What experiences do you have with roleplay?:
I have several experiences that I can list for whoever is reviewing this application
- Teacher and Professor Factions
In December 2025, my teacher character was made the Head of Department (History). I look forward to working with the other history teachers, because HONESTLY, compared to all the different subjects, history has by far the most potential purely because of the wide scope of things you're just allowed to teach. No other class is really able to (as effectively) explore Karakura's LORE, and even that is not the only thing you can teach about. Like, you can teach a class with interactive activities about that on one day, and then the next, you can do a deep dive into mass hysteria or the sociocultural implications of owning a Furby in the 90s, having students learn and exhibit the behavioural traits of furbies.
- Government Faction
- Club Lead
- EVENT TEAM
Involvement with the EVENT TEAM has put me in a position to create RP opportunities. Though most events are rather brief affairs, one stand-out experience I am going to highlight because I can: October 2025. I was given a good deal of creative freedom and worked with a member of the LORE team to devise a narrative whereby EVENT TEAM members would form a group of ‘mannequin makers’ selling ‘Halloween costumes’ in the forest. This was, of course, a front, a ruse. Regardless, though, it meant the environment of the forest would change to suit the narrative, and members of the community got to interact with EVENT TEAM members throughout the month, on an ongoing basis, and engage with that narrative if they wished to. Indeed, even now, when October is over, although the EVENT TEAM is no longer actively involved, this entire ordeal has had consequences and shaped characters. One of the Event Characters I played is now mentioned by name in a FOLKLORE thread, and their actions have gone on to influence the behaviour of a bunch of other characters, beyond October. Creating that kind of RP is incredibly rewarding.
What is your motivation for applying?
A mixture of
- Creating more RP opportunities for others and myself
- Based on something a staff member told me regarding the nuances of AcupunctureRP
- Interest in the role
My motivation has been steadily growing. I've always had a mild interest in joining the faction, but didn't really feel motivated as I had no character in mind or desire to 'make a new one'. However, I've since decided I have an existing character who I believe could make a good addition. Moreover, I learned from staff that... this character would never be allowed to practice acupuncture ... unless they first saw fit to join the Hospital Faction! So, oh my goodness, here I am! Of course, this is not the only reason I wish to join.
I really have had quite limited exposure to the faction because, quite frankly, the only time a character really goes there is for psychiatric treatment or RecoveryRP. In my experience, encounters with the faction aren't a regular thing and are quite rare. Which is a shame, because it doesn't have to be that way. It just is. So I got to thinking how a doctor might... be a particularly charismatic figure who people visit regularly, or develop a rapport with that goes beyond the monotony of handing out prescriptions or vaguely chucking medical advice at people in a very de-personalized way. A doctor people actually LOOK FORWARD to seeing and *refer others to*. In the end, I elected to go ahead and make the application you are now reading.
Which role are you applying for
Doctor
What knowledge do you have of the roles within the Hospital Faction?
Members of the faction always begin as a ‘trainee’ psychiatrist or ‘trainee’ doctor. As the title implies, this is when they receive training about their role. They are expected to pass some kind of assessment before becoming a ‘resident’.
From there, it would appear to me that the person has two options.
Option one is to stay where they are and potentially become an ‘attending’ doctor or psychiatrist, potentially going on to take on a leadership position as a Clinical Supervisor/Clinical Lead.
Alternatively, they may express interest in joining the ‘Emergency Department’, becoming paramedics, which will see them called outside of the hospital to respond to, as the name of the department implies, emergency medical situations.
The nuances of how these three groups really function, I will confess, that’s largely lost on me, but they have a monopoly on medical practice. Psychiatrists have some sort of referral system where they deal with characters requiring mental health assistance, while Doctors treat injuries, engage in surgeries, and deal with other medical maladies. Doctors also work in the morgue, which is honestly the most interesting thing/experience to me: as characters WILL from time to time die or just- y’know- you have people close to death or already dead brought in who have to be processed.
Characters are (from what I’ve been told) expressly forbidden from engaging in any RP, which would be unrealistic for their character to know without medical knowledge. Characters who have joined the faction and, at some point, leave without controversy can go on to be adult characters possessing that medical knowledge. It doesn’t just get beamed out of their head. Though there are rules regulating how it can be used.
Do you acknowledge that if training is held whilst you are online, you are expected to attend or you will be punished?
Acknowledged. Understood.

Character Backstory (Optional):
Seluvis Pratiphal was born on July 7, 2014, in Bangkok, Thailand. He was raised surrounded by the Buddhist tradition, specifically Theravada Buddhism. His mother was an immigrant from the Netherlands who came to Thailand as part of a university program, but ultimately came back to apply for Thai citizenship after falling in love with Seluvis’ father, Chanakrit Pratiphal, who was effectively a mortician and funeral services consultant for the Thai Royal family. He was always told by his tutors and authorities to trust his elders who ‘knew better’. However, he was a child and never fully absorbed this due to the influence of his father, who undermined all the suggestions from tutors within the confines of the family home at every opportunity.
His father expanded on the Mahayana tradition for Seluvis, and the family secretly practiced ‘esoteric Buddhism’, specifically Shugendō Buddhism, away from the scrutiny of the court in their home. The relative stability of Seluvis’ early years was not to last, as they were abruptly disrupted by the 2014 Thai coup d'état. The protests and unrest in Bangkok placed not only the monarchy under intense public scrutiny but also its courtiers and those tied to the palace infrastructure. The protests were centred in Bangkok, where royal residences and government buildings became flashpoints.
This unrest was all much too close for comfort; so Seluvis’ father, out of concern for his son’s safety, arranged for him to leave Thailand, while he himself remained to continue his duty. Seluvis would never hear from his father again. All attempts to contact him since 2014 have failed. At the age of seven, Seluvis was sent abroad, finding refuge in Tokyo with the Nakazumi family, eventually being welcomed into the family and adopting their family name.
Japan, in his father’s eyes, was more than a haven. While Theravāda Buddhism had shaped much of Thai culture, Japan’s Mahāyāna tradition, and the esoteric practices that had given rise to Shugendō, offered a familiar spiritual environment that was deemed suitable.

Karakura’s Hospital captured Seluvis’ imagination during his high-school years. He spent much of his time pestering doctors about the inner workings of the morgue, Hospital blood drives, and blood transfusion technology, as well the Hospital internships. He elected to study a Bachelor of Medicine at Karakura Community College with a particular focus on forensic pathology. He also studied to obtain a Diploma of Mortuary Science. The distinction here is that ‘forensic pathology’ is very much a medical discipline, a specialty focused on autopsies, figuring out what caused someone to die, etc., while ‘mortuary science’ isn’t strictly medicine: it is more about dealing with the deceased after death.
He had long wanted to work in the hospital and be closer to the dead precisely because his father was involved in a similar line of work.
Seluvis obtained his Diploma of Mortuary Science online, whereas his formal education occurred at KCC. He studied a double-degree, Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Traditional Medicine. Seluvis was disillusioned and deeply unsettled upon learning that there really wasn’t any use of traditional medicine, such as acupuncture, within Karakura’s hospital. He pursued a career in medicine, ostensibly, to show Karakura that most doctors within Karakura, through no fault of their own, are often 'not holistic, disregarding body, mind, and spirit’. Seluvis maintained throughout his studies, adamant through his essays, that too much of modern medicine is sick, cold, profit-driven by ‘twerps sitting happy behind that little pharmacy desk … content with overcharging, and focusing purely on symptoms and not causes'.
SECTION 2: MEDICAL HISTORY
What is your character’s medical speciality? Why did they choose this focus?Forensic pathology, ‘Mortuary Science’, and Traditional Medicine
Forensic Pathology is Mr. Nakazumi’s “formal” specialty. It is what he studied while at college, elected to learn more about, and to ‘specialize’ in.
HOWEVER, he has been an incredibly outspoken critic of forensic pathology during his entire time studying in Karakura. He often, to the annoyance of his peers and colleagues, spoke at length, often in highly performative rants, about how doctors need to ‘do more’ and ‘stop looking at everyone through a medical gaze!’. This mild outburst he gave at a virtual medical conference on ‘Ethics within Forensic Pathology’ encapsulates his passion well:
" I know it is just part of our work to learn why someone died, and that's fine. But we cannot pretend that what we do here is just science. These were human beings. Every choice we make, how we routinely handle the body in the execution of our duties, how we speak about it, whether we honor it, all of this reveals our values.
We, in chasing after someone's cause of death, often forget the dignity of the life that came before it. Forget that care does not end when breath does. It frustrates me to no end when we dismiss mortuary science as the domain of culture, and not the domain of medicine. Then again, the stupid doctors in Karakura can barely comprehend the Hippocratic Oath, so I shouldn't be so shocked by these dumb provincials doing away with nuance and the inherent dignity of the human person that applies EVEN AFTER DEATH. No, I won't hear otherwise "
During his Honours Dissertation, which he wrote during his studies, alarming those already within Karakura’s medical profession who read it, he strongly criticized contemporary systems of blood donation, using the UK and Karakura as ‘case studies’. His issue seemed to be that blood bags and sample tubes are labelled with unique donor identification numbers. He was incensed that all documentation attached to these bags detailed technical label requirements rather than listing donor names as a mandatory label field. He passionately argued that this system created 'safety issues' because it slowed down contact if transfusion issues occurred, made things difficult in rare situations where blood is donated for a specific person and thus disallowing emotional closure and accountability in the event of an adverse reaction, and, most of all, he criticized the practice because it 'depersonalized' the act of blood donation. He has made several petitions to the Hospital Director in Karakura to begin labelling blood bags, or at least giving donors the option for the bags to be labelled. That request has been ignored, along with a request for him to be permitted to assist a family's request to mummify a deceased relative of theirs within the morgue.
Does your character have any work experience in medical positions?
Seluvis has, since the time of applying, had some experience working within a morgue on the mainland, assisting police within Tokyo in forensic settings to determine causes of death in suspected murders and deaths that had occurred under suspicious circumstances. He has rather limited experience interacting with members of the public and treating them outside of clinical academic settings. Though during his stay on the Mainland, he was often bound by his Hippocratic Oath and staff shortages to step in and treat patients. His colleagues often mock him for being more interested in the welfare and rights of the dead than in treating people who are alive and providing them with medical attention.
SECTION 3: CHARACTER KNOWLEDGE
Describe your character; how do they look, what makes them unique? How would they be perceived by others?
[Below is a hypothetical, describing the character as if he were already part of the faction]
The most visually striking aspect of Seluvis’ appearance is his glass eyepatch. Evidently, it is a device he uses that boasts ‘optical magnification properties’, in his words. It is not a medical device, nor medically necessary at all. It’s essentially just a really fancy magnifying glass he has strapped to his face. Naturally, this invites comment and inquiry, which he is only too happy to accommodate.
He strikes most as someone who loves praise, loves talking about himself and his ideas. Indeed, he speaks a lot. Extremely conversational. Yapper-in-chief.
He possesses extensive knowledge of the hospital’s history, though not so much the actual practices and policies of the hospital; clearly considering himself something of a town historian. Most of his colleagues feel he would’ve been a better fit for academia, but he insists that the work he needs to ‘get done’ within Karakura's hospital is ‘groundbreaking’ and ‘too important’ ... all without elaboration. That tendency, coupled with the fact that he spends way too much time lingering around the hospital’s morgue, blood bank, and blood transfusion tools… it leaves him somewhat socially distant from many of his colleagues who find him unsettling and creepy; he may not be doing anything wrong, but for many, he doesn’t pass the ‘vibe check’. The vibes are off.
Though this has not stopped him from receiving a high intake of visitors. Many citizens evidently view him as something of a spiritual guru as well as a doctor, often expressly asking when he will be around. He openly invites citizens to schedule acupuncture appointments with him if they’re experiencing back pain. Moxibustion, herbal medicine, and therapy-related massages also, evidently, form part of his repertoire.
Off-duty, he practices some of his traditional medicine techniques when the law actually allows him to. These are usually non-intensive and therapy-related treatments. Otherwise, he can be found usually within the Jinsei Zen Garden or Ochiba Forest, engaging in meditation or giving spiritual advice.
How does your character act around the hospital?
When Seluvis isn’t poking around the morgue or hospital laboratory settings, he can be seen often engaging in extremely extensive, almost ‘salesman-like’ interactions with members of the public, boasting about the wonders of traditional medicine, and usually tailoring his discussions on the maladies relevant from patient-to-patient. He will still give the ‘orthodox’ and proper medical advice or prescriptions, but also, often completely unsolicited, will propose other methods of treatment; usually methods only HE is trained in.
Others describe him as a tad egotistical, viewing his traditional medicine repertoire as setting him aside as a ‘special’ or ‘superior’ doctor. His extremely privileged upbringing and life within the Nakazumi Family… has also resulted in him becoming a tad out of touch and snobby. Though he denies such allegations of snobbery or elitism and sees himself as extremely egalitarian in his approach to medicine!
He is well aware of how his unique skillset often marks him out for ridicule or suspicion, and so adopts an extremely professional demeanour towards his colleagues, markedly different from the down-to-earth, conversational and friendly approach he takes towards his patients.
Does your character function better on their own or with others?
It really depends on who the ‘others’ are, and in what context. He is not incapable of working alongside others in a clinical hospital setting. His approach with colleagues is professional and work-oriented, whereas his approach with patients is casual and friendly. Seluvis' charisma, though useful in the field of medicine, has raised eyebrows among some leaders in the hospital who have dug into his past. An investigation into his background whilst studying at Karakura High reveals a young man obsessed with certain folklore tales within Karakura and ‘reviving the unfiltered traditions of the Lotus Sutra and Zen sects that saw prominence within the Kamakura period’. He engaged in, and continues to engage in, numerous spiritual practices and activities, often in groups. On the face of it, there doesn't seem to be much cause for alarm...
Regardless, some have found him to be egotistical, impossible to work with, and ‘completely nauseating’. Fortunately for him, patients and his superiors have begged to differ, and no allegations of professional misconduct have ever been made against him.
‘Doctors bring peace, in life, and, I maintain, in death. That’s how medicine should be… It does make me smile to see family members reunited with the bodies of their loved ones, truly, it’s wonderful! I’d never say this to their face, but quite frankly, it’s only natural to want all mortuaries, at the end of the day, to make your loved ones look better dead than they did alive!’
Dr. Seluvis Nakazumi
