Nature: Why We Need More of it.

Nature: Why We Need More of it in Schools.

Everywhere we go, nature surrounds us in some way. Whether it be the trees towering over us as we walk up the steps into school or the bushes lining the hallways as we head to class, plants are always there with us. I think it’s safe to say that most people don’t notice their presence– it’s just decoration after all– but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t affect our daily lives in important ways.

When you think of plants, what comes to mind? For some, it may just be an image of a tree or flower; for others though, it’s a feeling. Sometimes it’s a much-needed symbol of freshness against loud, dirty hallways; other times it’s a welcome break from the sterile environment of a school. Nature often provides a sense of serenity in students, even if it’s unnoticeable by the average person.

It also creates a stronger sense of community within the students of the school as it encourages students to stop and talk with their peers during breaks. The alternative being to instead just block out the outside world while scrolling OnRain on their phones. Ask yourself: would you rather relax and have fun with your friends in the closed-in hallways of the school or outside while surrounded by nature?

It’s safe to say that the plants present within Karakura high are an overall positive addition to the school– but what if we had more of it?

Instead of creating a divide between the inside of a school and the outdoors, why not bring some of the outdoors inside? Imagine walking through the long corridors of the high school and being met with green wherever you went.

People like seeing interesting things, and when stuck inside the boring environment of a school all day, something as simple as plants could greatly improve their mood. Not only that, but it may also encourage students to explore the grounds of the school instead of just planting themselves in one place all day.

It wouldn’t have to be a large change– a few more potted plants in classrooms, or more rose bushes meeting you as you take a step outside. Just that would be enough to greatly improve the morale of students, even if it’s just because they have more backdrops for picture-taking.

The actual addition of the plants could even be made a fun event for the students. Perhaps people could grow their own plant of choice and everyone could vote on one to plant around the school, or students could even volunteer to help plant them.

Nature is beautiful, and natural beauty is often a thing that’s lacking in our lives when we’re spending most of our time stuck inside, so I think providing more of it would be a great improvement in our lives.
