Backstory:
Hazel's childhood, although not abysmal, was nowhere near lovely. Her father was an unemployed alcoholic, and her mother worked two jobs in order to keep their family fed. Her parents relationship was very toxic, and Hazel and her sister, Willow would often spend their evenings eating dinner in their bedroom, afraid, upset, and trying to drown out the sounds of their parents screaming at each other.
One evening, when Hazel and her sister were both six years old, they lay in their beds, listening to their parents engage in a particularly heated argument. Eventually, the door slammed, indicating someone had stormed out and it was safe to leave their bedroom. Although she was technically supposed to be asleep, Hazel cautiously stepped out of her bedroom anyways, wanting to make sure her mother was okay. Hazel and her mother had always been close, and she often feared that Father would hurt her.
She found the house was empty. Of course this wasn't unusual, but things felt off this time, for some reason unknown to Hazel.
All she knew was that she had to find Mother. Fast. She rushed outside, and heard the small footsteps behind her, no doubt Willow trailing along. She and her sister strode along the road for some time, at one point seeing Father rush past them in the opposite direction, back to the house. This was even more bewildering, for Father was lazy and seeing him run the way he did was as absurd as a tortoise running a marathon. Little did she know, however, that there was a very good reason for his running in such a manner.
Eventually, Hazel and Willow reached the neighborhood fishpond. She stared at it for a moment, admiring the reflection of the sunset in the clear, icy waters. And that's when she saw it. A body-her own Mother's body, floated peacefully in the crystalline waters. Before she had even had time to process this, Hazel watched as her sister dove into the water, in a panicked, desperate attempt to save their mother. But, being only six years old, Willow didn't know how to swim, and Hazel had almost forgotten this until she saw her sister struggling in the water herself. She leapt into action, grabbing a large, moss covered stick, and heaved it into the water. She begged, screamed for Willow to grab onto the stick, trying to angle it in order to catch her. Eventually, Hazel managed to pull her sister out, but Mother was long gone by then.
She fell onto the bank, sobbing at the loss of Mother and nearly her sister too.
Life was never the same after that day, and although Father eventually, reluctantly got a job, he was still an alcoholic and so Hazel didn't see him much for the rest of her childhood, depending on her sister to take care of her.
