To the people of Karakura, and to Mayor Katsuhito Saiky-Akihito,
On the morning of October 15, the Mayor made an address in front of Town Hall and asked Karakura to forgive any wrongs committed under his government. The Valiant Karakurist Party takes that apology in good faith, and we thank him. We also take seriously the rest of what he said that morning: that the safety of Karakurans is his responsibility, and that he will not allow Karakura to fall. On that we are in full agreement. Nobody on this island benefits from a government that cannot protect its people.
It is because we share that goal that we write. The Mayor closed his remarks by saying that “we are one” and that “we are Karakura.” The VKP is made up of Karakuran residents, whether foreign-born or native, and we believe that sentence has room in it for us. Unity, as we understand it, means that people who disagree keep working at the same table. That is the role of an opposition loyal to the people, and it is the role we ask to be allowed to play. By that we mean this: we will support the government wherever it acts to keep Karakurans safe, and we will ask questions wherever it acts without explaining itself.
We are aware the Mayor spoke of political instability “sewn by threads that wish to cause chaos in Karakura.” We want to be clear that the VKP seeks stability as much as he does, and pursues change only through the Constitution and through cooperation with the Government.
I speak now as Deputy Chairman of the Valiant Karakurist Party, Ujie Beaumont Segoe. In conversation, the Mayor told me that a party which disagrees with itself will never reach Town Hall. It is a fair warning. We will take it seriously, and we will make sure the VKP is steady within itself before we ask Karakura to rely on us. A recent disagreement over the direction of the VKP was settled by its Chairman and its Deputy Chairman speaking plainly to one another, and both of us have signed this letter. We would rather argue openly and settle our differences than pretend we never have any.
When our Chairman, Elgin Oktay, asked whether cooperation was possible on matters where we hold similar opinions, we understood the Mayor to say that he would hear us out but did not seek our assistance. We respect that the decisions rest with him. We would only ask that being heard include a way of being answered, and so we ask that a standing channel be opened between Town Hall and the VKP, so that our concerns can reach the Mayor before they reach the public. We remain ready to offer our assistance.
The Mayor has told me he does not need an apology, and I thank him for saying so. I offer one regardless, on my own behalf and that of Chairman Elgin Oktay: to the members of the VKP, and to the Mayor, for any sharpness in our statements, actions, and mild instability while preaching about stability. If it has ever seemed that our aim was to make this about ourselves and not about Karakura, that was never our intention. We work toward progress, not perfection.
We thank the Mayor for his time, and we remain ready to serve this island in cooperation with its government.
Per aspera ad astra.
Signed,
Ujie Beaumont Segoe, Deputy Chairman
Elgin Oktay, Chairman
The Valiant Karakurist Party
