DETENTION IS USELESS - Here’s why

02 January 2025 / Written by Neon Hayasaka

Hello fellows, today we're going to take a look at the detention procedures at our beloved school. Oh yes, most likely the mere mention of this silly punishment probably gives you goosebumps. And I won’t surprise you at all, because as an outstanding, beautiful, beloved journalist, I have already received 5 invitations to this wonderful room, although I will admit with a sinister smile that I have accepted only a few of these invitations. But okay, what's so bad about punishing bad children? (For example, such wearing puppy onesies) To understand this, we should first read the definition and understand the purpose of such a procedure.

DEFINITION OF DETENTION
„Detention is a requirement for a student to remain in school or attend school outside normal school hours to reconsider their actions. Most often by making an "apology" in which the student explains why their actions were wrong.”

As you can see, the main purpose of detention is to rethink one's behavior. And in most cases, this works well, as long as the person has the so-called common sense and can learn from his mistakes. But what if such a person has done nothing wrong? Is he supposed to apologize for being born? Because he certainly can not ask for another assignment, most faculty will not go to you in such a situation. Should he write the truth? That won't work either, because according to the faculty, there is no such thing as inaccurately given detention. What's left for you to do? Make it up. Most likely the only way to get out of detention. Unless you are on good terms with the student council. Then there is a chance that they will listen to you and give you an assignment that is more to your liking. I did that as a councilor, and I'm proud of myself. The council should support students, but that's a topic for another report. So, what should be changed in the detention procedure?

WHAT SHOULD BE CHANGED?
First of all, I think it's impossible to do too much in this regard. Detention has always been supposed to be a harsh punishment for the worst students, but something has gone wrong and now anyone can end up there if they do something wrong. My idea is strict new guidelines for issuing detention. Let's be honest, how can someone who walked in the onesie of a dog be put next to someone who got into a fight? Doesn't that seem unfair? It's like the Police arresting you for 3 months for some petty thing and for the same period a person who killed someone. This should not be the case, which is why the change is needed.

Another issue is the actual tasks... Although I mentioned that the task with apologies and explanations is not always on point, yes it is still the best way to encourage over-reflection. Doing math assignments, writing 5-10 pages of a story... I remember the answers to math assignments as I made answer sheets for them, so I can do tasks in less than 2 minutes. Also, someone who thinks before going into the detention room can generate a story for themselves on their phone using artificial intelligence, and then transfer that to paper. Because, as you know, in detention the Wifi signal is blocked. And of course, an apology can also be written by AI - However, in such a case it is easier to see. Unless you skillfully use prompts...

In closing, I want to mention the conditions of punishment. By being in detention, you are chained to a chair. Do you have problems with your eyesight and can't read the board with the rules? You are not allowed to stand even to read them! It's not allowed! And while I understand the rule of not eating and drinking, each person should be able to drink water during. Hydration is very important, so a bottle of water should not so much as be allowed, so even recommended. In extreme cases, like during class, eating a sandwich should also be allowed as long as you do it quickly and don't make a mess. The brain needs energy to work, so keeping people hungry will prolong your time as a detention supervisor, and his alone. Finally, there remains the rule against electronic devices, which is fine. I have no objection to it. Ah, well, and how could I forget the rule about sitting in the front? A strange rule, although I also have no objections to it.

Thank you for reading my report. Take care, And do not end up in detention!
