The Cycle

Each month or so, you may notice a handful of new faces within the herd of faculty. You may also notice the lack of familiar faces as old ones set off to a new mission. The main question lies here: Why do faculty retire?

Pushing and Pulling

The main motivators of life changes are push-pull factors. Pushing someone out, or pulling someone in. Even a bit of both. If we take these reasons into account, we may be able to dig deeper into the real reasons a given member of faculty leaves the job.

Push Factors

  • Student Behaviors: Student behaviors affect many faculty members daily. Whether it’s stalking, fighting, writing fan fictions, or ignoring them. Faculty will get fed up, say “I don’t get paid enough for this,” and quit.

  • Tough Jobs: In the world of faculty, there are several groups of people. Each one has different roles and responsibilities. However, sometimes it gets too much, which pushes faculty away from the job. An example of this is chefs. Chefs must cook over one hundred meals for breakfast and lunch, along with serving students. Then they have to deal with line skippers, line repeaters, and special requests. Either way, chefs may be overwhelmed and end up quitting. This explains the lack of meals we’ve been getting lately.

  • Unfit Work Environment: Sometimes, people find themselves to be uncomfortable with drama, rules, and social environment. People’s personalities may clash with what’s expected with working at a school. Faculty could expect to keep their head low and work, like cleaning the school, but in reality it’s more involved with interactions. This may make introverts uncomfortable and want to find a different job.

Pull Factors

  • Bigger, Better Jobs: Bigger jobs mean more money, and new opportunities. It can also mean status changes. For example, the News Station may have open positions, and a faculty member may want to be a cool reporter instead of a student counselor.

  • Relocating: Sometimes, people and their families find opportunities outside of Karakura. Whether it’s Mainland Japan, their home countries, or even something completely different. It’s hard to work at a place you don’t live.

  • Challenges: Perhaps faculty can get bored sitting at their stations. Receptionists, for example, they just answer questions at the front desk. They don’t do much. They’ll get bored and want to find a job more challenging and brain stimulating.

  • Retirement: Everyone gets old eventually, and old age comes with perks. The main one being retirement! Older folks are able to retire from working to live the classic old person life. Playing golf, bingo, and doing the jig. They can also focus on family and friends.

An Interview with Former Receptionist Sako Akori

Flay: “When and for how long did you work as a School Receptionist?”

Mr. Akori: “In Karakura, or in general? If we’re talking about just Karakura then well, I’m not sure. Time in this town goes by strangely, though what I do know is it was longer than I would’ve preferred.”

Flay: “What are your main reasons you quit the job? In Karakura.”

Mr. Akori: “How many reasons do you need? The students in this town are a different breed- they follow you home, have zero respect for boundaries, try to break into your house and not to mention that one specific book that they had going around..”

Flay: “What do you plan to do after retirement?”

Mr. Akori: “I’m already retired so.. Marry my fiancé and raise my son.”

Afterthoughts

Sako Akori is just a pebble on a rocky shore. His experiences vary with other people, but some may find his experiences relatable. Two rocks can be rounded, but they’re never the exact same. There may also be different reasons as to why someone may leave the faculty life, but one could say this: You can’t last forever.
