APPEARANCE
Nikola (or Nik) stands at 5'7", she has amber colored eyes, short fluffy brown hair, and has a slightly muscular build. She has a heavy Germany accent and has a slightly raspy and low pitch voice, but not low enough to be considered masculine. She has tattoos of different colored snakes and lizards covering both of her arms, extending down to the tops of her hands. She also has a scar across her right eye, that eye also being removed, and she is missing a piece of the helix of her right ear. Another notable thing about her is the lip piercing she has on her bottom lip, this usually being a silver color. She also often wears a necklace that holds a lynx claw.
PERSONALITY
Nikola is usually an easy going person, often one to try and lighten the mood with a bad joke and loves sharing facts about her field of study. But when needed, she can be very serious and stubborn, refusing to just stand by when bad things happen to innocent people. Despite this, she does everything she can to avoid things getting physical and prefers to try and settle problems verbally rather than physically. She also has a soft spot for animals, not hesitating to call someone out on any form of animal abuse and mistreatment. BACKSTORY
TW: Drug and alcohol addiction, abuse, death
Nikola ended growing up in a homeless shelter, her mother had a low paying job as it was all she could qualify for, but even with the money she got, the two often went hungry as her mother spent this money on drugs and alcohol.
Nikola was still able to go to school, but due to her filthy appearance, she was often bullied by other kids, she’d end up spending most of her time trying to catch bugs and frogs while the other kids played. This helped to spark her interest in animals, as in a way they became the only friends that she had. But sadly, her mother was never fond her daughters hobby, and would try to kill any bugs or frogs that Nikola brought back with her. Despite knowing she’d get a beating later, she’d always protect the little critters and would release them somewhere nearby to avoid her mothers wraith.
Even though the two of them were alone together, Nikola never got along with her mother, she was almost always drunk or high and very abusive, often beating Nikola in order to vent her anger, or as a cruel punishment for her daughters hobbies. Anytime Nikola wasn’t being yelled at or hit, she’d avoid her mother like the plague, even in her best moments she’d be terrified of her.
When Nikola came home from school one night, her mother was incredibly drunk and went on yelling and rambling about how Nikola was a mistake, and the reason they were living in a homeless shelter and not an actual home. Nikola tried to stay silent at first, but eventually broke down sobbing, this only caused her mother to get even angrier and she began to hit her daughter till eventually she went silent again. Laying on the cold floor, Nikola stared at the wall, tears still streaming down her face as she tried to let her thoughts take her elsewhere, wanting to be anywhere that wasn’t near her abusive mother.
Despite living in a shelter, full of other people, her mother was able to get away with this abuse since the shelter did value its occupants privacy, which is kind of them, but incredibly unfortunate for Nikola due to the abuse she had to face at the hands of her mother.
Nikola did try and tell the other occupants and workers at the shelter, but this proved to be pointless, as people either didn’t believe her, or didn’t care due to their own problems. Some even told Nikola she was over exaggerating, and that she needs to be more empathetic to the struggles that her mother had to face.
One fateful night when Nikola returned home from school, now being 7 years old. She’d be stopped by the shelters workers, being informed that her mother was gone, having passed away due to an overdose. Nikola was shocked, but not horribly saddened due to her mothers treatment of her, but despite this, she still shed a few tears. It was from here that the workers tried to get in contact with Nikolas biological father, but to no luck. He had managed to avoid being traceable to Nikola, so the only option was to send her to her mothers ex-husband.
Considering Nikola was, in a sense, the reason for the divorce, her mothers ex-husband wasn’t to terribly pleased to meet the child, but didn’t refuse to take her in. While Nikola was granted a much nicer home now and no more physical abuse, her adoptive father didn’t pay her much attention, often only speaking to her to get her to do chores or to scold her for doing something wrong, but thankfully, she was reunited with her older brother due to this. Following this adoption, Nikola was also transferred to a new school, since she now had a proper home and care, she was able to wear nicer clothes than she had been stuck with before, though this didn’t solve all her problems.
Out of habit, Nikola continued to play alone, staying separate from all the other children around, continuing her adventures of finding and playing with bugs and small animals she could find around. Occasionally, she’d take some of these home, at first she was hesitant to even bring them near her adoptive father, but he proved to be more accepting of her little friends, though did keep her from bringing them inside, so she’d release the little critters in her backyard.
As the years went by, Nikola slowly began to get her adoptive father to warm up to her, now speaking to her more and paying her more attention than he had before. This came as a shock to Nikola, as her mother never payed her any positive attention, but now her father did, despite him still having a cold and blunt demeanor, not being the most affectionate father to Nikola. While her relationship with her father was a bit strained, she had a rather good relationship with her older brother. Although the two would often tease each other and play fight, she felt much closer to him than she did to anyone else in her life.
When Nikola was 9 years old, her half brother revealed to her that she was going to be an aunt. At first, she found herself to be a bit annoyed by this, resenting her brothers daughter when she was born. Sadly, her brothers fiancé did end up passing away during childbirth, which caused Nikola to feel guilt for at first resenting the idea of having a niece and after some time of not only having to help care for their blind daughter, she found herself beginning to bond with her. The two formed a very close relationship, usually resulting in Nikola taking her around places, much to the displeasure of her older brother due to the dangerous situations Nikola would end up getting the two in.
On her 10th birthday, Nikolas father gifted her with a surprise. Her first bike, and her first toys to truly call her own. Though the bike wasn’t in the best of shape, and the toys she received weren’t the most expensive, she was thrilled, as this was the first kind gesture any adult had showed her. From here, she was taught to ride her bike, and made a habit of playing with her other gifts, but still preferred digging around for bugs and small animals. And much to the dismay of her family, ended up equipping her bike with a basket to take her niece with her when she went on adventures.
As two more years passed, Nikola received another surprise, but this time, it was something more positive for her father. Her father had began dating a new woman and one day brought her home to meet Nikola. At first, Nikola was a bit fearful of this new person, her last mother figure in her life being less than ideal. For a while after their first meet, Nikola was very shy and would often try to avoid her step mother, but after two years of dating when her father finally proposed, her step mother was hopeful to form a bond with the child.
When Nikola was out playing in the yard, searching around to see what new little animals she could find, her step mother came out to join her. Nikola was a bit startled by this, but her step mother just sat with her and smiled, asking about her interest in animals. Nikola was more than happy to open up and tell her all about what she knew of the creatures she had spent so much time with, also sharing the things she had learned in school. To Nikolas surprise, her step mother gifted her with some books detailing all sorts of facts about all different types of animals, all the way from the blue whale, to a little ant.
Reading these books with her step mother became a common occurrence, eventually expanding her interests into dinosaurs and other long extinct animals. Nikolas father and brother were both clearly happy at her finally bonding with her step mother, but of course her step mother was much more excited by this.
When it finally became time for her fathers wedding, Nikola happily attended, despite not really knowing a thing about how weddings operating or what marriage truly was, she was just happy to be there, and enjoy the food.
Shortly after the wedding, the newly weds decided to take their honeymoon, and made the choice to leave Nikola behind. And since her older brother was out of town and busy with his fiancé and daughter, another guardian was needed to watch her during this time. This did upset the girl, but she was promised to stay somewhere just as fun! This helped to boost Nikolas mood, but little did she know this fun would be nothing like a cruise or relaxing trip at a resort.
Just before her parents left, Nikola was dropped off at her fathers brothers home, which just so happened to be a small rickety cabin out in the woods. Even with Nikolas love for nature, she wasn’t too excited for having to spend the next few weeks here. Her uncle was very eccentric to say the least, the inside of his little cabin covered in pictures of all these different animals that lived in the area, particularly pictures of a possibly feral lynx which had been the perpetrator to many attacks in the area. It almost looked like her uncle was a conspiracy theorist with the way he had maps and pictures of this wild cat up, convinced it was the same animal and not just separate attacks.
Nikola ended up sleeping on a little sleeping bag in the floor during this time, listening to her uncles ramblings about this lynx he was tracking and all about the attacks that supposedly were caused by the animal. Of course, no one in the area believed that it was all the same lynx except for him, so he spent lots of time trying to convince Nikola to believe him. She eventually just gave in, pretending the man made complete sense despite not truly believing this, but she was hoping it would shorten his ramblings. But this wasn’t the case, he continued to ramble, and even proposed teaching her to set traps and hunt for the animal.
Reluctantly, Nikola agreed and began to help her uncle set traps, along with allowing him to teach her to use a rifle, which Nikola didn’t particularly fancy, considering she loved animals and didn’t want to be the one to shoot one. This “training” eventually devolved into the two going on walks in the forest, her uncle convinced they may come across it. But to Nikola, this was just a chance to enjoy the scenery and bird watch, trying to keep her mind off of how heavy all the gear her uncle had her carry was.
One night during one of their “patrols” the two ended up being out later into the night than they had planned two, this put the two of them on edge, more so her uncle since he one hundred percent believed the lynx could be lurking anywhere. Nikola was on edge too, but didn’t believe this infamous lynx would come out to attack them. As they were making their way back to the cabin, the two took a break from walking and sat on a log just below a small ledge, drinking some water and eating snakes before they got moving again. As per usual when they took breaks, Nikolas uncle would ramble about his hunting adventures and tell hyperbolic stories of the lynx which supposedly had been the one behind past attacked. Nikola just listened, nodding along as he rambled on and on, sort of just zoning out as she looked up in the trees, trying to spot any bats that may be around.
As the two began to pack up to get moving again, they heard some rustling nearby. Her uncle quickly moved to point a gun in its direction, muttering about how he finally found the lynx. Nikola on the other hand backed away from the direction of the noise, fearful for what could be lurking in the dark near them. After some silence, a lynx then suddenly came leaping out of the bushes nearby them, headed straight for Nikola. Despite having his rifle at the ready and firing a shot, he still missed which resulted in Nikola getting pounced on. She fell to the ground, desperately trying to get the lynx off, but didn’t manage to succeed until after it already scratched her eye, and took a chunk out of her ear.
Once the lynx was off of Nikola, her uncle fired a shot at the animal, wounding it, but not yet killing it, the lynx hissed and tried to strike at her uncle, only to receive a hunting knife to the back of its neck as Nikola jumped up and lunged forth, breathing heavily as blood dripped down her face. Her uncle quickly rushed to pick up both Nikola and the lynx, running back to the cabin which still was a little ways away. Once he arrived, he tossed the lynx inside his house, despite having to save his niece, he still wanted to make sure he brought the animal back as a trophy. From here, he called for an ambulance before trying to stop Nikolas bleeding, having to wait since he lived in such a remote area to most cities and townships. Nikola found herself to be a bit shocked, not only from being attacked by a wild animal, but from her uncles newly found protective demeanor, doing all he could to keep Nikola comfortable and safe while they awaiting an ambulance.
Once the ambulance finally arrived, Nikola was taken to the hospital, which still was a good drive away. Her uncle following the ambulance in the old filthy truck he had, due to how he drove, it was clear he didn’t leave his remote little homestead very often. Once at the hospital, Nikola received stitches for the slash across her face and her ear was bandaged. The doctors revealed to her and her uncle that she had permanently lost sight in her right eye, and would be missing part of her right ear as well. Shockingly enough, this didn’t bother Nikola, once she heard the news, a grin spread on the 13 year old's face, she looked to her uncle, claiming her scars would be her “battle scars” and remind her of their little adventures. This helped Nikolas uncle more than she realized, he smiled brightly to her, having felt so much guilt about the injuries his niece received, it was relieving to hear from her that she wasn’t even bothered by them.
Of course, Nikolas parents did receive news of what happened, and ended up cutting their honeymoon a day short to come back to pick up Nikola while her brother cut his own family trip short and came back. Her parents, brother and niece were deeply concerned, although this was mostly seen from her mom. But Nikola just smiled and laughed it off, claiming that she could look like a bad ass now. Her uncle did end up getting blamed for her language, but the two didn’t mention a thing about how they had been hunting the lynx together.
Shortly after returning home, Nikola received word from her uncle that the lynx they killed was in fact the lynx behind the attacks. At first, Nikola didn’t really believe him, but he went on about all the pictures and minute details he had picked up on this animal. As a gift, and a way to say thank you, her uncle sent Nikola a necklace with one of the lynx’s claws attached, along with a photo of the lynx being turned into a bad taxidermy, clearly her uncle was an amateur.
From here on out, Nikola proudly wore her lynx claw necklace, and unapologetically refused to cover her scars for anyone despite the many looks people gave her, particularly her classmates who had now began to fear her after seeing her new scarred appearance. A few kids did build up the courage to speak to her and ask about her scars and necklace, and she told a hyperbolic tale of how she slayed a lynx with her uncle, clearly, her storytelling had taken some inspiration from the way her uncle told stories.
As the years went by, Nikola found herself becoming more confident, no longer as shy as she was when she was younger, she’d now openly talk to many people and would share whatever odd facts that she currently had on her mind, most of these revolving around animals or dinosaurs.
When Nikola turned 16, her father began teaching her to drive. She managed to get the hang of this very quickly, falling in love with driving, no matter the weather or where she was even going. In just a few short weeks, she felt more than ready to get her license. And when the time came for the test, she passed on the first try.
Despite being very proud of his daughter, Nikolas father didn’t show this very well. For all the years he had been taking care of Nikola, he never truly showed just how much he cared for her. Even with this being the case, Nikola did still care deeply for him, but on the outside she didn’t seem as close to him as she did to her mother, who was much more emotionally available to Nikola, often being the shoulder she could cry on and the one to comfort her growing up.
As the next two years went by, Nikola ended up graduating school at the age of 18 with an outstanding GPA and quickly got accepted into the college of her dreams. Shortly after her graduation, her mother planned to have a graduation party for her, of course the party was zoology themed, much to the excitement of Nikola. Since by this point Nikola did gain a few friends, she was able to have them, her uncle and some of her parents other family over. Despite this being a very exciting time, Nikolas father just seemed to remain calm, of course this was normal for him, but Nikola did find herself mildly disappointed he didn’t seem more happy for her success.
As Nikola prepared for her move to college, she began to notice something with her father. Even though he had always been a bit distant, he was now even less talkative than ever and spent much more time in his room than he had before. When asking her mother about this, she just told Nikola that he was tired from work. Of course, Nikola believed her, not having a reason not to. But little did she know just how much more was going on.
When it came time for Nikola to move into her college dorm, shortly before getting ready, her father collapsed, worried and scared for his safety, she desperately called her mother over and called for help. They were able to take her father to a hospital, where Nikola finally learned what her parents had been keeping from her. Her father was suffering from a terminal illness, at this stage of the sickness, he had very limited time left.
Nikola was filled with mixed emotions, on one hand, she was horrified to learn her father was going to pass away, but also found herself angry at her parents for having kept this information from her for so long. Her mother explained to her that neither of them wanted to bring Nikola down since she had seemed to be so happy, and were hoping that her father could keep his strength just a bit longer to make it to Nikolas college graduation.
Nikola did manage to settle down, mainly due to the fact that she wanted to be there for her father as he went through this. And after about two months of him battling his sickness, she was alone with him in his hospital room. He asked his daughter to come closer to him, from here, he apologized for being distant all his life, and thanked her for being the amazing daughter she was, she assured her that despite what she may think, he always loved and cared for her deeply, he just didn’t know how to truly express it to her. Nikola was able to embrace him one last time, as he had her promise to continue to chase her dreams, and make him proud. Shortly after this embrace, he sadly passed away.
Nikola took a few weeks off from school while her mother took a few weeks off of work to mourn and have the funeral for Nikolas father. Luckily, the two were able to cope well in the company of one another, having always been so close, they were able lend each other support. But despite the loving environment she was in, Nikola still found herself feeling torn down, she so desperately wanted to talk to her father just one last time. She felt as though she never got to know the true him, and blamed herself for this. Her mother tried her best to reassure her, but Nikolas mind continued to wander off, thinking about all the things she could have done differently.
Once back in college, Nikola continued studying to become a teacher, her excitement for her field kept her moving forward, along with the promise that she had made to her father on his deathbed. Despite being her adoptive father, she felt as though they had truly been related. But she knew otherwise, knowing that she quite possibly still had another father out there. Even with this knowledge though, she had no desire to meet this man. Afterall, he had also abandoned her and her mother when she was born, she had no desire to meet him and only felt anger towards the father she’d never know.
As Nikola continued her studies, she’d also often visit her mother and would take short trips with her, knowing that her mother must feel very lonely with the loss of her father. These trips and visits only helped to strengthen the bond they had, and proved beneficial to the both of them.
Once it became time to graduate from college, her mother, brother, and uncle both watched her walk across the stage to grab her diploma, a huge smile on her face and tears in her eyes, knowing that her father would be proud of what she had been able to accomplish. After the ceremony, she was able to spend time with her uncle, who she didn’t often get to see since he only ever visited for short periods of time. He ended up going on a rant about how he still had that horrible attempted taxidermy of the lynx that had given Nikola her scars, this just caused Nikola to laugh, she was just happy with the excitement that her uncle still had after all these years.
After graduating, Nikola began picking up teaching jobs, but had one particular hope to pick up a job in Karakura Japan, the pay drawing her attention, but also the beautiful scenery. Once she made up her mind that this was the place she wanted to work at, she began studying the Japanese language via online courses, also learning JSL as well, figuring it wouldn’t hurt to know the language if she as going to be teaching.
Once Nikola turned 24, she was hit with yet another surprise. Unfortunately, she had learned from her step mother that her older brother had been in a horrible car accident, causing him to be immobilized and thus unable to care for his daughter. Nikola took in her niece without a second thought, much to the joy of her older brother. And while he could no longer care for his daughter, luckily both Nikola and her niece were still able to visit him often.
After nearly five years, Nikola now being 27, she finally had enough money, and experience with Japanese to move to Karakura. At the airport before her departure, she said good bye to her mother, and uncle. A part of her felt terrible for leaving her mother, knowing full well that the poor woman lived by herself, but had promised to keep in touch with both her, and her uncle. So, after plenty of hugs and well wishes, she boarded her plane and flew off to begin her new job, and new life!
