Backstory

Before Micah was born, his mother's grandparents, who were Japanese diplomats, moved to the United States post World War 2 in order to help restore the public view of the Japanese in the United States. They decided to stay long-term and had their son Ayato who married Riku, whom he met in high school. They settled in the suburban areas of San Diego so that they could find jobs. The father's family lived in San Diego from the start, so it was only a matter of time before Ryan Payne and Yui Tanaka met. They ran into each other at a mutual friend's wedding and not long after they married and had Micah's older son Akira. Wanting to stay near family, they also decided to stay in San Diego.

Micah was born 4 years after his brother. Having a brother that much older than him, he was prone to get picked on because of the babysitting role that was forced onto Akira. Micah was also naturally mischievous so he would even instigate issues between him and Akira for entertainment. While this was an issue when he was really young, the pair grew used to each other, and by the time he got into grade school, they were both very close to one another. Growing up Micah was very fond of his grandparents. Having deaf grandparents on his father's side, he learned American Sign Language in order to communicate with them. When he was in 1st grade he was already fluent in ASL and perhaps even more fluent than he was in English! He would frequently go with them to Deaf events and interact with the Deaf community.

During most of Elementary School, Micah was a very good kid in both academics and socially. He was always scoring at the top of his class and participated in many extracurricular activities. He was raised really well and only ever had minor issues compared to a normal childhood uprising. However, the summer before 4th grade, he woke to his father sobbing in the living room with his mother comforting him. Since his father was somewhat of a softie and would cry to almost any sad story, he went back to his room because he believed it was nothing. However, a couple of minutes later, he hears a knock on his door and opens it to his mother who is visibly trembling. She asked him to sit on the floor in the living room along with his brother Akira. Now, Micah, genuinely afraid, could only sit and listen. His mother informs them of their grandparent's passing, having gotten struck by a drunk driver on their way home from shopping. This is the first time that Micah experienced death in his lifetime. To make the problem worse, they were two of the closest people to Micah. His parents were very supportive emotionally and did their best to bring light to the situation. But this trauma would hurt Micah for the next few years.

During Micah's 4th grade year, he went in with no motivation or passion to do anything. He began to miss assignments and would sit alone wherever he got the chance. This large change in his behavior caused him to be a target to those seeking to swell their ego. He began getting picked on again and so he fell into a depression. His status academically and socially would be diminished. During this time, many of his lifelong principles and ideals would form. He vowed to never touch alcohol, having experienced firsthand how it can ruin people's lives. Because of the bullying, he decided he wanted to be the complete opposite and try and help the community rather than harm it. He grew used to his situation and was even able to accept the death of his grandparents and move on. While he was making strides mentally, he still had no friends and would rather play games and do activities with his older brother.

It has been a couple of years and Micah's brother is in his final two years of high school. Micah's parents start suggesting to Akira that he decide what he wanted to do post-graduation. Akira, being closer to the Japanese side of the family, decided that he would want to study abroad in Japan. Micah's parents thought that it was an amazing idea! Micah, being very close to his brother, was not as enthusiastic. Akira was still the only real friend Micah had and didn't want to let him go. Micah's parents took notice, and since they knew of Micah's social situation they decided that Micah should go to Japan to attend High School there while Akira was in college. A new start in a whole new country might be healthy for Micah and help him make new friends. Not only that, but he would still be close to his best friend. Micah was ecstatic to hear about this. However, he would need to learn Japanese if he were to excel in school there. For the next two years, until the move, Micah would spend hours every week learning Japanese. He was determined to succeed.

Two years later, Micah and Akira both became fluent in Japanese and made the move across the ocean. Micah had decided that he wanted to attend Karakura High School and while there was a college there as well, Akira decided to go somewhere else. This did cause some tension between the two but they were able to sort things out and decided that as long as they lived close enough to each other, they didn't need to be together. And so, Micah would start his new life at Karakura High...
