorrow of the undead took hold of her. She soon found great disappointment in herself. She had allowed her desire to know the truths of the world overshadow the safety of her own well being.

It was also during this time she became involved in a complicated love affair. A man, whom she had warranted at first as foolish and reckless, had quickly stole her heart, Ezio Calderòn-DeLuca. But in turn he professed there was another who he had loved first. Hanae turned down his advances, telling him to give his whole heart to the women he had desired before her. She was far too caught up in her longing to understand the undead, she could not give it her full attention. But he returned, proclaiming yet again his need, Hanae found herself slipping, eventually her heart overshadowed her rational thinking. Another devil wrapping around her. October came and went, their love flourished, she learned of his past, overlooking it all. Love was blinding. The man was painted too vividly with blood, with too many sins to confess in just one sitting. This man would be what would run the lineage she had been trying to restore, through the dirt. Yet she loved him deeply. It was this love that made her feel such anguish each time he found himself near to crossing into the realm of the dead. It was this love that brought her to her knees and left her covered in wounds. Taken hostage, as a pawn to harm him. Though he saved her, though she felt indebted by way of her life, the final straw reared its head. She watched as his body was hurled off a cliff to a quick and sudden demise. He was dead to her, and even though he still breathed, even though her love still prevailed, her rational took control. She left him. Leaving him with the parting words, live for yourself. Then and only then would she take him back into her life.

Hanae vowed to better herself. Allowing love to blind her so greatly, showed the true extent of the trauma that hindered her from becoming a competent matriarch within her family. She had wandered for so long she had forgotten to rest and recounter the perils of her journey. It was time to lay her reckless ambitions to rest and focus solely on her betterment. Hanae Kaeda was many things; a friend, an empath, a devout Shintoist, a mother, a matriarch, a historian, but more than those titles she ascribed to herself, she was human. With too many flaws to speak of, who desired to be the hero, the maiden who saved the weak and unknowing. It was time to be selfish, to start anew. For too long she had been a wanderer, going where she believed the wind, the kami, had taken her. But now she knew what she desired of her life, to seek out the secrets her ancestors had known to be present all this time. For the island of Karakura was eerily hiding depths not even she could fathom. She would devote her life to restoring her family name, not as foragers, though that was very much their origin, but as scholars of what could not be seen with the naked eye. What could only be made out through becoming one with the natural world in which they lived.

“This is merely the end of one book in a great library. Even when I join the kami, I will make sure with absolute certainty before my departure that Kaeda does not forget the legacy of our ancestors. Nor allow the seeds planted to die unwatered.”

she grew the closest with Erina Hozumi. A priestess of the shrine who clicked with Hanae right away. They were well and truly sisters. Embracing one another in each trial and tribulation.
THIS IS SO TRUE. I LOVE YOU!! Erina is around trust me!
