It's like a hybrid of the two, given that it has a pie-like crust but I mean.. It does have cake in it's name..

yeah but then you have animals like the koala bear, which isnt a bear at all. or the killer whale which is actually a species of dolphin

Cheesecake isn't by any means a pie, its just a cake that's very hard to get right, take it from me the actual pastry chef, cheesecake only has a weird crust because it's steam-baked and not regularly dropped in an oven like a normal cake. hence why it's jiggly it resembles nothing like a pie.
