Main Character Syndrome

03 February 2025 / By Flay Ming-Akori

What is a Main Character?

When you watch a movie, TV show, or read a book, you often have the protagonist, also known as the main character. They are the center of attention and often carry some serious plot armor. Plot armor is when they defy all odds to survive a situation because they’re needed for the plot to carry on. For example, Deku from My Hero Academia. Without giving away too much, Deku had his future told by someone whose power revolves around it. And against all odds, plus a harsh fight, he survives. He’s the main character and must survive for the plot. Who else is dumb enough to do the things he does? He is needed, so he stays. He’s immortal.

Karakura High’s Main Characters

Karl

I did a double take when I saw he DYED his hair to SONIC. Cobalt blue. A few spikes and he’s good to go. He also has lots of friends, which suggests he is actually the main character of Karakura.

Neon

People who claim they themselves are the main character are insane. Enough said.

Sena

Sena is an example of a main character bully. She purposely mispronounces names with her back up gang that are attached to her to the point where they become OBSESSED. I haven’t seen her in awhile, but I bet she still mispronounces people’s core identities (on purpose) daily.

The entirety of the Occult Club

Have you heard of all the dangerous situations they get themselves in? Classroom curses, hoarding all sorts of witches cauldrons, haunted dolls, statues, scarecrows, and more in their room? They constantly take trips to places like the shrine or murder locations just to say “hello” to ghosts and spirits. The only reason they aren’t dead is because of their relevance to Karakura’s plot. They’re immortal and are confirmed main characters.

Touji

Touji is a prime example of a TEACHER’S PET. He gets into trouble and sucks up to the teachers who punish him, acting all sweet so they get on his side. He’s not fooling me, but this is an example of a two sided act. This is a main character to a high tier, because he’s well known by teachers as a respectful student, even though in the background, he’s an antagonist. An opp, as they say.

Lia Longname-Californiasume

Lia is an example of fashion, or lack thereof contributing to their superior nature. They want to be different, and cold apparently, so they rebel by not wearing pants but instead wearing a giant T-shirt under their neon colored jacket. They attract attention and radio topics to talk about, even though deep down they know it’s a bit weird.

Lia also carries a large name tag with them, which gives them attention when it comes to attendance being called. It’s not just Lia though, it’s other people out there; you know who you are. However, it’s not your fault, it’s your wacky parents wanting you to be different.

Mr. Riggs

He just is. He gets into a lot of crazy situations, like falling through the ceiling in the middle of class and not being yelled at by the teacher who he had fallen on top of. This confirms the universe is calling out to him, giving him the main character crown. He may get beaten up and battered, but it’s all part of the plot.

Gaku, Principal Brown, Eun-Kyung, and Many More

It’s not their fault they got superior genes. Them being tall is all they need to become the main characters. They do struggle getting through doors, but it’s all about the plot relevance. Main characters must struggle.

Marcello Akori

He plays football as the team captain. Of course he’d be the athletic main character who trains days and nights at a time just to realise they could be STRONGER. Marc is a prime example of someone who wins over all the girls because of how much of a show off he is during football tournaments.

The Good

Confidence is always nice to have, especially when it comes to school. Usually people lack self confidence and dislike themselves, but apparently for some, they gain so much confidence they genuinely believe they are the most important piece of the plot. It’s nice to have a variety of people with rainbow hair, heights, fashion styles, or are just straight up cool. Popularity is valid, but high egos are more questionable.

The Bad

It’s annoying, and quite frankly, NOT REAL. We don’t live in a universe that revolves around you. People’s egos are so high sometimes they don’t even realize, and they push away those who try to tell them.

Get Help

If you believe you’re a main character and wasn’t mentioned here, get help. You’re not the main character, the most you can do is become a popular kid in the school. Even so, you’ll be forgotten about after graduation. Afterall, we live on a secluded island, and what you do will never matter in the end.

I used to actively refer to any students fighting ghosts as having main character syndrome when I was in the shrine. This is gold, and the drawings PEAK (seriously love this)
