NEWS REPORT | QUALITY POLL RESULTS

Level 111

Under permission of the Journalist Club of Karakura Schools, I (Renge Yamabuki) were able to share a poll regarding the quality of school and its events, faculty, and students. Below is a summarization of the results per this poll.

The first question asked toward students, alumni, and teachers was “What do you like about Karakura’s classes in specific?” An overwhelming amount of the responses simply said that nothing was engaging about them but instead praising late teacher Riyako Terusuno for her invigorating efforts as an educator.

The second question was regarding the quality of students and faculty of the school. Many said they had a great distaste toward the students but only a small amount of distaste toward the faculty. This is likely because of the actions that faculty members have taken to prevent bullying and other chaotic behaviors on campus. Karakura Community College especially is notorious for their behavior in-class, something that professors around Japan are ridiculing. One interesting answer to this question about both students and faculty suggested that they were all hedonistic. To be hedonistic is to possess little care for others and to only be infatuated with themselves. The other answers to this question supported the claim of this one anonymous person who described themselves to be an alumni of the school.

The third question asked what students disliked about their student life at Karakura. Of course, this was a question that teachers and other faculty members could not answer (unless they were an alumni), but the answers were shockingly varying considering the results of other questions. One said that they disliked never being able to go on trips while the other said that their time at school was considered boring without being on a sports team. One said that they have been prejudiced for their sexuality and appearance while the other said that events at the school were no longer interesting.

This begs a question, “Why are there so many varying results?” To put simply, everyone has a different experience at Karakura High. From my own experience, sometimes your family name or wealth is considered in terms of popularity. To be on a sports team, though, is to be the center of attention and a role model for other students -- there is a reason why some people think that sports teams are less boring than being an average student. Members of sports teams are constantly asked to be on their best behavior in an effort to not stain the school name.

The fourth question asked students what their biggest challenges were as students. The most prevalent answer was that bullying was still a constant issue at the school despite faculty trying to address it. This relates back to what one alumni said about the students being “hedonistic,” and how they have little character outside of their surface. Consistently, students will put down other students because of their appearance or family status without care for who the person actually is. This results in a domino effect where the victim of bullying then sees the bully as a person without any values or depth. Every student has great disdain for one another because of their actions. It pleads for a change.

This pleading directly related to the next question, asking students what they would do to better their life as a student. Many responded with great hatred for the school and saying that there was no change to be done. Others suggested events that involve students in noncompetitive ways to unite them and to revamp the council of misbehavior.

The final question of the poll asked students what they would tell underclassmen of the school. All responses were of the same volume, telling the student to simply transfer schools or drop out.

What could be done to change these horribly negative opinions of the school? The next article which I will be writing will cover exactly this, practically serving as an open letter to students and faculty. Change will come.
